Wow. How do I debate someone who just pretends I say all kinds of random shit? I could say that I had a hamburger for dinner and you'd respond: 'what are you saying? hamburgers are made of unicorns?' To address your point that in no way follows my own, speed is not the most important factor in sports. Speed is great, yes. It's importance, however, depends on the position and not on some blanket maxim. I wouldn't want to draft a guy who was 5-11, 190 and ran a 4.4 40 to play left tackle. I also doubt Bill Belichick is kicking himself and saying "If only Tedy Bruschi could drop 20 pounds and pick up an extra tenth of a second on his 40 time, he'd gain such an advantage." No. He'd rather have someone who can shed blocks (he can't simply run around them as an ILB, no matter how hard you may want him to), plug the gaps, and smack the RB. Now, if you want to suggest that Vilma's speed helps him to be a better cover LB, great. But it ain't gonna help him with those hogs on the line. And leverage is an issue of strength. I'd love to see you try to demonstrate how speed will help him get leverage against an OL. And filling the gap is Vilma's responsibility. Do you think there's an unlimited stream of LBs waiting to do his job if he can just get rid of that pesky guard?
No. I think Vilma, like most of our front seven, would benefit from a shift back to the 4-3. And sorry, but I've never been a ball boy. I played corner and spent a year coaching HS after college.
i guess your experience as a corner helped you play linebacker in college like myself. i also am a coach, at the college level not the slow ranks of high school.and i never said i wanted a 5-11 190 lb tackle you did. it seems you are putting words in my mouth, and cant understand things over your head!!! speed is more important at the combine than 20 pounds. you act as if vilma gets man handled at the point of attack and needs to go. have it your way jackass, i hope vilma does go then everyone who realizes the mistake can be on your side.do you think vilma is a weakling, he isnt a corner in high school you know
speed at every position in the nfl is a much desired attribute, not size over speed when the weight difference is of minimal value, comparing the two.
the attribute vilma most brings is speed to the position, which leads to the issue of weight, because height has very little effect in the size depatment. stop running by saying i cant stay on topic, when its you who looses the initial argument for getting rid of vilma in the first place
there is technique in sheading blocks, it isnt the wwf. strenght helps big time but the same blocker doesnt grab the same linebacker on consecutive plays very often. if so that tackle infront of him is totally ineffective. i guess with your outlook ( and im not putting words in your mouth) vilma does need to go before our current nt's
no but the ilb next to vilma better do his job. did i say the jet defense was nothing but a linebacking corp?
Vilma was a playmaker in the 4-3 because he had the right type of personell around him. The year after Jason Ferguson left for Dallas Vilma struggled because there was no one in taking on blockers in front of him. Put Vilma in the middle of the Patriots 3-4 and he's making plays all over the place. It's not the system it's just the lack of players around him.
A lot of truth in that and just another FA we couldn't keep. I'm sure we made some dumb ass statement like "he's getting older, we'll replace him through the draft". Just look at all these older people we let walk away that are still playing and still doing well. Someday people on this board will realize it has nothing to do with age and everything to do with money when it comes to how the Jets do business.
should have traded him after the bills debacle. i'm getting sick and tired of watching this softee. if you think about it, vilma is very much the pennington of our defense. he's got ALLLLL the intangibles in the world. he's a tremendous leader and the consumate professional... the only thing he cannot do is MAKE PLAYS or strike fear in his opponent. Trade him NOW. Seriously. I'm on the verge of just coming out and saying that he's a crappy player altogether. Overhyped, overrated, and SOFT.
When they played some 4-3 yesterday in the first half-- a REAL 4-3 with two DTs (pouha and D-Rob) and Ellis and Kenyon as DEs, they had some success. The DL got some better push that I saw when Pouha was in there. Not always, but enough to keep him in there more.
IF the FO thinks they should trade him after this season, i wonder if the Saints would be willing to give a R2 this year pick and next year's R1, or a R2 and R3 this year. they run a 4-3 and don't have any stand-out LB's. and since they're terrible, their picks will be high.
Exactly. If we switch back to the 4-3, we are a speed rusher away from having a very solid unit w/ alot of young playmakers. If anything, we'd STILL be able to occassionally throw in a 3-4 look to keep offense's honest. We just frankly have too many playmakers who fit a 4-3 to continue to ignore this.
i base any of the vilma trade talk on the notion that we are not switching back to the 4-3... because frankly, its not going to happen. i truly believe the FO will entertain the idea of trading vilma before considering the idea of a defensive philosophy change. the saints and bengals appear to be two sinking teams in dire need of help at the LB position. why not dangle vilma's name now? our season is over, vilma doesn't fit our scheme, and it seems that his skills are inexplicably eroding anyway. i'd take a 2nd rounder in exchange for vilma and play harris full time. he's ready to step in and be the man.
vilma's still young, barton will be first to go. and Vilma's cap numbers are still pretty low compared to barton. They will keep him until the end of this year and try to trade him. If they don't get a good deal they will play him next year and let him walk after 2008 (That is, unless his value has dropped so much being in the 3-4 that they might not have to pay him a huge contract) I think there will be some teams interested in a trade though.
[Rod Serling Voice] "Suspended in time and space for a moment, your introduction to Mister tbruner12, who lives in a very private world of darkness, a universe whose dimensions are the size, thickness, length of a swath of bandages that cover his brain. In a moment we'll go back into this room and also in a moment we'll look under those bandages, keeping in mind, of course, that we're not to be surprised by what we see, because this isn't just a message board, and this poster tbruner12 is not just a man. This happens to be the Horseshit Zone, and Mister tbruner12, with you, is about to enter it."
And, I noticed they largely ditched the 4-3 in the 2nd half..... Why? WHo knows? Too much success? Stupid... This entire season, everytime Robertson is off the nose, we have success, Vilma makes plays, and the D gets better pressure... Yet we stick with the 3-4, just like we're sticking with Chad...... Stubborn coaching staff is not good
Vilma Trade talk is retarded. Not going to happen. Just like they will not commit to a Quarter back change or defensive scheme change. Iv started to think you just have to leave this alone and allow for it to play out . Joe Gibbs keeps pushing his revamped version of the Washington Redskin as in the mold of his old style of coaching and its finally paying dividends for him. Maybe we just need to relax and let it unfold?
