I think the Jets are holding on to him just to suspend him for conduct detrimental to the team for the first four weeks of the season. That way he loses four game checks then gets released a month into the season. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jets don't already have a thick file with all episodes, quotes and tantrums for the grievance hearing that will inevitably take place.

It has always been surprising to me why the Jets, who value chemistry and team play so high, would hold onto Kendall. It was clear from early in camp that he needed to go, so the Jets were never going to get a high draft pick. I wonder what the real situation is? (but understand that no one will ever know.)

Suspend him for what? Wanting more $$, Speaking his mind?
He's done nothing "Detimental to the team".
Plus he is a Player rep, no way the Jets do that it'll just blow up in their face and be a distraction, which IMO is already a big enough issue caused by the FO.

Conduct deterimental to the team has a wide interpretation. I would think that speaking out directly against the management and the coach repeatedly could be construed as that. More importantly, publicly stating that other people are siding with him and don't think that what management is doing is right is probably a textbook example of CDTtT.

What does being a player rep have to do with anything? Do you really think the union is happy he is publicly complaing? Upshaw is in the pocket of the NFL, I can't imagine he is too happy with Kendall. Of course they would fight on his behalf, but I don't think that being a player rep has anything to do with that.

I am pretty sure that the Kendall situation is a distraction already.

i seriously doubt they are just waiting till sept. to suspend him for this. no way would they just sit back and log all this disruption, just to get a suspension and loss of 4 game checks.

i think they know they need his services and have no depth to even consider cutting him. i think they are trying to make him honor his contract and just trying to endure the disruption until the season starts. then hopefully things die down and the team gets on with playing football.

at least i hope this is the scenario, b/c if it isn't, they are using very poor judgement handling this certain situation and will lose the respect of the players....

    Kendall close to being ex-Jet

After several months of acrimony, the Jets and Pete Kendall are parting ways - finally.

The Jets, trying to move past a bizarre and ugly chapter, were on the verge last night of trading the disgruntled left guard to an undisclosed team, NFL sources told the Daily News. Multiple teams expressed an interest once the Jets made it clear they wanted to move Kendall, 34, a starter for the Jets since he arrived in 2004.

Kendall is expected to receive a new contract, and it's believed he will earn at least $2.7 million for the coming season. He was due to make $1.7million from the Jets and was seeking a $1million raise, but they refused to renegotiate his deal, which had three years and $6.1 million remaining.

In return, the Jets will get an undisclosed draft choice. As of midnight, details of the trade still were being finalized. An announcement is expected this morning. Kendall must pass a physical before the trade is official. Kendall's agent, Neil Schwartz, declined to comment.

It became apparent yesterday that something was brewing because Kendall was pulled off the practice field by GM Mike Tannenbaum.

Kendall didn't practice the last two days because of an injury to his right shoulder, which doesn't appear serious. While riding a stationary bike on the sideline, he was approached by Tannenbaum. The GM invited Kendall to his office, according to an eyewitness - an indication that a deal was in the works. A few minutes later, Kendall was back on the bike.

The Jets rid themselves of a headache, but the quality of their offensive line takes a hit.

They will turn over the left-guard job to rookie Jacob Bender or Adrien Clarke, whose NFL resume consists of only 13 games and four starts, all with the Eagles in 2005. Clarke started the first two preseason games, but the new flavor of the week is Bender, a sixth-round pick from Nicholls State. Bender, working with the regulars this week in practice, probably will start Saturday night against the Giants.

Kendall's relationship with the Jets deteriorated in June, when he went public with his bitterness, claiming the organization had reneged on a promise to renegotiate his contract. Since then, he has ripped the Jets at every opportunity, trying to hasten his release by becoming a nuisance. He threatened to hold out, hoping they'd release him before camp, but the Jets called his bluff, creating a sideshow in camp.

The Jets gave Kendall plenty of fodder for complaining. They gave away his starting job, assigned him to the rookie dorm on the first day of camp and made him double as a backup center, a position they know he hates. In last week's game, he misfired on two shotgun snaps, one of which was returned for a touchdown by the Vikings. There were whispers that he did it on purpose as a form of protest, but he insisted that wasn't the case.

On Sunday, Kendall learned that Bender, a small-college rookie, had moved ahead of him on the depth chart, yet another indignity. Disgusted, Kendall made a remark that's considered borderline heresy in the NFL, suggesting he wouldn't take pain-killing injections in order to play hurt. In 2004 and 2005, he took needles for various injuries, missing only one game.

Kendall took a pay cut after the 2005 season and, after a strong performance last year, he felt he was entitled to a bump in pay. But the Jets refused, claiming it would set a dangerous precedent by renegotiating a deal that ran through 2009. They were afraid that other players, claiming to be underpaid, would make a stink.

The Jets held their ground, showing they weren't going to be bullied by a player. It was a strong statement, but they also lost a quality player in the process.

If Kendall was traded what would be "fair" value for a 34 year old guard as far as say a draft pick goes?/ just curious

i would rather an o-lineman NOW in a trade, for depth, as opposed to an
    'undisclosed future draft pick'

Please dear God, let it be Oakland, and a Second or Third rounder.

If he goes to Oakland, he's going to be looking at teams coming full on every down, and they might win all of three games.

He's a much better than average starter, under contract for three years, for a fairly low amount of $$$$$ considering what the position commanded this off season.

The only knock on him is his age.

We got a 6th or 7th, for a guy that has never played a down in the nfl, by the team that cut him several weeks ago.

Wow this was a nice way to start the morning.

The Masshole will soon hit the road- good riddance Petey- you stunk up the place over the course of the last few months.

Now, let's see just how much a team OVERpaid for your services. Let's hope that Hobbes prediction rings true, though I see it more as a 5th, POSSIBLY a 4th.

6th or 7th - any better than that and we fleeced somebody. Everyone knows we have to cut him.

Any speculations as to what team? I'm not so up on who needs guard help.

An NFC team who we don't play so no info is given away..A 4th rounder would be a unbelievable for a 34 yr old guard with diminishing skills, plus a loudmouth and union lapdog

Sounds like just the opportunity for the Redskins- it wouldn't be a football season if the Redskins didn't part with some of their draft picks.

I think that we do play them this year ( don't we?) but I don't see the Jets limiting the teams to only those who are not AFC and those we don't play this year.

Everyone knows he is leaving but if their is a high demand by multiple teams for him then the jets can ask for more.

We've got to get you a new username- most folks don't even remember him as being our 3rd string TE for one season.
