McCareins: Good Day Not to Take Off

    By Randy Lange

08/01 ? Eric Mangini's announcement about Chris Baker and Justin McCareins sitting out today's practice was premature. Both players earned a practice off after being on a winning team during an off-season competition.

Baker took his day off, which meant standing in the 90-degree heat and watching his fellow tight ends sweat in pads.

McCareins put his day off back in the bank and practiced full. Good thing, too, because he was on the winning team again.

In fact, McCareins caught the winning touchdown. It came at the end of the first offense's latest two-minute drill at the end of the longest practice of camp. The offense, trailing, 23-17, with 1:54 left, drove to the defense's 5. On the last play, Chad Pennington scrambled to his left, finding no one open ? until McCareins scrambled to the corner of the end zone and cradled Pennington's pass for the touchdown with 0:00 on the scoreboard clock.

"Nice job, guys," Pennington praised his defense when it was over.

Pennington also did some nice work with Jerricho Cotchery, completing two long passes during the practice to No. 89 past No. 31, Hank Poteat.

Kellen Clemens tried to find Brad Smith a couple of times in 7-on-7 work. The first time, over the middle, CB Drew Coleman stepped in front for the interception. The second time, down the sideline, Smith snatched the long ball away from Coleman and S Raymond Ventrone.

In early 7-on-7 work, Leon Washington leaped a crowd of players, drawing a reaction from the crowd of fans. Then Alvin Banks burst through the line for two nice runs and newcomer Tony Hollings slanted for another nice unscathed run.

Free agent WR Evan Prall had a tough set of plays, fumbling on a handoff and next play dropping a pass.

DE Bobby Hamilton went down early with an injury but seemed OK and returned, stopping a swing pass from Pennington to Thomas Jones.

Mike Nugent hit four consecutive 40-plus field goals in the first half of practice, then kicked the "game-winning extra point" after McCareins' catch.

Chansi Stuckey made the catch of the day, leaving his feet and extending for a Clemens sideline throw. Stuckey landed out of bounds, but the effort is worth remembering.

Owner Woody Johnson and president Jay Cross watched the practice from the sidelines.

It was hot. It was sticky. It was the longest practice of training camp. And they loved it.

At least two in particular did. I?m speaking of Michael Haynes and Andre Wadsworth, two guys who thought their football careers were through. Now they?re drenched in sweat, hurting from two-a-days, and thrilled to pieces. They?re the character guys the Jets are always talking about wanting to keep around. Now all they have to do is prove their worth on the field.

Speaking of character, the Jets allowed both TE Chris Baker and WR Justin McCareins to take the day off. It was a reward for winning an offseason contest which went unspecified by Mangini. Baker gladly stood on the sidelines and watched the proceedings, but McCareins was on the field in full pads. According to the Jets PR staff, he wanted to ?save his freebie.? I guess he thinks it?s going to get hotter before it gets cooler. Quite a transformation for McCareins, from a wanted poster last year to Mangini poster boy this season.

Brad Smith made three remarkable catches as a WR today, one of them one-handed while spinning around to keep his feet in bounds. Maybe he should stop making those grabs, he?s starting to make his competition at QB look a little too good! Stacy Tutt also made a nice leaping catch over the middle in 1-on-1 route-running drills.

Bobby Hamilton had to leave practice after it appeared that the big guy had his leg rolled. He was able to walk off the field and stuck around for a little while, but eventually he walked into the training room and missed the last, oh, third or so of practice. It looked like his left hip was the problem.

The Jets offense scored I a hurry-up situation when Pennington hit McCareins for a 10-yard pass on fourth down with eight seconds remaining. Nugent hit the PAT to give the Jets the lead (24-23 over the Jets), but not until after a delay of game penalty was called. The team was a little too busy celebrating it?s victory, even when it was only a tie.

Not much from Pete Kendall today, other than the fact that he was on the field practicing and off the field signing autographs. Each day certain players are selected to sign at different locations around the field after practice, and today was Pete?s turn to work the rope line by the VIP tent. He signed a few hats and shirts, but no contract offers.

By the way, in contrast to Wadsworth and Haynes, Pete?s take on training camp was ?It?s too hot and it?s too long.?

Finally, don't plan on coming out to watch practice on Sunday. The Jets are moving the workout to a top-secret, Dick Cheney-like, undisclosed location and it will not be open to the public. It'll be just like last year, when the team practiced travelling to Gi@#&$ Stadium. Only this time, the Jets had a run in with the Police. That's right, Sting and the boys will be Syncronicity-ing at the Meadowlands so the Jets had to look elsewhere.

    A hot one

    By Andrew Gross

Earlier today, coach Eric Mangini announced tight end Chris Baker and wide receiver Justin McCareins had earned the right to take a practice off, based on them winning an offseason competition.

Baker exercised that right today while McCareins changed his mind and decided to practice in today?s lone session. He?s banking his Get Out Of Jail Free card for later in training camp. It can be used whenever he wants, we?ve been told.

I?m not so sure Baker wasn?t the smarter one today.

Baker, who was on the field in shorts, laughing happily as his teammates practiced, missed a two hour, 36 minute marathon, which, I?ve been told by people who have seen every practice since Friday, it?s the longest one of training camp so far.

Did I mention it was hot, too?

(Not that I?m complaining, I?m still excitement boy).

    Anyway, some practice notes?

Pete Kendall was back on the field after missing two days with an undisclosed injury (we?re guessing right leg). Though he did get some reps with the first team in the red zone portion, he?s still a disgruntled left guard, saying later there?s been no change in his situation. He also said there?s been no dialog so there?s no clue on his part how long it will take this soap opera to play out.

Kendall did sign autographs for fans after practice. He joked he was only signing his number (66) while he was jokingly asked whether any contracts had been waved at him from the sidelines.

Brad Smith caught a real nice ball from Kellen Clemens down the sidelines in 7-on-7 action and seventh-round pick Chansi Stuckey made a good, leaping grab over his left shoulder, unfortunately landing out of bounds. Stuckey also looked good on a crossing route in the two-minute drills, collecting another pass from Clemens.

Clemens also tried to connect with Smith to the right sidelines, drawing an interference call on safety Erik Coleman.

More tomorrow from the next installment of two-a-day practices.

I love the conflicting reports on Bobby.

'DE Bobby Hamilton went down early with an injury but seemed OK and returned, stopping a swing pass from Pennington to Thomas Jones.'

'Bobby Hamilton had to leave practice after it appeared that the big guy had his leg rolled. He was able to walk off the field and stuck around for a little while, but eventually he walked into the training room and missed the last, oh, third or so of practice.'

But besides that it looks like both sides are going at eachother pretty good. Stuckey is making a name for himself it appears.

Wierd. 227 and I saw him. He never left the field, but was under the trainer's tent for a good half hour. When he came back out, there was a wet spot on his left shoulder, and his left arm was hanging... he clearly couldn't move it. He stayed out there, but never put any pads back on.

This is strange to me also, DenniYork, because my report was different yet (and the only true and correct account, I might add) AHEM!

Seriously, Bobby Hamilton injured his shoulder. They iced it in the trainer's tent about 75 feet from where we were standing at the fence on the west side of the field. As far as I could tell, he did NOT go back in after he was injured. I checked on him through my binoculars for most of the remaining practice and he had his pads off, etc. He wandered out from the tent at the end and still only had on his gray t-shirt, which was soaked at the top of his left shoulder b/c of the ice.

So, I don't know where some of these "professionals" get their shit from. Do they just make up some of this stuff because they feel pressured to write something, ANYTHING, because they're expected to?

It's kind of funny. What, is Rock and Lange making up stuff now?! I don't see why they would feel pressured there's so much to write about. It's great we got you guys out there keeping things in perspective. Maybe you guys should scout them, LOL. j/k I'd rather hear about the JETS. Good work guys.

Thanks. What's really funny though is, these "professionals" have access to the Jets, but they're not about to get much out of them. In fact, on Hamilton, you just know they'll probably flat out refuse to give the reporters an answer on an injury like this. Which means the reporter has to get his information the "old fashioned" way, by doing what T-Bird and Kurt and I do, nosing around and looking through the binoculars, even, if that's what it takes.

It's just freakin' hilarious to me that, when they have nothing, they invent something that sounds plausable. This is patently dishonest and unprofessional reporting at it's best and at it's worst, it's downright fraudulent. "Hamilton rolled his ankle... but then shook it off and went back in with the 1st team." Good Christ, I was standing right there. It was his shoulder and he sat in the trainer's tent with his pads off for the rest of the afternoon! What TF are you looking at?

I can see where it could be mistaken that it was a leg or hip the way he was using it to rest his arm while coming off, but the going back in part and making plays is the funny $hit. It must have been really hot out there and Lange was seeing a mirage. You guys rule. Maybe you guys should tell Lange to keep hydrated as you walk by. LOL

Actually, the more I'm thinking about it, Lange and all the other reporters might possibly have been over at the southeastern corner of the grass field sucking up to Woody and Jay Cross at the time of Hamilton's injury. This is not out of the realm of possiblity. I didn't know Woody was even on the ground at Hofstra until I read about it today, but he was. And we did see the chopper come in and then leave again about 10 minutes later, which is when I joked to the other guys, "What now, Woody Johnson decided to join us or what?" or something to that effect. In actuality, it WAS Woody (and probably Cross), being picked up to go back to Jersey or Manhatten after having been at the practice.

This was about 4PM or so, which is about the time when Hamilton went down right in front of us (we were at the fence now at the northwest "End Zone"), which would have been pretty much at the opposite end from where the reporters would have been had they been kissing up to Woody and Jay, looking for something really juicy.

So when they got nothing from them and instead had missed the action with Hamilton going down, they had to rely on inuendo and rumor coming down the line about Hamilton, which is where they came up with the turned ankle and him going back in. Reality is, he was sitting the whole time in his gray sweatshirt, with his jersey and pads off, getting his shoulder iced under the little "Trainer's Tent" at the southwestern corner of the grass field.

    Moore Wants, and Deserves, More

Back to work today after a long-awaited day off, which really wasn?t a complete day off. The Brandon Moore ?story? developed yesterday, so that required some leg work.

Here?s my take on Moore: He signed a horrible contract in 2004, a seven-year deal for peanuts, but he was a new starter and had no track record. He should?ve signed a short-term deal, but his agent -- his ex-agent, by the way -- screwed up. Now he?s signed through 2010, making only $1 million this season. He?s underpaid and has a right to be upset, which, I believe, is why he left camp briefly on Tuesday.

Thing is, the Jets are in a tight spot. If they re-work Moore?s deal, they will come off as hypocrites, considering they?ve told Pete Kendall they won?t re-do his deal because he has two years remaining. I?ve heard that the front office, perhaps trying to appease Moore, told him they?d address his situation once the Kendall matter is resolved.

A few reporters talked to Moore after this morning?s grueling, 2-hour, 41-minute practice, the longest of camp. Asked if he?s unhappy with his contract, Moore didn?t deny it.

?Am I unhappy? Is anybody happy with their contract? I guess everybody feels they deserve more money. I?m just here in training camp, letting my agent handle those things.?

A moment later, Moore added, ?I wish you guys would come asking to talk to me about how good I?m playing.?

    So I asked him.

?I think I?m having a great camp,? he said.

I asked him about last season.

?I feel like I had a great year last year,? Moore said.

Sounds like a guy who wants a bigger contract.

    Some practice notes:

? DE Bobby Hamilton, who suffered an undisclosed injury Wednesday afternoon, sat out. CB Andre Dyson returned after missing a couple of days, but he was limited and wasn?t running with the first team. Justin Miller and David Barrett worked as the starting corners.

? Speaking of Barrett, he went down late in practice, crumpling to the field on a brilliant, open-field move by WR Laveranues Coles. Coles caught a short pass and faked Barrett so badly that Barrett stayed in the same spot and went down like an ice-cream cone melting in the stifling heat. He got up slowly and took himself out after one play. On the sideline, he stretched his legs and appeared to be suffering abdominal/groin discomfort. Uh, oh. Remember, Barrett underwent hernia surgery in the offseason.

? CB Drew Coleman also got banged up while defending a long pass to Chansi Stuckey. He appeared to be favoring his hip.

? The depth at cornerback is starting to become an issue. That said, the Jets signed Manny Collins, formerly of Rutgers. Hey, Mr. T, there?s a guy named Revis out there who might help. Hint, hint.

? Interesting fellow hanging out in the bleachers, checking out practice. He?s there almost every day, decked out in Jets garb, taking notes. Hmmm. He?s either an extremely dedicated fan (no, it?s not Ira) or maybe a person with sinister motives. Did someone say ?spy??

? Kudos to Erin O?Brien, assistant to the head coach. She walked around during the sweltering practice, handing out ?Bomb Pops? to the media. That, of course, triggered memories of our youth, chasing down ice-cream trucks on suburban streets. That was a cool gesture, Erin. (Pun intended.)

? In an 11-on-11 drill late in practice, Pete Kendall got reps with the first team. That should help his chances of winning a letterman jacket.

? Mike Nugent made a 57-yard FG. Even more impressive, on a later kick, he booted a field goal that landed in the film tower behind the goal post. You don?t see that every day. That should?ve counted as a four-pointer.

? Eric Mangini had an interesting comment on QB Chad Pennington in today?s presser: ?He?s got a little swagger to him right now. He?s been jawing back and forth with the defense pretty good. He?s always been very confident, and justifiably so, but it?s good to see that interaction with him and the defense.? Pennington had plenty of reasons to be in a good mood today. He dad, Elwood, was up from Tennessee to watch practice. A year ago, his father suffered a heart attack. These days, his dad looks terrific. Pennington?s young son, Cole, also was on hand, carrying a toy football.

? Remember that Lomas Brown reference the other day? You?re right, Mangini, in his news conference, didn?t flatly deny my request for an interview. But later, we were told by a team official that Brown wouldn?t be available. That was the basis for me tweaking the organization. So there!

Oh, by the way, I did manage to sneak in a round of golf yesterday with my neighbor Perry, an avid Jets fan. I opened with a birdie and closed with a par. I won?t get into the 16 holes in between.

There is a really good chance that it was his perosnal helicopter. My cousin is actually Woody Johnson's personal pilot! He used to be a marine and now works for NY Aviation and does this job on the side when he has time. I'm begging him to get me some good tickets for the season.

The chopper was mostly black in color and one of the fairly "modern" looking ones. I served a year in Vietnam as a combat advisor to the ARVNs, so I kinda "notice" helicopters, to put it mildly, because I rode around in them quite often. Just the sound of them used to do a little bit of a job on me in fact, but with the passing of time I'm pretty much okay with them.

Yeah, it was definitely a VIP-type helicopter. T-Bird said he didn't even know they had a helipad at Hofstra. Maybe they don't. All they basically need is a flat area they can temporarily cordon off, free of obstructions, and keep people away long enough to get in and out.

"The offense, trailing, 23-17, with 1:54 left"

Just who the hell are they trailing?
