Which is an indication as to how pathetic Red Sox fans are, as Mets fans still revel in Bill Buckner's blunder.

This is absolutely astonishing. I was looking at some old standings on coolstandings.com. On September 12, the Mets were 7 games up with a 99.2% chance of winning the division title, and a 99.7% chance of getting into the playoffs. The odds of this happening were 3 in 1000!

According to Baseball Prospectus this would be the 2nd biggest collapse in baseball history. The 95 Angels were 99.988% likely to make the playoffs at their peak and the odds of them missing the playoffs were 8,332 to 1.

    Interesting article here: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6764

So what makes this situation with the Mets the Biggest Collapse Ever?

Is it because the little amount of games that were left to play?

Either way, G.M.C all the way!

Well... I'm a Met fan, but, hey, if we weren't going to win the WS, we had to make history somehow....

GMC..... Ugh.... Oh, and FUG... You can figure that one out for yourselves

Well, in terms of the probability of not making the playoffs the wild card is a huge factor. Probably the collapse most similar to this one is the Phillies in 1964 where they had a 6.5 game lead with 15 games to play and lost it to the Cardinals.

Maybe because he realized his time as Mets manager is done, and it's his own fault.

I'm trying to figure out which collapse was greater statistically, the GYC or the GMC?

I think the Yankees chances went down greatly after games 4 and 5 not only because they lost, but because they taxed their bullpen. I don't think the Mets collapse was precipitated by much other than the players thinking they were too good for this.
