I was watching Jets Extra Point on Tuesday, and they broke down a lot of the plays on offense. Adrian Clarke was awful - he was basically a turnstile (great run blocker, awful pass blocker). A lot of the pressure Chad was getting was coming from the left side because of Clarke (which resulting in a lot of hurried throws, and Chad scrambling). I haven't analyzed Clarke's performance in other games, but I'm guessing it was probably as bad. If you think about the changes to the offensive, Clarke replacing Kendall was pretty much the only change (with the addition of TJ and the loss of Houston). So even if Kendall sucked, he still was a better pass blocker than Clarke. So I think Chad's abysmal performance can be chalked up both him not playing well (mental errors and such), and not getting the same protection from his line that he was getting last year. Maybe this year you can blame arm strength since he needs enough time to plant his feet and step into the throw.
I said it before and I'll say it now.. If an depleting LG who was becomming a locker room cancer leaving made or broke our season.. we were in alot of trouble. Looks like I was right!
I agree, kendall shares some blame but you cannot let a player dictate the situation and the Jets did that. There's no good reason why kendall isn't here right now, he's gone b/c after 1 good year Mangini thought he was belichick. What did we get? a 4th rd pick? over the long haul it MIGHT be better to have that pick but the offseason long distractions that headed into the season did hurt this team along w/ the drastic drop off in talent from Kendall to Clark. This is not THe reason we stuink but it's up there on the list. I had no problem moving on from pete but the drama surrounding it hurt us all offseason and into the season. It could have and should have been handled better. How about the late pressure in the Buf game that forced the game ending INT? how about the sack against Cincy that knocked basically ended that game? The line has been terrible and maybe a good game out of Jones*he had no holes) against bal would have eased Clemens in against the Ravens instead of watching him stink for 3 qtrs. You also fail to remember his leadership and experience on the OL, there's little doubt we'd be better w/ Pete. how much I don't know but we have had a chance to win each and every week outside of week 1 and we have lost each game. We have lost each game in the 4th qtr since week 2, it's not ceazy to think 1 player could have made a difference in some of those games. We would still stink overall b/c our defense is a joke(and the real reason we are 1-7) but we'd be better.
Everyone won with the Kendall trade, he has played well for us and you get a 4th round pick in 2 years. Although i am quite baffled as to why the Jets wouldn't just give him a $1 million raise. It seems so small for such a quality player.
the kendall trade hurt us by being 1-7, with no running game or protection says we are 1-7, the key to everything in football, when it comes to offense is the offensive line. if we had kendall we would be atleast 4-4
i tell you why. when your a QB the first things you see when you look forward while your dropping back is everything in front of you, you also can see your left guard getting pushed around with your peripherals... which in turn makes you want to decide quicker than normal to pass the ball, meaning you get nervous, anxious, and make decisions faster than you want to. with that extra half or full second you can make an accurate pass without having those emotions hurt your ability, emotions caused by having a below average left guard. it also helps the running game tremendously, with being able to run in bigger or just more holes in the left side. which also helps the passing game. we also need a better tackle than clement.
no its not, we have the same team as last year pretty much, the diffrence is not having good left guard, thats about it. why do you think the packers are doing well besides the fact they are playing in the NFC? and favre can be favre? his offensive line, how can a first time starter at RB run for 104 yards last week? offensive line, how can favre throw to 2 unheard of recievers the offensive line. does that sum it up?
You need to go back and watch that play again. I still have it and I still see Justin McCareins wide open with a well placed pass on his hands and I still see it popping straight up in the air when he could not catch it. That was in no way a forced pass, it was just a lousy attempt to catch it by a second rate receiver with questionable hands. The touchdown to Chris Baker on the drive before was a perfectly thrown touch pass with enough velocity on it that only he could catch it and despite a safety coming free on Clemens left side unblocked. I agree that the left side of the line has been poor in pass protection this year due mainly to Clarke being a hole, but there was no effective pressure on Clemens in the 4th quarter in Baltimore that he did not handle with excellent reads and reactions.
Look at the last drive against Baltimore. Most plays the Ravens only rushed 3. They lined up like they were blitzing, but they only rushed 3 or 4.
Edit: No we do not read further. LOL go ahead compare Chad Pennington of the last 5 games to Brett Favre go ahead I dare you, I double dare you (movie reference). This team had among the worst QB performance's in the last 5 games that I can remember from a starting Jets QB. You could put him behind the Great Wall of China and he would still suck. He can not throw the ball down field. Yeah right tell me Schott would call for 15 consecutive dump off passes per game............. please tell me that. If Chad was so good and the line so bad why would you need 10 in the box? Just rush 5-6 and get the same accomplished. Chad sucked period end of discussion. If he had Anthony Munoz and John Hannah on the left side he would still suck. He can not throw down field any longer. I am not a Chad hater either. He was one of the main reasons we had a good season last year. Fact of the matter is he is done as even a mediocre NFL QB IMO.
Wow. You sound like me? Lol.. It's Clemens time so you don't have to ever argue with Captain Checkdown's supporters again! No more 20-25 120 yard passing performances to turn the stomach ever again!
Clarke has been horrible. he looks lost on several plays every game. Both mangold and brick have said that playing with kendall was a huge bonus for their development. They miss that. Instead of having kendall help them, they had to be concerned with breaking in a new and untalented LG, who is about to be benched. Although the Jets screwed up by not keeping him this year, the also let the whole thing blow up in TC, and it was a very disruptive situation. His outward discontent with the CS was witnessed every day by the entire team, and may have helped set the table for the subsequent grumbling by the players, and occasional rumor of mangini having lost part of the team at times. The whole thing, plus losing him as a starter, definitely hurt, more in immeasurable ways.
I think the loss of Kendall may have cost Chad his starting job. Chad played well last year with pretty much the same offense (don't forget, we even beat New England), with no running game (8 men in the box in a lot of those games too), and coming off of shoulder surgery. Look no further than the first game of the season last year. I think he was the leagues leading passer for that game. His throws were spot on, and had good velocity. This year, Chad's not getting nearly the protection he got last year, especially from Clarke. Lack of protection from the o-line could explain a lot of what we're seeing. Chad needs to drop deep and step in to the throw in order to throw the long ball (most guys can't throw the ball through the crossbars from midfield on their knees). Not going happen if he's not getting proper protection. I think the dumpoffs and rushed throws are also symptoms of a lack of protection. I think it even got to the point where he was paranoid enough about Clarke's protection breaking down that he even anticipates it, even if it is holding up (call it the "Carr effect"). Regardless, I think Penny's still got a lot of football left in him, and hopefully he goes somewhere with a good enough line so he can show people that he's still got a bit left in the tank. And even though the vast majority of the people on this board will be glad to see him go, I'm sure the vast majority of his teammates will be very sad to see him go. </Pennington apologist> With all that said, I am quietly excited about Clemmons' potential...
Yes, and, save for a few mental errors by a QB making his first start, and a few dropped passes, we moved the ball fine.... And that was when the OL was really in shambles... They've come together much better of late
The Kendall trade hurt us because the FO didn't sort out the contract which made an already unhappy player become even more disgruntled. We were a better team with a HAPPY PK in. The whole disastrous affair was definatley a disraction , The Skins are happy with him and we get a 4th rounder , lets hope we get a goody.
Clarke looks like a screw up by the FO but as long as Mangini was committed to Pennington hard to see how it really made any difference other than maybe being 2 and 6 or 3 and 5. We have a young inexperienced OL playing against defenses that have to cover about 6 yards beyond the LOS and they don't even have to account for 10 yards toward the sidelines in that space. I think that's a lot to ask of a very young line. I think once Clemens has a few games under his belt and DC start to defend the entire football field, we may have a very different looking OL? If I was a DC going against the Jets, there really is very little to fear by going after the QB or the running backs with everything on every play. If you have CB's who can tackle there is very little about the Jets O with Pennington that would keep me up at night.
I think you guys won short term and we'll win long term but it has hurt us for this season. he was hit as he threw it, he didn't have time to plant and throw so he couldn't get anything on it.
Are you kidding me? The ball was thrown as hard as any throw Clemens made that game. McCareins just could not haul it down.
