I think Leon Washington should be the feature back and they should bring in Jones as the change of pace guy to hammer the defense. Here's why: The offensive line is not very strong running the ball, so Jones has trouble finding holes. Leon, on the other hand, is quick enough to turn nothing into something. And with this offensive line, that's what we need. There are two ways to wear down the defense with the run: One is to pound the ball with a larger back like Jones; the other is two wear them out chasing a smaller, more agile back, like Washington. Right now, I think Washington will do more for the running game.
Leon had 13 yards in 9 carries Sunday. His longest was for 10, so he ran 3 yards in his other 8 carries. it's the OL.
Just curious everyone saying it is the OL. How can 5 guys block 8-9 guys? Just curious, as if you can figure that out, there are plenty of jobs awaiting you as O-line coach or coordinator in the NFL.
It certainly isnt the RBs when the defense gets penetration as soon as the RB takes the handoff. And the OL did a crappy job trying to seal off the corners when the Jets tried to run wide (which looking back on it, wasnt a good idea, and should have been scrapped early on).
NO running back is going to work with this current offense. The combination of a crappy run blocking line, a qb who can't throw outside the numbers or down the field and a predictable offense based on formation leads to running game.
OL is not that bad........Just when a defense can line up 8 guys because Chad can't throw more then 5 yards, it's hard to run.
yeah, i dont see any running back running well behind this line..... also, since we're not fooling anyone, how bout scrapping the stupid no huddle thing and get back to a normal pace that our own team can handle. but of course, I would want to give up the one 12 men on the field call we get against a D each week...like that does us any good (dripping with sarcasm) when your team can't execute anything, ditch the bells and whistles and get back to the basics... sheesh....
If you are lining up with just the 5 lineman that means you have either 3 or 4 wideouts and no full back. you are not going to have 8-9 guys in the box with 5 lineman and no help. The wide receivers would be uncovered. They need to line up with a TE and a FB and pound the football between the tackles. At most the D will bring a safety down in the box, but that is not the problem, it is the tackles and ends making the plays on the running game, not a blitzing safety.
This stroke of brilliance is missed on 40% of this board. The answer lies behind the Center! No pass threat+no running game!
I agree it?s not only the OL at fault for the poor showing. CP has to take some of the blame. More importantly, a poor draft is another issue. Trading up is proving to be a bad decision. We have too many needs in both the OL and DL to have traded up. Revis and Harris are the cream on the cake. We needed to bake the cake. The draft should have produced more not less help. I?m starting to question Tangini?s competence. :jets:
Its not the safeties in the box causing the problems, it is the tackles, D ends, and linebackers. It was also the same with Clemens at Baltimore, oh I forgot, Baltimore is the greatest defense to ever play the game so that one doesn't count.
When he started completing passes down the field when the CS took the reigns off the Baltimore D backed up off the line. He picked their a**es apart in the 4th Qtr!
I dont know if this is neccessarily true... there are plenty of teams around the league today and in every season since the inception of the league that, if they have a competent, physical O-Line, use the run to set up the pass.....regardless of how many are in the box The Jets haven't been patient enough in letting the running game get rolling, and in turn haven't established any play action threat, which used to be Chad's bread and butter......and in my opinion this is somewhat due to the fact that this line is simply not physical enough to play smash mouth football yes the passing threat downfield isn't significant, but I think the stats would show they are too pass happy...and too predictable.
They were also playing with a 2 touch down lead and a 1 touchdown lead at last minutes of the game. How many rushing yards did we have, oh yea we didn't have time to run, I guess the must have known that also so they didn't worry about a few 5 yard gains.
Too simplistic. I agree with what Parcells said last night: This isnt Texaco, where you can replace one part and think that everything will all of a sudden be running smoothly.
But Leon goes down even easier than Jones, and if Thomas can;t run up the gut, there's no way Leon can, so what do we do, constantly run to the outside and be jsut as predictable as we are now?
I like Leon but you need to let him play his game. Leon has game breaking ability in the right situations however he is not an every down back. Trying to make him one will only disrupt his ability to help us the way he does. Chad needs to sit down for good. Clemens is the best chance at our future. If Clemens can play like he did against Baltimore we may actually have the evidence of how the players play when the quarterback can throw the ball a little deeper and to the correct team. Hopefully then we can start weeding out some of our trash on offense. Which needs to be done to get to a respectable level.
