Oct. 31, 2007 Home > The Way We Hear It ~ ~ ~ NY Jets Oct. 29, 2007 Jones running into problems in New York It?s been an awfully frustrating season for Jets RB Thomas Jones. On top of playing for a 1-7 team, Jones has found the toting the ball far more difficult in the Big Apple than he did in the Windy City. He?s eclipsed 67 yards rushing in just three games and has yet to find the endzone. We hear that Jones? struggles have been twofold. Insiders tell us that his biggest problem is that he?s a one-trick pony. He?s a one-cut-and-run running back, and once defenses adjust to his maneuver, he?s rendered very inefficient. Also, the O-line?s run blocking continues to lag considerably behind its pass protection. Averaging just 307 pounds across the front, the starting five is one of the smallest lines in the league and lacks the bulk to drive defenders off the line. > http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/The+Way+We+Hear+It/default.htm
Regardless of size the line was much better during Martin's tenure. This was back when Fabini could still play, and McKenzie was on the Jets. We fixed the guard situation by bringing in Kendall before he started to fall off and had Mawae who was a probowl center. Moore was really the only weakness, whereas now we have three holes and a weak left tackle we're married to.
keep in mind that jones is 8th in the league in yards with 557 and is on pace to break 1000, even with our lines run blocking and all the other offensive problems. no touchdowns, but their not really coming from anywhere else on this team either.
I think Barry Sanders and Walter Payton would find running behind this line difficult. The amount of times I've seen TJ run into the back of a lineman is ridiculous , are the Olinemen blocking the right way or has TJ not read the playbook? I know what I think!
I seriously doubt it with Sanders, the lines in Detroit wasn't very good at all, and having Scott Mitchell as a QB, ack.
I personally think we don't give the guy the ball enough. Last game he was averaging over 5 yards a carry and we barely gave him the ball, instead we'd call for a 5 yard out route or hook.
What ??? Jones is doing fine the jets dont use him when they should. him not scoring a rushing TD is the coaching staffs fault but then again when do we get into the red zone and score ? biggest point- our line is tiny and weak!
on nfl.com the stats say he has 147 carries on the year.. thats 5th overall in the nfl.... clearly he is getting "enough" carries, i think the bigger problem might be some of the situations he is being used in. thomas jones has the ability to potentially be our biggest offensive weapon. alot of changes need to happen before we can see how much of that potential he can fill, but all we're going to see this year is how opening up the offense affects what he is able to do and what the playcalling allows him to do. personally i love jones.. you ever see how hyped he gets sometimes when he breaks a 10-15 yard run?? i love that in a player.. i really hope i get to see him break out sometime this season.
Yeah, but Sanders was so good he would just reverse direction and run around the feeble line. Jones is no Barry Sanders..or Walter Payton for that matter.
Jones had a fairly serious injury in TC, who knows how healthy he was early? He seems to be getting a much bigger load lately and I suspect with Clemens he will get the ball more and be facing defenses that will have to defend a football field instead of a phone booth.
I don't think it is really fair to point the finger at TJ. Like Winston says, the injury, and the amoutn fo time he missed in training camp has to be a factor, but more important our O line has barely been able to do Jack Shit for the guy.
