Absolutely terrific report, Jetcane. This is all stuff you don't hear about from the "professionals." It sounds like they worked them pretty good despite the heat today. That's good... that's what camp is for, IMO. The longer Kendall is in there, the better our chances of him just playing, period. There's not much else to talk about. I read in this morning's Star-Ledger that Mangini stated that CB Manny Collins got "thrown into the fire" the other day after just reporting to TC and he did pretty well. It sounds like they did the same thing again this morning by having Penny go to his side to see what he's got. This kid is an undrafted Rutgers product who was basically hanging around waiting and just got the phone call from the Jets the other day. I guess with Miller, Dyson and Eric Smith a little dinged up and Revis still unsigned, it doesn't hurt to get a look at this kid. Great report man... Thanks a lot!
Could you imagine if Mangini just turned around and said "Hey Mike, just tell Revis he can re-enter the draft next year, I found the guy who's going to start next to Dyson already." People on this board would riot.
Great job Jetcane. No Leon? Hmmmm.... I was supposed to go this am... now I'm po'd I didnt make it. You going tomorrow morning?
Thanks for the report. Are you saying Bender is getting his reps at guard? You said "next to Wicker" but I wasn't sure which one was where?
Thanks! Yep, I see you're all over the Collins story. i figured a lot of you guys are RU fans, so i'd let you know he was in there today. I thought today was one of the most demanding practices of this year's camp, with the heat factored in and all the contact going on.
Really great report , thanks. Loads of encouraging stuff there. Hope you're not too dehydrated. Had a really fantastic NFLE , if he continues like this , I'm getting his Jersey! SHIT! Clarke over Kendall????? What a decision to make. Purely football , Kendall. Yes Clarke is big ,but is he going to be ready for the opening day? More great news , this will help us ALOT.
Yep, Wicker was playing rt. guard and Bender was at RT. I think Smith was the center, and Clarke and Jones were on the left side. T-Bird, i'm going to try to make it back out there tmw a.m.
Yeah, definitely not Camp Marshmallow. The afternoon practice is going to be even worse - the humidity outside is brutal today. We've had numerous discussions on this board for many years actually, about soft camps vs. tough ones. And there's never been a direct study linking injuries to degree of workout in TC, but it's got to help in that department. I remember watching the '05 Camp, with Herm curiously walking around in his ever-so-ridiculous long-sleeved sweatshirt (102 degrees), but with no real work being done, and with Dinger standing around motionless, "setting the pace" with elbow propped up on his belly while his hand supported his chin, as if deep in thought. Yeah... uh-huh. He couldn't wait to get off that field. The only one working hard and barking stuff was none other than Mike Westhoff, which is why I was delighted to see him being retained by Mangini. That was the BEST coaching move this new regime ever made (well... maybe 2nd to bringing in Schottenheimer)... but you get my point. At any rate, after that soft camp that summer, we go into Arrowhead Stadium for the season opener and the Chiefs proceed to push our people all over the field. I remember thinking (I swear to God... these were my exact thoughts)... Oh My God, I was right about Camp. The first 15 minutes of that game had me so upset I wound up in the fetal position because I just KNEW this team wasn't ready for shit. I thought Pennington was going to leave that game on a stretcher. And the whole camp thing came down on me as I realized what Herm had done with all his nonsense and soft camp stuff, and I haven't forgiven the bastard to this day. Collins is an interesting story and I hope he does well. He's 5'10" and listed about 190 or so, if memory serves, so he's not the biggest corner in the world, but neither was my man, Ray Mickens. You have to love his work ethic. He was quoted in the paper that he knows this is his one shot. He even tried to get into the Canadian league, but with no success. So when the phone rang and it was the Jets asking him to report to Hofstra, he nearly fell off the chair. I'll be watching him and pulling for him.... can't wait to see the game Friday night, I'm sure he'll be in there some of the time... probably 3rd and 4th quarters.
I recall Nuge was doing similar to this last camp (correct me if I'm wrong). But by Dec/January in the cold his distance really fell away.
Actually, Nuge was never kicking deep at any time last year. In TC, I remember T-Bird and I discussing that Nuge was quite possibly even doing this on purpose (kicking off to the 10-15). The reality was, he didn't have it. He didn't have enough "ass," as I put it. I met the guy in TC, in fact, and got his autograph. And it amazed me how small in stature he really is. But this deficiency (kicking short) became evident in the regular season, where we were losing field position because of this. I even think it got into his head a little bit, because it caused him to miss simple FGs from the 39-42 yard range early on. But that's all history now (I hope). He was belting them pretty good the two days I was there and reports coming out of camp have him kicking deeper, the result of him doing extensive weight training during the off-season. I'm still remotely concerned, but his recent improvement plus his accuracy on 45+ kicks more than makes up for a few yards at the other end, IMO. Coupled with Graham, I think we've quite possibly got the most awesome kicking combination of any team in the NFL right now.
Maybe the joke is on us....Sydney Don doesn't have to deal with weather as cold as that which effected Nuge's kick distance.
I stand corrected however his distanced shortened as the season went on. Thats probably the bit I recall. But that is great news if has added 10 or so yards. (secretly hope BG could try kicking off but Nuge getting stronger is far better for the team) And, yes Jtuds, I can't relate to the cold winters. I had just one morning this whole winter when my car had a slightly frosty windscreen. Yesterday I was catching some rays at lunchtime in a t-shirt!
I'm going to the morning session... this sleeping in because it's too hot stuff has to stop. I'm a geezer with white hair, white beard, will be carrying a black tote bag and in a yellow shirt, so if ya wanna get together, look for me. I'll be following the offense around.
The day I left OZ was May 31, 2006 and it was 7 degrees Celsius in Sydney that morning....I didn't think your country got that cold......you guyy get to golf year-round....
Yes. Some attributed this to "kicker's fatigue" or some such thing. It was surmised that he was trying too hard and practicing too much to get the distance and this actually contributed to diminished distance. But I still say, in hindsight, this was all BS. He's a young kid with no "ass" and found it harder to kick the NFL ball the distance. Many kickers need time to develope and mature and he's no different. It looks like he's emerging from this funk now, however (at least it appears so), and I think we'll see the kicker this year that we envisioned when we drafted him. As I said in my TC report last week, one of his field goals was so high and so strong, it hit the cage surrounding the camera man, which was dead-on the uprights and at a height of about 45+ feet.
