Ferguson did not have a great 2006, but he's still our 2nd best lineman. Kendall was not terribly good last yr.
If we cut him he most likely ends up in Miami for free. FU or not I say we don't cut him until, like somebody else said, the last cut day of camp where hopefully he can't catch on with anybody and be ready to start the season. Not to mention that cutting him creates a cap hit for us (although not a big one) as he has two years left on his contract I think. Why should we do that to help him out?
The issue is debatable; more pertinent to this discussion is that the Jets are a better team with Pete Kendall on it, assuming he isn't wreaking internal havoc.
I'm still optimistic Kendall comes to his senses. He's not a stupid guy, so he must realize we can screw with him more than he can screw with us. And he did have that conversation with Mangini recently, so that's encouraging. I'm hoping Tanny finds a way to defuse the situation and get this behind us for now. In terms of wreaking havoc internally, I don't see Kendall being received in the locker room in quite the same way as last year, when his quick wit and sense of humor made him a "leader" of sorts. Everyone on the team wants to win, first and foremost, and I think Kendall's off season disruptions (outwardly critisizing Mangini and the FO) will take the edge off Kendall's likability. And our OL rookies have now made their own mark in the NFL, so they're not about to be the gullable, newbie audience Kendall had last year. I think we'll see Kendall on Friday. That's my prediction. For him to escalate this any further is professional suicide.
1st off nobody is going to give up even a 7th rounder for a guy most teams feel is going to be cut during training camp. There are only so many stupid teams in the league that throw away draft picks and the Redskins aren't in the market for a guard. 2nd even if we release his ass he won't be the only vet that gets cut during training camp. It happens all the time in the NFL. I'm sure a younger, cheaper option will become available without really losing that much in skill. Kendell is on his way out anyway and if he's not replaced this year it'll be next. Might as well get our line ready now for that Super Bowl Run in 09.
True, but I'd still rather put this to bed, get him to play one more season and be able to concentrate on other areas right now.
I always thought that locker room "leader" stuff was mostly overrated for the most part anyway. I think most guys just worry about not screwing up so they can keep their job and not get cut. While I believe Kendall definitely helped ease the learning curve for D'Brick and Mangold, I always wonder how much so-called leadership really matters to the majority of players. Other players may have appreciated the fact that Kendall was willing to speak to the press so they didn't have to, but I would bet they were just as likely to be sick of him always being in front of a microphone. Either way, if he stays, and he helps the Jets win, he'll be tolerated, and if he's gone, no one will give him a second thought on his way out the door.
Kendall was very bad last yr..... My comment wasn't an excitement about Clarke as much as it was a criticism of Kendall.
Please..Take a deep breath.. For better or worse, Kendall deserves to be paid the $1M he is asking for. The Jets had him take a paycut while under contract. He didn't ask them to cut his pay obviously. The team set the precedent. The JETS should man-up and pay the man. More importantly, Kendall is still a good player. He might not be the best guard in the league, but his ability to anchor the young left side of the line plus play center makes him a big value. Considering the fact that Mangold sat on the exercise bike during minicamps because of back issues, Kendall's ability to step in at center makes this a no brainer. I personally hate cry-baby whinning overpaid ball players, but Kendall is by no means overpaid. When you look at the money that the free agent guards got this offseason, you got to think that we still got a bargin on Kendall even if they give him the extra money he's asking for. My only wish was that he keep it in-house, not airing the dirty laundry in the court of public opinion. The smart move says keep consistancy on the o-line. Neither Clarke nor Smith are on par with Kendall. Just MHO.
No way... He deserves the 1M extra? WHY!? He "earned" 5.2M last yr and signed the deal WITHOUT a gun to his head.
I agree with Bear66. To answear your question with another....who needs who more , the Jets needing Kendall Or Kendall needing the Jets? Without the average/good Kendall our O line is worse off.
I agree. Bury this shit already. I try to look at the big picture. Pete Kendall is a blip on the radar screen. The extra $1 million he's looking for is cocktail money. He's not as big a locker room presence as everyone makes him out to be. He's just an aging lineman who knows he's got one good year left... and that's it. Let's suck it up, bring him into camp as reasonably as we can get by with (and it looks like that is what is exactly happening now) and get him on the field. Play the bastard for one more year and kiss his ass Good-Bye. We've got other fish to fry and other issues to resolve. The AFC East is going to be a bear this year. Let's not lose focus on what we're up against. Screw Kendall and the entire issue. Get it resolved and have him on the line. Brick and Mangold will each benefit from it and so will the entire offense. Suck it up guys...
Unfortunately, the FO has its ego and reputation to protect, they don't negotiate contracts that are not expiring. Great for them. They also routinely terminate contracts that are NOT expiring!! That is their right. Pete has maybe one good yr left in him, and I say he deserves to get a raise. If not from the Jets, then some other team in the league will. Its just business... nothing personal!!
Pennington: what happened to the scouting reports? what happened to off spinmove to the inside? Kendall: i don't know Chad it slipped my mind Pennington: you're a freakin primadonna Kendall you don't deserve to wear that uniform Kendall: you're right Chad im a disgrace to the Jets, i think you should trade me Pennington: If we could find somebody dim enough to take ya thats exactly what we're gonna do MANGINI: no it's not Kendall: then what are you gonna do bench me? MANGINI: nope, play you when it's your turn to play, you play, nothing changes Kendall: i don't know if that's such a good idea, i tend to forget those scouting reports MANGINI: well you're the free agent, that's your decision... Hey Chad whats the going rate for an absent minded guard who can't get anybody blocked?
