The line was low quality outside of Mangold, Ferguson and Kendall. Mangold is star caliber, Ferguson is potential and Kendall was meat and potatoes against weaker defenses. Now the line is low quality outside of Mangold and Ferguson. There was never any point at which this crew was going to be a good line but they definitely are a bit worse without Kendall.
Man Brad...Im really trying with dbrick..Im concerned. I really hope Im overreacting. He not only looked small tonite he played small also. I dont know. I think back to the athleticism he showed last year on a couple long runs where he was downfield and you say to yourself..this is a special lineman. Then I watched him certain games and tonite and you say to yourself if this guy just ends up being a decent player..it will set the development of this offensive line back at least..at least..one year. We put a lot of eggs in this basket and I just hope playing with a raw guard has provided just a minor setback in his development.
Straight up, this is why I wanted a Guard in first round this draft... now we feel the effects. I like Revis, but wow the oline is swiss cheese.
He was getting beat at will tonight. He may very well end up a bust because of where he was taken. At least I'm glad to see everybody is waking up to how bad this team is and what an anomaly last year's record was.
wishful thinking at best! you don't put your starting qb at risk to fake out a team for later in the season, especially a qb with an injury history. i think reallity is finally sinking in for some of the homers tonight. all those threads about what our record was going to be this season and putting a W in the win column against this same giants team looks laughable now.. i've been saying all along people were inflating the talent of this jets team and i got hammered for it by a lot of the sunshiners, as if i wasn't a true jets fan for not wanting to be blind with all the holes still on this team. i was concerned with what i saw last year with the play of d'brick and wasn't a believer like most that he was a shoe in to be a top talent tackle, just because he was a high pick for the jets under tangini, and could never have a 1st rd bust. well, i don't see 1st rd bust but i do see some over valuing of his true talent. he may be good someday but he's a long ways from that right now and i see him as only being good, nothing great... all and all, it's still just preseason and i'm not gonna be disheartened from what i've been seeing so far. the 3rd preseason game teams go out and play hard for 2-3 periods to gage what they really have and this team will definitely be taking a step back this season. not all that bad of news really(higher draft pick), considering i thought the team took advantage of the cream puff schedule and non injury year to the ultimate, a sign of very good coaching.. the reallity is this team still has a lot of holes on o and d that is going to take another couple of years (hopefully) of rebuilding, and thats if we're stellar in our drafting. after watching d'brick up to this point, i still wish we had taken the qb from usc matt l. in that draft. oh well, i certainly never get what i wish for most of the time. in a perfect world ????
i agree, he doesn't block the run very well, not powerful enough. but then again, he didn't do all that great pass blocking either. lastly, last night he did indeed suck!!!!
The biggest positive of thenight was that theywore the gren socks w/ the white uni's instead of the green stripes. other than that: -Revis looked very good out there -Clemens played well again -Leon in the open field is amazing -Harris showed dome flashes -McCareins continues to impress -Danny Ware -Chad threw the ball well, just never had time to throw. Negatively: -Our Lines are absolutely dreadful. If that does not improve we wil be lucky to win 6-7 games this year. -REMOVE BEN GRAHAM FROM HOLDING!!!!!!! How many botched holds must we go through w/ this guy? why can't Brad smith hold then we also have a fake option? -run D was atrpcious -no pass rush as usual(can we scrap this 3-4 thing already?) -Graham, as usual, was very inconsistent w/ his punts -Bender was brutalized, I hope someon decent gets cut. -Brick looks WORSE than h did last year, he's picking up where he left off when he ranout of gas late in '06. I could go on and on w/ the negatives all day but I'll stop there.
Look, Kendall's gone, it's utterly irrelevant whether he would have made the line better. FWIW, my opinion is that any improvement would have been negligible. We need better players up front. We've been lightweight since the tail end of 2004. Mawae and Kendall were and are weak, they lacked power, that's why I'm not sad to have neither. With Mangold in, that's one position attended to, but I think we need to aim higher than a cut to complete the line. I hope the front office isn't using the "it'll work itself out" theory here.
The Gints DLine embarrassed our OLine. Their OLine embarassed our DLine. It will be a long year if that continues.
We will keep extra blockers in to help in pass protection and on defense we will blitz more... both of which might work for a little while but in the end will hurt more often than not. With our schedule, this is going to be a long season... KC will be in after the bye week... no doom and gloom here just looking at the current team and facing facts. I hope I am wrong but with that schedule...
who was the starting OLine last year? All of a sudden -- the same guys -- minus one -- are the worst ever?
nice to see some reality here from the offseason predictions of 10, 11, or 12 wins.... ah screw it, think i'll just start a new thread with this stuff jil
There's trouble in JET CITY. The heart of the team sucks (OL & DL). Management did not address our offensive issues in the draft or free agency. We might just have the worse OL in the league. If something don't happen soon our QB, whom every that may be, we will be extremely lucky. I'm really starting to question T & M?s thought process. We don?t have the personnel to play the 3-4 defense effectively. Why is the coaching staff trying to make the players adapt to the system rather than adapting the system to the players. Additionally, we know that our DL was not solid. Why did'nt we address that problem in the off season? Is Mangini?s knowledge of defenses limited? It seems he was only schooled in the 3-4 defense. With our personnel it might be time to incorporate the 4-3. We traded our best OL to Washington and will open negotiation with Moore to renegotiate his contract. What the hell are we thinking? What the HELL is going on in JET CITY? The only coach that the Jets have had who know how to build a team was Walt Michaels?. He drafted with 2 good tackles and a outstanding DL. GOD HELP THE JETS THIS YEAR!!!!:jets: I hope I'm wrong! :drunk:
Here's my optimistic view: How do we compare to last years playoff team: Defense: The objective of this years draft was to elevate and build depth at the CB, LB and DE positions. Last year we made the playoffs and this year we're younger and better overall on D (the cost for Revis/Harris was a highly rated OG). Offense: QB-Kellen is one year closer to taking the reins and looking good in Preseason, I'm much more confident in him stepping in this year than last. RB-Leon is 1 year better, Jones is a legit starter, Barnes is a real blocking back. WR-We still have Coles/Cotchery and Macareins has stepped it up. TE - Baker should be as good as last season and ryan isn't bad. Both can catch and block. C-Mangold - 1 year better. LOT-Brick 1 year better (but needs some help to his right). ROT - Clement was solid at the end of the year and should continue this year. RG - No better no worse than last year. LG - Bender should get better with time. If Mangini thinks we're in trouble expect us to make a move. We have some extra picks next year so we could trade for a decent OG. In addition we are now in the 2nd year of a new system on both sides of the ball and our HC, OC, DC are no longer rookies in their roles.
On our BUTTTTS Did anyone else see a few plays where our OL and the our DL were all on the butts after the play concluded. I know I was watching the game and telling my wife to watch the replay and look for all the JET players on their butts. I have to say it did not look good.
All it takes is one lineman to blow an assignment and a play is shot to pieces. Nobody was calling the O-line a strength on this team before Kendal left either. A decent pass protection unit that didn't get enough push on running plays. Bender might improve the ladder, but at what price in pass protection? Add to that Pennington has been making piss poor decisions and the implications are disastrous. But hey, it's the preseason...Mangini will set up a fun house of smoke and mirrors and everything will be fine...right?
Positives: No injuries Leon is a great option. As was said, in the open field he can make some magic. JMac's catch was a beauty. Danny Ware, IMO looks better than Leon right now. Graham's punts are booming. Negatives: Leon is NOT a feature back. He is not going to get extra yards if there isn't a hole wide enough for me to score through. Without Jones, this offense is sunk. Our OLine was atrocious in the first half. On the Ware TD, however, they actually put together a fantastic set of blocks to give him the room to take off. As much as I wanted Pete Kendall out of town, his loss did weaken the OLine. And Brick needs some work, fast. The DLine couldn't push me out of the way to get to a QB. As much as I like the "idea" of the versatile 3-4, the personnel is all wrong. Speaking of the defense, it's TERRIBLE. The only reason the Giants didn't score more is because their receivers suck. Off the top of my head I can recall three balls that hit receivers right in the hands (and one that went through a guy's hands into his face,) that were dropped. Randy Moss won't let that happen. Nugent is NOT kicking well. Watch the ball. Yes, he's got more distance than last year, but not an inch more height. So maybe we'll get a few more touchbacks, but starting field position by opposing offenses is not going to improve. Chad may not be the answer. I blame a lot of the problem on the combination of a porous OLine, and a #2 RB running with the first team, but when life gives you lemons, you have to make some lemonade. Sorry Chad, you are throwing more like a girl every week. There's only so much you can be defended for that. Clemens throws a bit light on the touch. He can throw FARTHER than Chad, but so far, I haven't seem him throw HARDER, and THAT'S what matters. On short passes, he TRIES to throw hard, but he is 1) inacurate, and 2) throws some wobblers. On short passes, that's wholly unacceptable. His interception was thrown lighter than ANYTHING I've seen Chad throw. Clemens, IMO, is NOT the answer, even if Chad is done. Graham's placeholding ability is bad. ------------------ I was already saying we're a .500 team, and people should appreciate that we're only in year two of the three year plan. I see numerous people are starting to come around on that. It's not darksiding, it's just taking a realistic view of the talent base we have. We have a lot of potential, but it needs development.
