He went almost as high as Orlando Pace did (3 spots lower). When he starts playing even half as well he will get the credit he deserves.
It's all RELATIVE...... I think the original poster probably should have waited for the BUST remark and used "Concerned".... To me, Championship teams NAIL a couple of drafts... The Pats with their trading around and accumulating draft picks did a great job - The Chargers also hit some home runs... I realize that you can't always hit home runs and there's somewhat of a crapshoot to some of this - YET, it's not nearly the crapshoot drafts were even 10 years ago...... But, if you hit a few homeruns, you're that much closer to being a contender... You make a few top 5 picks that turn out ot be servicable player but, not stars - At that Salary you probably have a lot of making up to do at other positions. Some people enjoy following college ball, following the draft and then discussing players development..... Some don't Sounds like two different perspectives here: 1) Is or can DBrick ever be a top Monster LT in the NFL - HUGE DOUBT at this point. 2) Will Dbrick be a servicable LT in the league for years to come.... PROBABLY
Left Tackle is a skill position. The obvious choice for a skill player at 4 would have been Leinart or Cutler both of whom were obviously rated far below DBrick on most boards. To get the top rated player, Mangold and possibly a franchise QB with your top 3 picks is a pretty outstanding draft. To me Clemens is the key to this draft, if he turns out to be the gem he looks like with far more talent than Leinart and maybe as much skill as Cutler when you figure smarts and release this may go down as one of our greatest drafts ever and that includes the huge mistake we made in round 3.
Understood..... Though I think the "Choice" part is debatable - In that draft I think it would have been worth while to trade down and take a lot less than market value given that the draft was so loaded. I still think people who love following the draft reserve the right to point back to prognostications and talk about how this team could have been built differently. It's only 1 thread and people don't need to get all upset or exaggerate and pretend that those people can't also WATCH a game and analyze an Offensive line... Tks Kurt!!!!!
You're right, it is relative. Basically I don't think we will be Orlando Pace, but he will be a better-than-most- LT in the league. Maybe a Pro Bowl at some point if hs team does well. I think that he would be well suited for a team that passes alot of uses a west coast offense. Then again, when he is 25 or 26 and the metabolism slows down, he might start to pack on muscle and get up to 320 or so (not that this is required for success) and become a monster. Also, if the Jets add an above average LG at some point and a solid right tackle, he'll be way better because they are better as a unit. I would liek to see him do certain things a little better, but the guy is fine. If it was a concern, Eric would be answering questions about it, and at this point the issue has not been brooched.
Half as well? Well, I guess you can give him credit, then. Since you've established that you don't actually look at or know how to evaluate D'Brick's play, and since everyone seems to want to judge D'Brick based on overall line play, we'll play that game and look at the Rams. 2005 is generally judged to be Pace's best season. During that season, the Rams gave up 46 sacks. A line judged to be half as effective would give up 92. The Jets last season gave up 34 sacks. An improvement over that number! Even this season, they're on pace for 72 after playing tough, sack happy defenses in the first 2 games. That pace should slow. By either account, they're playing better than half as well as that Rams line, so I guess it's time to give D'Brick some credit.
I already have given him some credit. Just not as much as you have. We spent 2 #4s on people who shold probably be playing better then they are, that's all. By the way, how many of those sacks came from the left side and how many from the right in St Louis since you seem to have the numbers?
It's very simple, you don't draft a guy with a hell of a lot of question marks at #4 to protect our the QB. Mr. Robertson is another story because he is playing out of position in the 3-4 as well as Mr. Vilma.
We can all get to the real problem here in a hurry. When Ferguson and Mangold were drafted we were told by the Jets and the media that they would anchor our offensive line for the next 10 years so the expectations were set very high. The fact is we have probably one of the top 5 worst offensive lines in the entire NFL. We can't run block, we can't pass block and there isn't much else left for an offensive line to do. So, if it's because the FO didn't get the people they needed to augment those two then that's bad on them. They should have. Right now they all look like they suck and pick any reason you want.
There you go. That's the bottom line. We emphasize the individual when we talk about football, but offensive lines are only as effective as they are as entire units. The biggest problem D'Brick has had is that he's been trying to anchor the left side. Opposing coaches know that LG is a big problem, so they overload the left side of the line. D'Brick has been trying to help Clarke cover his man, which has led to more pressure on the QB. What's funny is that, if he just did his own job and ignored the fact that he's supposed to be on a cohesive unit, we'd have more sacks coming from the left side of the interior, but people on here would be talking about what a great pick D'Brick was. As far as the Rams go, I can't find numbers that break it down from side to side. Again, most ratings are based on the line as a unit. My guess is that with the inconsistency the Rams have faced at RT, that side of the line gets overloaded on the outside, leading to better numbers on the left. Unfortunately for Brick, the weakest link on this unit is next to him.
Maybe just maybe if you quote intelligent thought out posts by people that watch and understand line play their knowledge may rub off. Here is crossing my fingers, while throwing salt over my shoulder and knocking on wood all the while praying for the impossible:
Let me ask you if DBrick turns out to be a solid left tackle for say 6 to 10 years and Mangold is a solid center for 6 to 10 years and Clemens shows that the skills we saw last week translate into a top NFL QB, would you consider that a Home Run draft?
KC alone makes it a HR draft if he turns into a elite QB. Mangold then becomes a bonus HR & finally if D'B is servicable for many years that would would be a triple bonus making it a pretty darn good draft
Ive ignored most of these posts and I'll just say this: I was a huge fan of D'Brick coming to the Jets. We took him with the 4th overall pick. With a pick of that value and the contract we gave him, he needs to perform now. He's doing ok... just not great. Lets not all blame the left side of the line on him. He and Mangold are holding the left side together with duct tape and fishing wire since we really don't have a LG. I'm going to give him till half way through next season before I call for his head. Although the Jets may want to look at getting a new LT and move him to LG because of his size. And with respect to the draft that year, someone made mention of having the foresight to not take DBrick and to trade down for Hawk, Wimbley, Ngata or Lawson. There was no way we could have known. DBrick was being hailed as the greatest LT to come out of college in 20 years... sooo... blame the hype?
This is incredible! Let me clarify a few things please: -I never said I've given up on D'Brick. The post was started to express CONCERN over his progress at this stage. -I never BLAMED D'Brick or any one player for the inconsistent line play this year. This is just a post about the performance and improvement or lack of improvement of a guy we spent a very high draft pick on. -If you are one of those guys who does not enjoy looking ahead or looking back and evaluating draft picks or the draft - move on, that's your perogative, but you have no right to diss anyone who enjoys playing those games... -This was not a Robertson thread, but I think he has been a major dissapointment. -Offense is taken from the guys posting things like You are talking out your ass and so forth. That's not only uncalled for, but should be grounds for suspension from this board. In general, I again submit that D'Brick was not the best pick for the Jets at #4 in the 2006 draft. I posted BEFORE the draft that I was concerned about his physical issues and toughness... I really really wanted Ngata to replace Robertson - and a trade down made more sense. gg
