on espn radio 5th quarter J mac put things into his perspective by saying you never show a team especially if you're gonna see them regular season what you can really do. I'm really starting to think we did good by holding onto McCaerins. But I say too many mental breakdowns by the first team O and D doesnt say much about our chances so far. Vanilla for both teams baby.
Jacob Bender will be a solid player in the future, but it is too early to throw him into the fire. Someone else needs to replace Kendall. Since Bender did play at LG, that shows you the faith the team has in Clarke. I don't know the answer at LG.
Let's not kid ourselves. Revis and Harris played well. The kid Ware ran hard. Leon nice run after catch. Macareins nic catch. Nugent is kicking well... Clemens looked ok vs. 2nd team. THAT'S IT.... BOTH LINES look absolutely ridiculous and the QB can't throw.
Positives- 1) 1st Quarter: New York Jets at 15:00 5-J.Huston kicks 63 yards from NYG 30 to NYJ 7. 16-B.Smith to NYJ 21 for 14 yards (39-R.Grant). 1-10-NYJ 21 (14:54) 10-C.Pennington pass deep right to 29-L.Washington for 79 yards, TOUCHDOWN. Negatives- 1) Nothing happened after number one in positives. 2) When the kicker is mentioned first in a positive thats really a negative. 3) O-Line horrible (copy paste copy paste) 4) DT position is lacking (dont spin me on athletic small guys) 5) It's gonna be a long season and people are gonna get hurt
But on that one throw Leon was pretty much wide open. The ball seemed to take forever to get there. The touchdown was all Leon Washington. And yeah, the rest of team seems to suck. I was excited going into the season, and now i just think "ugh". Im scared for 9/9 to come.
I hate looking towards the draft when there is still a full season to play and we can definitely make some noice. However, I think there are a number of legit NT prospects in next year's draft and the Jets need to do what NE did with Wilfork and ensure that they draft him. There was nothing in terms of legit NT in this draft so I didn't care that they passed. Next year potentially has a couple of guys that could be studs BJ Raji Boston College (6'1, 340) is a senior who I'm going to follow a lot this year. The guy that I like a lot as a 3-4 NT for years to come if he declares early is Terrance Taylor. My homer Michigan friends think he's got amazing strength and leverage and I've read good reports about him. We'll see but I'm sure this is a debate for another day
Add E Coleman to the positives. Pouha got a lot of PT in the first half. Pass rush was again a neg, hopefully just vanilla play calling. Nuge KO's were great tonight.
i think people need to relax a little.. its our first game with a 6th round rookie replacing an 11 year veteran at guard, and ferguson already has a short history of getting beaten pretty badly. outside of those 2, the offensive lines play wasnt as bad as people are making it seem. most of them were still in the third quarter, and they opened up some nice holes for ware, even tho it was the second string defense. on top of that, the giants are known for having a great pass rush for quite awhile now, thats what their defense is pretty much known for. so one of the better pass rushing units in football beat up on a line that is still being put together.. so what? lastly, i think mangini and schottenheimer do realize that the o-line is not quite up to par for the competition they will be facing this year, and thats where i think alot of the trick plays involving brad smith or even coles on reverses will come in, not to mention chad reading defenses and being allowed to change the plays. little things like that i think will work in our favor to at least disguise that the o-line is not quite ready to hold its own consistently. but as alot of people were saying, offensive gameplans have obviously been kept "vanilla" to not give away any of the surprises for the regular season. just some thoughts.. and i dont think its time to panic this badly yet, and especially not talk about next years draft when we are 2 weeks away from opening kickoff...
The first team O-line was horrible as stated. They never really gave Pennington a chance. Watching Bender get schooled by a speed rush is something Jets fans should get used to unless a decent vet becomes available. Where looking at giving up 50+ sacks this year, and it will ruin our season. Another thing to consider is that Washington was our feature back. The guy is talented no doubt, but he's certainly not the kind of guy that can move a pile. Jones will certainly take some stress of Pennington, but I can't see him fairing much better with the state of this line. Nobody wants to admit it, but Brick isn't living up to his draft position. He certainly won't look any better with a division II 7th round draft pick starting next to him. The defense looks the same as last year. That doesn't worry me anywhere near as much as the O-line though. The D was bend but not break...we were 5th in scoring D last year. Long, time consuming drives are no big deal so long as where not giving up TD's left and right. The problem will be the offenses inability to make anything happen with opposing teams D lineman living in the backfield. Given his history, it's hard to imagine that Penny will hold up taking a beating 2-3 times a game. Were not talking coverage sacks here either. Clemens impressed again, although he was working with the first team O-line against the Giants second or third team D. His passes down field gave Jets fans something to be optimistic about. Chances are he really wouldn't fair much better then Pennington against a first team D though. He would certainly open up more options on offense then Pennington would, and that in itself may be reason enough to give the kid his shot now. People are wondering whether or not Clemens is worth a 6-10 season. Unless we get help on the O-line, I really don't think it will matter who's back there after seeing what I saw tonight.
Brick sucks, period. I'd like to see him at guard and try Bender/Clarke at tackle. Could it get worse? Edited for spelling.
Positive- I believe there was no major injuries to any Jet tonight. Negative - The O line and the D line suck ass.
I think this whole game is the Jets setting the Giants up for when they meet in the regular season. I would not (for a SECOND) put it past Eric Mangini to be playing head games with the Giants in the preseason lulling them into a false sense of security. After all the regular season is all that matters. He didn't put Pennington at risk, and the JETS did WIN.
Any QB is at risk the way our O-line played. You don't play to give up sacks. The Vikings dominated our line last week, and the Giants got enough pressure that Pennington had negative yardage excluding the opening play. Different schemes and trick plays will only get us so far. Teams will find ways to expose our O-line and it will cost us games.
So the Jets will probably have 9 picks next year... so, which position do they need to reinforce? I see the need in: LG/RG/RT/NT/ROLB/TE with a blissful hope that DeWayne Robertson can handle DE position decently. If Kenyon happens to suck, add DE on the list too, as none of the reserve DEs are worth keeping either in that they can't even beat Kenyon and Kenyon sucks too. Good thing they have 2 extra picks! They will need that extra pick to cover the massive holes all over the places. They should definitely send the two 4th picks for higher picks (preferably 2nd if possible, but 3rd wouldn't be bad)
Don't worry about the sacks. Clemens didn't get sacked. You have to think like the FO is thinking. They know that Chad isn't going to take them all the way. Clemens is the future.
That statement makes me wonder. Did Mangini send Clemens out with the first team O-line because they sucked so bad that he felt they needed more work, or was he just protecting the future? :drunk:
Chad might get the Jets to 8-8. Personally I'd rather see Clemens get a shot at doing that even if the downside is they might go 6-10.
Couldnt agree more. Revis was outstanding..he did arm a couple tackles..but his coverage one on one was surprisingly..outstanding. Harris was the best player on defense...i put him on binocular at least 5 plays and was lucky enough to see 2 outstanding pursuits and tackles. He has a nose for the ball. Penningtons touchdown pass was flat out underthrown..in fact..I turned to my wife and said "look how open Washington is!!...oh my god...he is not leading...its underthrown". All this while the ball was in the air. He just doesnt have nor get how to throw a deep pass. Dbrick was not good...Bender was just as bad..and the blindside for Chad is going to be a problem. If I were him..I would switch to Lefty and fast..perhaps he might have more zip too. Vilma made a couple good plays..but was really burnt on two passes in his direction. For the record...didnt want to make a post on this one but Im one pretty proud dad tonite..my son did play at halftime for the Wayne Boys club and had two tackles. If any of you were at the game he was number 26 out of the tunnel first waving his arms for noise from the crowd. He is a shy kid and I have no idea where the hell that came from. Thanks for all the well wishes.
