You are absolutely correct. Rich Kotite was allowed to stay after finishing 1-15. Leon Hess was rewarded for his loyalty to Kotite by getting another 1-15 season. It was only after back to back 1-15 seasons that we wised up and gave Parcells anything he wanted to become our coach. Instead of waiting for another 1-15 season, I would cut our losses now and overpay the best coach I could find to fix our team. Unless a quality coach gets the axe, I think Jason Garrett is the best man available.
Not that I think we should get rid of Mangini just yet, but IMO Bill Cower is best available. Just my opinion though.
I don't like the idea of firing our HC, at least not this season. I think Mangini is better than this, and next year we will be better. Besides I think that if after next season Bill Cowher may be interested in becoming a HC again. I don't think he will be ready after this year, if we are swapping HC's I want our next guy to be Cowher.
Garrett is top 5?!! He just started, how can he possibly be anywhere near that? That's what they were saying about Schotty Jr. last year and look at you guys criticizing him now. Y'all need to have some patience with this staff...they have a Plan.
If people want a new coach every two years, we will never become a good team for any length of time. How people deal with adversity shows the type of person they are. Coaches, players, even fans. Wanting to drop a coach at the first sign of trouble will not make us successful in the long run.
There's a difference between "sign of trouble" and "unholy catastrophe." We're in the latter situation if the Jets lose out at this point. Really we're in that situation if they can only beat Miami the rest of the season. There are no coaches in NFL history who have had as bad a season as the 2-14 the second scenario suggests who have ever amounted to anything unless it was the first record they produced upon taking over the team. Even then there are perilously few. Chuck Noll took a 2-11-1 team and went 1-13 with it before he turned them around. The Steelers had gone 2-12 3 years before his inaugural season also and were widely seen as one of the worst teams in pro football at the point that Noll took them over. John McKay took an expansion team with virtually no NFL talent on it to 0-14 and 2-12 before finally getting to 10-6 in his 4th season. The Bucs then collapsed again and he was replaced 3 seasons later. There just aren't many examples of teams that have recovered under the same coach after he presided over the kind of debacle that 3-13 or less represents. Given the Jets very poor management decisions over the life of the franchise I'm not going to bet that staying with Mangini in that situation would be anything more than throwing good money after bad.
Actually Kotite got year 2 after 3-13. Once you have seen that kind of record out of a coach there's no need to keep him unless he brings something of obvious value to the table. The only thing Mangini brings is youth and that and $2.50 will get you a large coffee at Starbucks.
Well, Mangini isn't going anywhere after this year, so if you're not willing to have any patience, go root for another team until he's gone because you'll just be miserable until then. Then again, I've never seen you not complaining about something so maybe you enjoy being miserable.
After suffering through mant of the coaches we have had, another year of Mangini won't make me change teams but he will learn tha the NFL stands for Not For Long if he doesn't step it up.
The fact that Tannenbaum hired Mangini(Best buddys since their Clevland Brown days) without looking at other candidates is questionable. I'm willing to wait for another year with Mangini but Tannenbaum running our 2008 draft (the most important since Parcells took over) does not inspire me with a lot of confidence.
Revis and Harris were good picks. The problem is they believed their own press clippings from 2006 and drafted as if we were a SB contender. The year before they got Mangold, D'brick and Leon Washington. We are rebuilding and it is going to take some time for improvement. You will not see improvement from this team until late 2008-2009 the earliest. They are not going to sign any big name free agents until all the other pieces are in place as well.
Yep. I'd go along with that. But a better '08 campaign buys him one more year(s). I just don't understand this instant gratification culture. Its amazing that we still have christmas only once a year still.
How do you know he didn't look at other candidates? What other candidates were available at the time? I don't recall, but I do remember thinking I'd prefer Mangini out of the bunch being mentioned. I'd be willing to be a lot of people on here felt the same way.
I thought Mangini was a very interesting hire. The chance to get a young coach who had participated, even at a low level, in the Patriot's successes of the last decade and let him grow in the job was very appealing. Unfortunately what he's shown us this year is that he's just not ready for the challenges of competing in the NFL. Bill Belichik had been a great defensive coordinator on two NY Giants Super Bowl winners at the time he was handed the Cleveland job. He didn't have enough at that point to keep the job. What exactly qualified Mangini to be handed the Jets last season? His buddy was a noob GM. That's a lousy qualifier.
I doubt any of us truly know how qualified he was or wasn't when he was hired. I do remember a lot of the media praising the hire when it happened. That's not a clear indicator that he was qualified, but people in the know seemed to believe he was very qualified. He was in the Pats organization for years learning from the best in the business. You can look at this season and say he wasn't ready to be a head coach, but how do you explain last season? He's young and inexperienced as a head coach, I'll give him one bad season and see what he learns from it. Hopefully he can make adjustments and correct things for next season. edit: Don't try and point at strength of schedule either because prior to this weeks games the Jets actual strength of schedule was actually slightly more difficult (percentage wise) than their actual SOS last season.
The older I get – the fewer patients I seem to have for shit like this season. Not only am I for firing everyone involved but I would be game for some good old fashion torture. Like maybe shackle ManBadIdea to a chair by his wrists and ankles and surround him with TV’s playing a continuous loop of this seasons games 24-7 for a month straight.
