Where do the Jets fit in?
Team has no real home in NY sports scene
    By Joe Kanakaraj / SNY.tv

Darrelle Revis figures to start in the Jets backfield right away. (AP)

I noticed that the Mets had Leon Washington take batting practice with the team last week. I almost threw up in my mouth when I saw this. Although, it was rather amusing to see that David Wright claimed to be a big fan because Leon gave him the push he needed to finish second in his fantasy league (behind fantasy guru John Maine).

For years, I've had to break the New York sports stereotype of Mets/Jets/Islanders, and Yankees/Giants/Rangers. I'm one of the few that are actually die hard Yankees and Jets fans. (The other being Milton from the RF Bleacher and my old roommate John Harnett.) But, it started to make me wonder a little about the Jets territorial lines. It seems like there really isn't "Jets Nation" anywhere in the tri-state area. Granted, they have a big following in Jersey and parts of Long Island, but there isn't a clear cut area like Queens for the Mets, and the Bronx for the Yankees. Plus, those areas have a large percentage of Giants fans there as well.

Maybe it's because we never had a stadium of our own? Or maybe it's because when I grew up, Jets fans came to games to wear garbage bags over their heads.

Someday, though. It's going to happen. We're going win a Super Bowl and finally have a little piece of land in NFL History to call our own.

Training camp can't come soon enough. I mean, really. I refuse to write another boring post about the Kendall contract situation or how Derrell Revis is "still learning the system." Can we get some real practices, or what?!?!

seriously. the season cant come sooner enough. I'm not big into baseball but when i do watch its either the Marlins or the Yankees. I kinda hate and love the Yankees depending on their situation. I don't watch hockey but i know its exciting.

Jets/Yankees here as well. Although, I hate hockey so no luck there...lol. I do hate the Islanders though, but it's more because of the owner than anything else.

Jets/Mets/Rangers/Knicks here when I was a kid. Just Jets and casually watching Mets now.

The Giants have been around for nearly twice as long as the Jets. They had a 35 year head start in New York City. They have won more super bowls than the Jets and more recently also. They were by far the worst of the two teams during the late 60's and early 70's when I started watching and Giants fans were much more miserable during that decade than Jets fans.

The Jets fan base was always in Queens and Long Island. Manhattan and the Bronx were the Giants turf. Brooklyn just wanted the damn Dodgers to come home... Then Hess screwed things to hell and back by moving the Jets to New Jersey, following the Giants like a weak kitten, and they are now the majority favorite in no part of New York City proper with just a continuing base in Long Island.

The funny thing is that there are probably a larger percentage of Jets fans where I am in New London Connecticut than there are in any boro of New York City. That's mainly because anybody who hates the Patriots, and there are more than a few people in that category here, automatically loves the Jets.

Well the reason that its usually Jets/Mets Giants/Yanks is because the Jets used to play at Shea and the Giants and Yankees Stadium. Being born in 1985 this has had no effect on me, therefore I am a diehard Jets/Yanks fan.

Almost a match--Jets, Devils, Knicks, Dodgers. So close and yet so far away.

73 days. I know that from reading the other thread here.

    Jets/Devils/Yanks/Nets.

Besides football, hockey is by far the more exciting of the other 3 sports IMHO. The new arena in newark for the Devs will be awesome!!!! Those Devs/Rangers and Devs/islander games will be even more exciting.

The knicks used to be much higher.

CT is slowly growing w/ Jet fans. I still am furious that there is not ONE jets bar in the entire state. In my experiences most Long islanders and those from Queens are Jets fans. The Giants tend to rep. Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan(NYC) while the jets are more like the Tri state area team

    Same here.....

The OLD DEEP ROOTED teams of NY are the Yankees Giants and Rangers....

As a Yankee / Jet / Islander fan I have a lot of respect for Ranger fans as well as Giant fans... the Fans who's fandom has been passed through many generations...

You can see it at Islander games especially, there's no comparison to diehard Ranger fans and there's no debate. The fans are back recently for the Mets but.... It's a different crowd - A Newer crowd. Still not the New York Yankees.

But, as a Jet fan and an Islander fan I accept it and show my respect to the old Rich in history teams of NEW YORK.

    JETS / Mets / Rangers

After reading some of the history behind your stories, it's become apparently obvious why some fans are rooting for certain teams. My Grandpa was a New York Giants (baseball) fan who lived in the Bronx. The family is Rangers from old school tradition, and the enter the Mets and JETS after the JETS moved from the Polo Grounds to play at Shea.

With Tank Johnson being released it makes you appreciate the rigorous check list Tangini takes each prospect through before being on the team. It seems that Chris Henry is the only safe suspended athlete out of the 3 obvious idiots. Miller hopefully will stay out of trouble - although that biatch should have never been standing there.

    I love the JETS.

When i was growing up I really liked the Yankees and the old man loves the, but lately they've been wearing on me and I'm starting to like the Mets more than the pinstripes.

I played hockey so I don't really have a team I like. I tend to be a fan of individual players rather than a team ex. Bondra, Bure, Mario Lemieux. I think people that played the sport tend to be more of this type of fan. But a girlfriend of mine was a huge Ranger fan so she converted me to liking the rangers plus I grew up with them on MSG every night.

So you got me on JETS/Mets/Rangers/Michigan Wolverines. Hate the NBA.

I always liked the Jets and never knew about their "rebel" image until my uncle told me about it. They were the new fashionable thing in the late 60s when my uncle was in HS. I think certain people identify with this image and they will become fans of the team. I certainly embraced it once I was old enough to realize that they were the anti-thesis of the giants. I love the "underdog" role in NY and that makes us as fans 10x more passionate, which is all the more reason to love green and white.

Plus you can't beat the sweetest colors in sports :jets:
