I'm basing this MOCK hoping that we trade out with Dallas and end up with 2 first rounders. 1A 24 (Dallas' pick from Cleveland): Vernon Gholston DE/OLB Ohio State - He'll probably go much higher than this, but this is only a mock. 1B 30 (Dallas' pick): I'd like to see our FO trade this pick to another team looking to get back into the 2008 first round for their 1st round pick in next year's draft and another 3rd for this season. 2A: Jeff Otah OT Pittsburgh - This guy's been flying up the draft boards. Otah should fill the void at Right Tackle 2B (from Baltimore for Jonathan Vilma): Eric Young OG Tennessee - I know, another young o-lineman, but if we don't sign anyone through free agency, at least we'll have a solid o-line for years. Young is much too solid to pass up. In the 3rd round, I think the Jets should go after some offensive weapons. Kellen Clemens needs some more targets. 3A: DJ Hall WR Alabama - Tall, athletic receiver that can stretch the field and open things up for Clemens. We need a slot receiver and Hall could end up being a steal in the third round. 3B (aquired by trading out of the 30th pick): Jacob Tamme TE Kentucky - A tight end isn't necessarily a need, but Tamme is a big time threat in the passing game. He has 4.6 speed and he's 6-5. He'd be a great target over the middle and in the redzone. For the later rounds, I am just going for BPA at the positions we need. 4: Dre Moore DE/DT/NT Maryland - Moore is a big lineman that could play numerous positions on our d-line. If he doesn't work out at Nose tackle, he could always shift to end and help our defense improve against the run. 5: Andre Fluellen DT/DE Florida State - Fluellen is an undersized defensive tackle that could probably make the transition to 3-4 defensive end. 6A: Ezra Butler LB Nevada - Butler can most likely play all of the linebacker spots in the 3-4, but he is best suited to play outside. He knows how to get into the backfield and disrupt plays. This guy's a big time sleeper linebacker out of the WAC with good size and 4.5 speed. 6B (from Minnesota for Chad Pennington): Dwight Lowery CB/S San Jose State - If this guy falls into the 6th round, I will be very surprised, but if he does we must take him. He's most likely going to win WAC Defensive Player of the Year. Lowery has the ability to be a shutdown corner or a ball-hawking free safety. 7: Mike Dragosavich P North Dakota State - I would actually like to see us draft or sign another punter. Dragosavich has averaged 44 yards a punt throughout his college career. Ben Graham has been awful in most games and I think it's time for a change. Punting is a big part of a team success, especially a defense's success. Let me know your thoughts.
not a good mock, imo. first of all, which pick do we trade to Dallas? y would you want to trade down, only to stock picks for next year? Good teams can do things like that, we need help now! right now Gholston won?t fall that far, maybe groves could be our pick there we don?t need a TE, period!!! i?d like to get a true NT in the mid rounds instead of a DE, i hope for Raji can?t say much bout your late rounders, cuz i don?t know the players
I would be so happy if our draft turned out like this, but as you said Gholston will probably be gone by then, and with Otah's stock rising he may not fall out of the first, but I agree if he does we have to take him. Love the Eric young, DJ hall and Ezra Butler picks. Dre Moore probably won't make it to the 4th round. I agree but Raji probably won't come out this year, the best we can get will probably be Frank Morton or Jason Shirley.
Yeah, it's just so early right now, that I just "drafted" players that I would like to see in Jets' unis. There's always a solid offensive lineman that falls into the beginning of the 2nd round...hopefully that's Otah. Dre Moore probably won't make it out of the 3rd, but he was the only guy that I saw ranked in the 8-12 range of DTs in this season's draft that was worth anything. This year's defensive tackle class isn't very good...at all. I passed on Shirley, because I'm a Fresno alum and the guy's had chance after chance to straighten up and he hasn't -- he'll probably go in the 6th or 7th...maybe even undrafted. Morton out of Tulane could be a solid pick at nose. I didn't pick Raji, because he hasn't declared and he's most likely going to stay in school.
Pick we trade to Dallas: A pick ranging from 4-7 Gholston: I said in my mock, that he will most likely go a lot higher than the pick, but I'm not sold on Groves. He might be a good situational pass rusher, but since he's made the move to OLB for Auburn, he's been lost. He wants to play 3-4 OLB in the NFL, but he might be just another 4-3 end. Reason for stock piling future picks: We aren't going to get ALL the help we need in THIS draft. For the positions we need, there isn't much talent in this year's draft. Next year, your boy Raji will be in the draft and we will have EXTRA picks to move around and get better players. You don't build a team through ONE draft. We are going to have holes again next season too. It's always good to stockpile picks, even if we aren't that good right now. True NT: When are you people going to realize that there isn't a "true NT" in this year's draft? Tight End: We have Chris Baker, who is a solid player. Kowalewski is turning out to be a pretty decent player. Jacob Tamme has the ability to line up at receiver. It never hurts to have more than one tight end that can catch. Tamme would only be another weapon for Clemens. We wouldn't have to throw the awful back corner fade anymore in the redzone with two pass catching tight ends.
That's an awful mock, both in that it's bad for the Jets and it's very unlikely. First, why the hell would the Jets trade that far down? Do you know anything about draft value? There's a chart ranking picks that coaches and owners base their trades off of to make sure they are gaining adequate value, and let me tell you, it is highly unlikely that a team with a top 5 pick will trade out and move down so far, only to get two late picks. I really doubt they'll be trading out of the top 15. Also, like you said, Gholston won't be there, so why even put that? Otah's likely a first rounder, but regardless that's not a bad pick, if he can play RT. No way we go OL with our two second rounders...I cannot understand at all why they'd do that... This draft could use work..
If we have a pick around 6-8, and we pick up 2 firsts and a 3rd that is a good value trade. This year's draft class is terrible and we have holes at both guard and right tackle. That's why I had us select 2 great o-linemen in the 2nd round. There isn't anyone else worth taking. No one knows where Gholston is going to be drafted yet, so what's wrong with selecting him there?
I didn't see we got a third in it also, so my bad on that. I still don't think that's close to equal value though. It's really not logical at all to trade OUT of the top 15 if you're already in it. Assuming we pick 6th lets just say, I'd much prefer (and it's much more likely IMO) that we trade down with the 12th team and get their first rounder this year and 2nd and 4th maybe, or first this year and next year. It's just not very smart to trade out of the top 15, strong draft class or not... Also, Gholston has virtually solidified himself as a top 20 pick after his game against Jake Long and Michigan (completely owning their OL and Long specifically, the nations best tackle) his workout numbers are only going to boost his stock, I'd say come draft day he's a top 15 pick...I doubt he's there by 22 (although I don't know what other teams need necessarily, so I guess you can't exactly rule it out.) I'd think at that point, Groves is a much more realistic option... As for the two OL's I really really really really doubt we'd do that. Two years away from spending two first rounders on OL, we're not spending two second rounders on OL. I say if between the two, it'd be Otah at Tackle, but not both. You gotta remember their are some big names at Guard in this year's FA crop, led by Stacy Andrews and Alan Faneca, both whom are rumored to be leaving...
I only traded with Dallas because they were the only team RIGHT NOW with two first rounders and I didn't feel like making some big scenario with another team to get an equal trade -- I know it isn't necessarily a good trade according to the draft value chart, but it's what I had to work with. I WANT to sign a guard in free agency, but I also didn't want t do a mock off-season, so I filled our o-line needs through the draft. I'm not a fan of drafting so many o-linemen either, but they were the BPA because this draft is so weak.
Your draft is falacious from the get-go. Dallas will never trade with us and we shouldnt because we would never get the value. This is a statement I posted in another thread which I feel you need to see, Electric. You're a good guy and I don't want to piss you off or trash your draft but please read... There is no way we get any value from Dallas unless we FLEECE them of all their picks. Hypothetically, if we had the number 3 overall pick that would be worth 2200 points. Dallas also has Cleveland's first round pick, but with Cleveland doing as well as they are, their pick won't be nearly as high as Dallas would like. As of right now Cleveland has the 19th pick worth 875 points and Dallas has the 31st pick worth 600 points. This leaves Dallas with 1475 points to our 2200 points and a difference of 525 points. All told, Dallas would need to give up both first rounds, their second round and their third round in order to equal anything close to our first round pick. So, Dallas would need to give up their entire first day and their 3rd round pick just to move up to #3. So, please, would everyone please stop talking about us trading down with Dallas when it wouldn't be in Dallas' favor whatsoever.
Yeah, the value on that deal is way, way off. I get that Dallas is the only team with 2 firsts at the moment, but dropping less than 16-20 spots and picking up a 2nd rounder instead would definitely be more attractive. As for the draft itself, finding a lot of "steals" kind of makes it a little bit slanted when it comes to these things.
I understand that the value is poor, I was just more interested in getting more players in the first with a mock draft, because it's a mock draft, not a real one. The only reason I made the mock trade with Dallas is because they are the only team with two first RIGHT NOW. You never know which team is going to end up with 2 first because of a franchise-tagged guy getting traded. I just didn't want to create a big scenario with another team trading up and us getting their picks.
Check out our pick in the 6th round...the rest of the draft is meaningless, and pretty bad, but I called Dwight Lowery in November.
I picked Vernon Gholston #1, so I was actually 2 for 6. Note: This was before the Faneca and Woody signings too.
I wish we did get Lowery that far back though in the draft Im hoping we are right and we didnt reach for him to early
So I'm just looking back at random old drafts (because I'm bored as shit) so see years later not just who guess right re: picks, but who also guessed right re: talent of picks. Thought this was interesting as fuck. Nice call on Lowery.
