I guess the Yankees either didn't want Wigginton or no longer wanted to give up Proctor for him. Could be they just waited too long. I read yesterday they were holding up that deal until they found out if they had a deal for Farnsworth because they can't afford to lose both of them. In any event, I'm glad he went to Houston and not Boston even though he would just be a utility play for either of us.
The Braves traded for 1B Mark Teixeira and RHP Ron Mahay for C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, SS Elvis Andrus and two pitching prospects It is waiting for approval
Cool. That actually makes our lives easier now. Now that Wiggington and Tex are off the market, we can look solely at pitching for the next day and a half.
Desperation move from the Braves, wow did they give up alot. I hope the next rumored piece of the puzzle falls into place and they deal Renteria for some mediocre back of the rotation arm, which would almost negate the impact of this deal(except for gutting their minor league system).
The Teixeira move worries me, no matter how much they gave up. Trading Reteria for a starter would make my day though. I haven't seen anything about that. Are they retarded?
It certainly helps them in the short term, how much remains to be seen. Giving up that much value for a year+ rental seems to indicate that the Braves are trying for it all now, in a weak NL. In a couple years when their older players are gone I can't see them being much of a force. The rumor I keep hearing is Renteria for Garland, which would be absolutely fantastic.
Well I'll assume that this means that Andruw Jones will be gone and just use his money to resign Teixeira, but I do agree that trading away Renteria would be a big mistake
http://www.nypost.com/seven/0730200..._by_trade_mets_joel_sherman_and_mark_hale.htm The name in there that I'd be most interested in is Rauch. The other 3 (Cordero, Gagne, Dotel) are established closers, meaning their asking price will be exorbitant. The only one with a lower WHIP is Gagne. His K/BB rate is, at very least, on par with the others. With Heilman finding his control on the fastball and becoming a solid 8th inning man again, Rauch would be perfect for the right handed middle relief role that Mota can't handle and Smith couldn't last in.
Don't forget who Teix's agent is. He's going to test the FA market and I doubt the Braves are going to pony up what it takes to keep him.
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7074020 "In addition to reaching a preliminary agreement for Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira, the Braves are close to a deal for Royals closer Octavio Dotel, according to major-league sources." Braves going all-in. I'm going to laugh when they miss the playoffs.
Yeah, they seem awfully focused on making a run when they just aren't good enough to beat you out, and there's not a snowball's chance in hell of them winning the wild card. Desperation at it's absolute worst. They're blowing the farm for nothing. At least for once it's not the Yankees.
Mulvey + ? Castillo would, I assume, take Newhan's spot. Gotay would be our top lefty bat off the bench. Sounds good.
we did not need a 2nd baseman.. I can't complain yet without knowing the prospects but seems like a waste of prospects to me..
Gotay's not going to have a .415 BABIP forever, and that .032 isolated OBP is going to catch up with him eventually. I really like him, and I'm glad he wasn't part of the trade, but I think we're in better shape with Castillo starting.
Yeah, a lot to pay for a 1 1/2 year rental..the one thing the braves have if they want him long term (which I doubt) is that he went to Georgia Tech right there in Atlanta.
