http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...vinny_testaverde_intercepts_chad_penning.html subtle jab or no? Hmmm.....though I think Vinny was just being nice like he always is when discussing former team QBs.....
There's a certain amount of truth that he's saying, especially about pressing it. Chad's been making a lot of bad decisions throwing into coverage. But, with all due respect to Vinnie, it can be said that Penny's lack of arm-strength brings on a lot of the problems too. If he had the kind of arm Vinnie has, they wouldn't be stacking the box week after week and Schottenheimer could be inserting the occasional deep threat which would keep the DEFs honest. So, to some extent, some of these problems are brought about by Pennington's inabilities and the whole thing feeds on itself and becomes self-fulfilling. The short passes begat closer coverage, which necessitates even shorter passes, which brings on even closer coverage, and on and on into infinity. Pretty soon, even the 5-yard dump-off gets covered. It eventually affects every aspect of the offense from play-calling to the running attack. In that regard, Pennington is Pennington's own worst enemy.
So, another QB who says that Chad is one of the top QBs in the league and/or is having a good season (like McNabb last week). All this means is that either (a) they're too busy with their own teams to watch other games, or (b) they have no idea what they're talking about, or (c) they're very loyal to the QB fraternity. Answer (a) was probably true for McNabb, but since Vinny was sitting on his couch on Long Island until a couple of weeks ago, I'll have to go with (c) for him. Notice that I didn't include option (d), that they're right, since that is a ludicrous position to take.
yes he made a career out of it, but uh, if memory serves, Jets fans thought he threw a few to many INT's in his day. In fact I'm sure he is up there on the all time Interceptions list top ten if i remember, but then again maybe i'm wrong. Yup just checked the stats Vinny has 261 INTs while the now career leader in INT's Brett Farve has 278, so Vinny really isn't that far down the list.
Option c, along with option... I suppose e, that he's loyal to his friend... I don't think Chad would be half the QB he was in 2002 and 2004 without the guidance of Vinny.... Chad sat for a while, and Vinny was very cooperative in mentoring him and then stepping aside when the time came.... As opposed to Chad, who seems willing to fight to the death to keep his job, and, instead of having a headset on to help Kellen along when he got his start, had his helmet on and strapped up, looking to get his job back... I like Chad as a guy, but his fierce competitive nature, in my opinion, eliminates any chance that he will be a good and/or cooperative mentor for Kellen if/when he loses his job... Vinny, on the other hand, willingly stepped aside, threw on the baseball cap and the head set, and did anything he could to help Chad succeed...
Ha I know, but I just found it ironic... It isn't all about arm-strength, usually, but for Vinny, it really was/is....
No, you're not wrong. There were times, sitting in the stands, that I actually thought Vinnie must be on the take. I kid you not. Seriously, I'm not joking. There were times when his passes were like lasers alright, but it was like he was colorblind or something, because he'd throw it directly to the defender WHILE NO OTHER JET WAS EVEN NEAR HIM! RIGHT ON THE NUMBERS! So me and the guy who sits next to me figured out Vinnie was on the take! LMFAO.
The talent is here.....just need a QB that can get it to the receivers/TE/RB's...Look I've supported Chad and have thru out the years, but the horrible under thrown balls and the dumb passes he's been throwing this year is killing this team...we've been every game expect the NE game, teams know what to expect from him and how to play him....and his arm looks like its getting weaker and weaker as the games go on....also the playcalling is horrible...(i.e. Chad throwing 40 times in the Buffalo game), but thats a totally different issue. Bottom line if we are down and if the game is on Chad's arm, we'll lose period....We have play makers
I disagree on the 3 to 5 yard routes being covered. They're never covered until the Jets are in the redzone. That's how Chad has kept his completion percentages high over the years: nobody cares about the dumpoff routes, they're all covering the deeper stuff and stacking against the run and figuring they will break the string somewhere in the long slow march down the field.
I don't get the pressing part.... The team has had the ball in the 4th quarter and has marched down to get in position to tie it when Chad throws a pick.... WHY would you press then???? A Real good QB LIVES for that opportunity.. Don't press MAKE A FREAKING PLAY!!!!! Was it pressing when the ball he tried to throw out of bounds landed in a CB arms????
Totally disagree - I think Chad is one of the best in the NFL to learn from... Chad never had the arm to fall back on like Vinny and had to work twice as hard and study film and he leaves his heart on the field... I think Clemens is learning the NY media and the whole thing by watching Chad... Granted Vinny was a hard worker but, I just feel like Clemens is getting the best possible NFL lessons there are.
They didn't call him Intercepteverde for nothing. :breakdance: I was very leary of having Vinnie on the team, but I think it worked out for us both for a while. Until he got hurt obviously. I believe there is some truth to what he is saying about Pennington too. Granted Pennington has his weakness with the arm, but still I believe that his decision making is a result of trying to make something out of nothing. You cannot convince me that his brain just stopped working with no prior warning.
Vinny, have I told you lately that I love you? I have? Well, Vinny, have I told you lately that I am IN LOVE with you? What? You got a restraining order? 500 feet at all times? No, my love knows no bounds! I -- hey, Officer, there's no need for that -- HEY OFFICER! WHAT THE??? HELP!!! HELP ME!!! DON'T TAZE ME BRO!!!!
I'm not questioning Chad's head, at all, or his heart.... What I'm saying is, what I saw from Chad, especially during the Ravens game, was that he wants to be on the field, no matter what... I don't see him being a guy who will deliberately contribute to the success of the starting QB if he thinks he still has a chance at the job
I do not have links to back it up, but I pretty sure I have read about him helping Clemens along since he's been with the Jets. And I know for certain he has been a big help to Brian Leftwich who was behind him on the depth chart at Marshall. Of course he wants to play. But once he's been put on the bench and in that role he will do what he can to help the team. You don't expect a guy with that much heart not to care about playing, but you can always expect him to do the right thing.
I read the offseason stuff about him helping Clemens, but that was when his job was not in jeopardy... And he was a legend at Marshall, his job was not in trouble then either.... I know how competitive Chad is, and I think in this way it's going to hurt the team.... The contrasting images, I have in my head, of Vinny against KC in 2002, baseball hat on, headset on, talking to Chad every chance he had... and Chad, against Baltimore, by himself at on the sideline, helmet on, jumping up and down staying warm, only talking to Clemens on the bench.... Different mentalities....
He is friends with Chad. What is he going to say, "You know I have been watching some of their games and he just flat out sucks right now". Qb's are like Dr.'s and Lawyers and any other prefession they all stick up for one another. Very rarely will you see a classy player call out another classy player in the press. You may see a dirtbag like a TO or Joey Porter do it but never classy guys. It can and always does come back to bite you when you do that.
