Now, the question is who DOES get the job. I hope it's not Mattingly.

Joe Torre turned down the New York Yankees' offer to return as manager on Thursday.

The Yankees offered Torre a one-year deal with a base salary of $5 million and incentives that would have increased his salary to $8 million based on postseason performance. Under that offer, if Torre reached the World Series in 2008, an option for 2009 would have vested.

Obviously, he didn't think he could earn the money so I'm glad he turned it down. Time for some new blood.

Out of respect they offered him the contract and Joe declined to exit with dignity is what it seems to me.

LaRussa or Girardi in my opinion.

Bank on Mazzoni becoming the pitching coach.

well, the Yanks basically low balled him, probably knowing he would turn it down....so they leave themselves the out that they offered and he rejected....

Hopefully not LaRussa. The media in NY will eat him alive.

Lowballed him? The base salary was 1.5 million more then the second highest paid manager in baseball (Pinella at 3.5 mil). How is that lowballing him?

^^ Smart move by the Yankees, then. They'll save some dough and get a better manager. Practically by default.

But he was already in the middle of an outrageous contract and already is the highest paid player. He was unbelievable all reg season but again struggled when it counted although he was alot better this october. He doesn't deserve a raise.

Oh so the yanks never had great attendance and were never tops in merchandise sales before ARod? Spare me your little speech, attendance will be great w/ or w/o ARod, mercahndise sales will be great w/ or w/o ARod. he has not justified a raise.

He will get one though. Whether it's from the Yankees or somebody else. There is no doubt about that.

The money was not low-balling. 3 straight years of 1st round and out doesn't merit you a raise. I have no problem with the pay-cut, and even still $5mil a season is more than the next guy, Sweet Lou, who makes $3.5.

The low-ball was the one year offer...I was stunned that the Yankees would offer this to a man who has done so much. I'm a Torre hater, but this offer was bad, and a horrible move.

typical response proving you just dont get it......instead of the response you made you should have said...."thank you jonnyd for that life lesson. I will cherish it forever. Please let me pay you for your time and knowledge"....but instead you make your little eyeroll faces proving youre a lot more knowledgeable about internet functions used by 16 year old girls than you are about sports, business and the real world.....perhaps theres a reason 99% of this board thinks youre completely uninformed....now run along

There was a second year guaranteed at a flat 8 million if all he did was his job which was to get them to the WS (he didn't even have to win it).

Apparently Bowa is joining the Mariners as their third base coach.

    The exodus begins...
