The New York Daily News reports Curtis Martin recently re-did his contract.
Martin agreed to void the 2008 and 2009 seasons and reduced his salary for this year from $3.25 million to the veteran's minimum of $820,000. The Jets had been well under the salary cap but Martin is probably bracing to retire and wanted to make sure he wasn't any extra burden on the organization.

Does that mean that he gave up money, or just that he helped the jets play musical paper trails?

He gave up the money and saved $2.4 million on the salary cap for this year.

I would expect this since he hasn't stepped on the field for about a season and a half.

Still , he didn't have to do that , and I'm sure the Jets wouldn't have asked him to either.

    CMart is the man

Can this guy do no wrong? Even now, when he hasn't seen the field for a season and a half almost, everything CMart does benefits this organization to the utmost.... It's almost getting boring by now. Curtis Martin is the best thing that's happened to the New York Jets since they signed Joe Willie Namath.

Yeah, he is a great. He wasn't going to see that money, but he didn't have to go the extra mile either.

I love Martin, but I am not sure I really understand the big deal here. He restructures his contract for the next 2 years, although it is practically a given he will not play. Is this better because of the money saved on the cap versus the hit we would take if he retires? Is this value in cap money saved worth the spot on the roster he takes up?

When the Deal was originally done I was Irate!!

    Now you see why.
C-Mart just saved the day (Future cap wise) and proves how Idiotic Bradway was.

Not only cause the Money but a few of us knew he was done.

I can't really think of many Athletes in pro sports who would do that.

They need to retire his number as soon as possible. Nobody deserves that honor more.

There MUST BE some sort of handshake deal for Curtis to be a coach or with the organization in some capacity as soon as he officially retires...He is the consumate professional, but no one gives up 2+ million when they are in their 30's becaue they are a nice person. Sorry it does not happen....

....and in NO WAY am I bashing Curtis...... just think it through....Mangini and Tannenbaum ONLY want players that are cut from the CMART mold and what better way to make sure that the young guns understand what needs to be done then to have the protypical Mangini player REMAIN within the organization.

Agreed. Hes a do'er not a watcher. He has stipulated before that once he finishes playing he will cut ties with football.
