The biggest surprise for me was the running of Danny Ware. this kid has good raw instincts and will be invaluable as a 3rd RB , better than Houston? Maybe. DRob caught the eye and attracted alot of attention from the Oline. Bobby Hamilton still looks timeless. Von Oelhoffen , how long are we going to keep this guy for? Coleman has to start over Kimo. Bryan Thomas needs a dominant RDE in front of him otherwise hes going to get lost. At FS we are thin to say the least and wonder if Ray Ventrone or J Miller can cover that. Kassel and Schlegal are gone I would think. Liked Harris and Costanzo. Costanzo hits like a beer truck. WRs , man we have some depth there. Baker I hope will see alot more of the ball , Ryan looked good as well as Barnes. I wasn't sold on Tutt at all. Leon and TJ are going to be electric. It appears to me that Leon isn't content to be just the 3rd down back and will push TJ hard for more carries. Chad had a cameo appearence , in a meaningless game.Expect him to air out his new and improved arm against the eagles. I have a feeling hes going to convert a few anti-Chadsters this season. I haven't always been a Clemens fan , but he showed great poise in the pocket and really impressed me. Some really horrible floaters though , Chads coaching ,. Tui , din't have much chance to do anything. LG. zzzzzzzzzzz its all been said before. The best LG on the team still is Kendall by a country mile. I think I saw Bender play there too and do alright or did he line up elswhere on the left??? Mangold will/should be on the shortlist for the pro bowl , I look at him and can't believe this will be his 2nd year. I think some of the comments about Brick are a little unfair, with help from Lomas he will be hitting the ground running come week 1. On STs we are spoilt for choice in returners so it seems , although I'm not keen to see Leon tearing it up when he is valuable elsewhere. Wasn't the wedge good on KOR? Nooges kicks were fabulous and with a bit of swirling Meadowlands wind will make them hard to field. Benny layed the wood , how long have we waited to see that , Mr consistant. Alot of smiles on the sidelines from both coaches and players which suggests a good team atmosphere. Didn't see hardly any flight crew
I think that is exactly what will happen but Smith needs to get some confidence and just throw the damn ball. It's obvious his first choice is still to run it.
I was disappointed Chad didn't throw at all but Jone looked good, the OL looke good and Washinton lookd good as far as the staters on O. I loved what I saw from Clemens, not the 3 TDs just his poise, his comfort in the pocket. he underthrew a few rceivers which i think had more to do w/ it slipping out of his hand than anything else)though that concerns me if he plays in wet weather). Ware showed me something, I liked what i saw of Darian barnes on the few times i focused on him, Sean Ryan had a few nice grabs. Defensively I was disappointed, Rhodes got beat a couple of times, the pass rush was nonexistent, they ran well against us. The best play i saw was kenyo Coleman shedding that bloc on the 3rd and 1 and making the stop. Overall the starting D played poorly but I'm not worried. on STs we plyed great, the return teams are unbelievable no matter who we put back on KORs, Nuge showed a little more leg, Graham was booming punts and outside of 1 return the coveage looked good. I forgot to mention Brad Smith, Iwas disappointed in his play under C, he wasn't reading the D well and tucked it and ran multiple times- he got happy feet. I have high hopes for him as a QB down the line and the next 3 games I want to see some progress. As a return man, WR and on reverses he looked good- he is so damn fast we need to get him alot more touches this year.
lets face it folks the jets will have a 3 deep balanced team this year with the special teams likely outperforming the other 2 units...... i still expect to have a defense with some holes but as long as the d-line gels and the younger guys step in there and progress that should be OK. the LB are still a progress and i think they will have to upgrade the OLB position at some point during the next 2 years if they want a dominant type of defense. no slight against thomas, hobson, or barton just how it is. the OL is still a sore spot and not getting an early to mid round pick this year for the unit, to me, is a bit worrisome. this group will not dominate even with mangold and ferguson at their best so the QB's will have some tough times against the good defenses. skill positions are OK and will carry the club along with special teams. jil
Easy there. Who was Clemens doing most of his damage against. IN a couple weeks, alot of those guys will be going profesional in other areas,- not going to be football. Did you see how he looked early against better competition. That Duck he threw that his WR bailed him out by passinterference(that official blew the call) Again before you get carried away with Clemens performance remember browning Nagle and Ryan leaf how well they looked in the preseason(both were going against first string defenses that were very vanilla)
Finally, after all these years, A Jets receiver is standing in the endzone with blown coverage. Not the other way around. A TE no less and #88 to boot. It was nice to see that the Jets could just keep plugging in players all over and the play was still very good. Wanted to see Wadsworth and he finally got in did just ok. The stands looked 90% empty. Thought the place would have a good turnout just to see some Jets football. Harris looked good. My wife and I were at camp Tue and he was getting reamed.
Here is how I saw it. Special teams units were very impressive. Jets pass rush was nonexistant. Just like last year, as the only way they could get pressure, was by using exotic blitz packages. (that not going to work this year as teams will use patriots blueprint in playoffs) Jets run defense was gashed at times, as it looked like the Red sea parting.(thats how big some of those holes were) ' Joey harrington looked Great, that is alarming that first string defense made him look that good. Falcons Wr corp isn't the deepest around.(No Crumpler) First Preseason game you mostly look at first half. (thats when most your 53 man roster play) I thought Falcons were better team, that Jets special teams just were so much better than falcons.(why score was decieving at half) JMo Jets need alot of work still. Who cares what they did in second half as most of those players are not making NFL rosters.
WR's were good. Stuckey and Wright stood out to me. Nice to see some depth. Washington is electric. It is nice having some playmakers.
I don't need to see Chad throw the ball. I'm glad they just worked o the running game. It sounds simple, but just as their needs to be chemistry between the qb and wr, same with the exchange from qb to rb. Kerry Rhodes, my favorite jet seemed to be out of position alot. No reason for big alarm, but an observation none the less. I liked Drew Colemans play and I think David Harris is gonna be a solid contributor this year. WR corp on gameday will probably be Coles, Cotch, Smith, Stuckey, McCariens
I agree. The even bigger issue is getting a feel for the blockers in front of you under game conditions. TJ just needs to see who does what up front, and HOW they do it so he knows how to make his "reads" as to whether there is a hole there or not, which way to cut, etc. Very hard to replicate this in practice, so I'm glad they did it when the starting OL was in. We know what Chad can do. He and his WR's have experience together. Plus we have 3 more games before it counts. I think it was very smart to use every possible play to get TJ experience with the line and accumulate video to analyze going forward. That said, it would not surprise me if the first ten plays next week were all passes, either!
definitely somepositives but for me the two biggest short-comings last night was our pass rush and our run D. neither looks improved in the slightest. I know its way early but if these two problems persist like last year this team will be capped again. slip into the playoffs and make an early exit
The biggest and best surprise for me was Bender at RT. Lets remember this guy played at Nichols State where they run the TRIPLE-OPTION. So his pass blocking in college was relegated to once a quarter. If that. He held his own, and as someone else pointed out earlier he was impressive on Ware's 20+yard run. Loved Nugent's leg stength...and he made a nice tackle. Eric Hicks looked horrible in the 3-4. He was like a matador on the Falcons TD in the 1st quarter. But when he was in during the 4-3 he was more agressive. Stuckey is very impressive. A possible Steal in Round 7. At practice he catches everything and that continued last night, plus he battles very well at the LOS as well as down field - he is not thrown off his routes by the DB's. Clarke at LG showed he has average to above average speed and pulled nicely on some 1st quarter runs. Barnes at FB. WOW!. How about that block on the backside DL or LB on TJKs 1st quarter run for 5+ yards. He demolished him.
I didn't become a Clemens fan last night, chico. I became a fan of him in 2003 when he first received meaningful playing time at Oregon. I never liked Ryan Leaf, by the way. Even while he was setting records at Wazzou, he didn't impress me much.
The defense in general was pretty disturbing. As you said, no rush defense and no pass rush. DB's were getting beat, Rhodes on a couple of plays that I can remember. Against the Falcons offense no less. I don't think the CS was scheming too hard for this one, but all the same it looked eerily reminiscent of last season.
I like gunslingers. I don't like QBs who are afraid to make mistakes. Ken O'Brien was such a guy. He was only good for a couple years and all the times he was hit and sacked soon took their toll. David Carr is another tackling dummy who will have a hard time realizing his potential. Patrick Ramsey is another guy who got sacked too much. Taking a sack is rarely good. I understand your point about occasionally eating the ball and taking a sack, but I don't like it when passers get too comfortable with that.
Who cares when you became a clemens Fan. The Point is the same K Clemens did most of his damage, against guys that won't be on anyone 53 man roster.(understand chico, because I am the man) Unlike Ryan Leaf who was more impressive than Peyton manning in preseason . Really dosen't matter because what you see in Preseason,(vanillla schemes) is not what your going to see in regualar season. Again See Browning Nagle who looked like next coming of Joe Willie namath in preseason. (against basic defenses) More complex defenses and dumb hick came back tom reality.
No thats actually the real way it's pronounced. Ian Eagle does his homework. Including talking to players and asking them how you pronounce their names. He's a very intellgent person, unlike the man he was working with. But i gotta tell ya, listening to Buttle during the game is much better than on SNY.
