I listened on Friday to his interview with Michael Kay, and was surprise that about what he said - until after the game, when I realize he was dead on... ...Kay asked Martin if he thought the Jets were headed in the right direction under Mangini and this coaching staff. He responded a resounding YES - saying that the fans and media don't see what he sees as a former player, who not only played in the NFL but knows most of these players and has gotten to know there coaches. Martin said that the coaching staff is making excellent progress with building the team from the bottom up. 2006 was a positive suprise, but not an indicator, and 2007 is a dissapointment- but you can see growth towards the goal. Martin pointed out the except for the Patriot game, the Jets were in and had a legitimate chance to win EVERY other game this season. Then he said he didn't think they should be 8-1 but just a little luck would have made is 4-5 at worst - and 4-5 and growing heading into the Steeler game would have been fine for progress with the tougher schedule and the nuiances of learning in the 2nd year of a new regime. Based on what Martin said, and what happened Sunday, I am more optimistic about our future. The young core guys look better and better. The coaches look to be learning from their mistakes and experiences - witness the changes during the bye week. The new starting QB is looking like the guy who can lead us into the future. Thanks for one more first down rush Curtis with your comments on the radio!
I love C Mart to death, but he's the ultimate company man who may eventually be looking for a serious position within the organization... he's not going to come out agaisnt the current FO...
I agree with you Green Guy...I was down on the team for all the losses, but there is a strong group of young draft picks fueling this team right now, which gives me a lot of confidence in the regime. I'm actually looking forward to seeing who we get in next year's draft (instead of dreading it).
I really wouldn't expect Martin to be anything but Pollyannish regarding this team. Even as a player, he never badmouthed anything about any regime the Owner bought in no matter the record and I don't expect that to change. Hell, even Kendall won't go public and he's not even on the team anymore!! This FO/CS is as much on a learning curve as this team is a work in progress. Martin preaching patience. Imagine that.... I guess you can call it a "Professional Curtesey".
Now cmon GG what would U expect CM to say? You actually suprised me with your post as I thought you had a pretty decent knowledge of FB
He's actually looking at purchasing a team... not looking for a job. And that team would not be the NY Jets. If Curtis didn't believe in what the current regime is doing he would have not brought the subject up. He felt it was important enough to talk about it so I have to agree that he at least believes what he says.
Does not mean what he said is correct though now is it? Being a good RB does not make U a good evulator of a total teams talents now does it?
Of course he could be wrong, but you would really want to dig for that wouldn't you? I'm willing to give a guy that actually plays in the league for over a decade the benefit of the doubt that he knows more than you and I do about how to establish an NFL team. It doesn't hurt that nearly half his career was spent on Parcells/Belichick teams.
regardless of Martin's respect for the organization, there's no denying the FACT that we have been - if not had the lead - in just about every game this year. terrible teams don't even make it close. as bad as we are, we're not that far off from contending.
What Curtis Martin SHOULD have said."Kellen should have been named the starting QB after the Ravens game. Did Mangini really think Chad was taking this team to the playoffs. The defense is getting ripped to shreds he needs to change it. DeRob is getting killed by two blockers you need to get him one on one where his athletic ability takes over. Other than starting the wrong QB and the wrong defense Mangini is doing a great job."
tell me is there another team in the league with as many young stars with this much potential. D'Brick, Mangold, Clemens, Harris, Revis. This regime has done an excellent job of finding talent, and that is a HUGE positve. 5-5 on first and second round picks is huge. Cheap in free agency yes but apparently that is the formula when REBUILDING, despite what happened last year it was well known we had very lackluster talent. Sounds like great coaching to me. A few lucky bounces of the ball this year its a very different seaon. Martin is right on. We have a lot of promise for the future.
