Jets | McCareins unlikely to be released Sat, 2 Jun 2007 07:50:43 -0700 Dave Hutchinson, of the Star-Ledger, reports New York Jets WR Justin McCareins, who is set to earn $2.9 million this season, has looked sharp in offseason workouts and is unlikely to be released by the team. Good. We are weak at WR and if he can up his game , I'll be happy with WR core going into '07 season. #1~Coles #2~Cotchery #3~McCareins #4~B Smith #5~ Either Dwight or W Wright #6~ Stuckey If Stuckey can show his fitness , I don't see why he couldn't elevate himself to the #5 or maybe even #4 spot. WR JUSTIN McCAREINS On what he thinks about the trade rumors ... I have always tried to worry about things that I can control. There are a lot of things that are out of my hands and decisions that are made that I have no control over. All I can do is control how I react to my situations and worry about myself. I feel like I am doing a good job. I am personally doing well and I am contributing to the team right now. On how he feels ... I feel as good as I have ever felt. My skills are improving and I feel like I am coming to work focused and I am practicing hard and having a good time. On what he has done to prepare for the season ... I have been making some strides in the weight room, and physically, my speed and my abilities as a receiver have improved. And that is all I can try to do, prepare myself as best I can. On if he feels pressure to do well ... I don’t feel any more than before. I am a pretty self-motivated guy. I try not to worry about it. People are always going to have something to say about you positively or negatively after an up-and-down year. I try not to let it affect me too much. I know when I am doing well and I know when I am playing my best, practicing as hard as I can and focusing as best I can. That’s what I try to do: meet my own standards. On if trade rumors have affected his preparation ... I am a New York Jet until they tell me to leave and I will continue to work hard every time I walk into this building and out onto this field. I am going to be doing things 100 percent and preparing myself. Even if I ended up somewhere else, what would it hurt for me to keep working as hard as I can? I am a professional football player and I strive to be the best I can be. On being upset about trade talks ... There is nothing guaranteed in football or in life, but I feel my skills are as good as anyone out there. That doesn’t mean that everyone else will feel that way. All I can control are what situations are put in front of me and to do the best that I can. On if he feels like he is in limbo ... It hasn’t felt and I don’t think it will feel any different than every other off-season. I try to practice and prepare like I am being cut no matter what season I played in the league. This is a competitive business and I am not going to go out half-stepping any day of the week. I am going to continue to prepare like I am going to be on the team and practice like nothing is guaranteed, and I have always approached things that way.
I took this as a PR campaign to try to raise JMaC value in a attempt to get something for him cause they know they will be cutting him & will get zero when they take that action
We should get rid of him. He's wasting space on the depth chart, and he's not worth almost 3 million.
Nobody is trading for him now. The only way to trade him is in training camp if a team desperately needs a WR and then you can expect a 5th or 6th round pick at best, which is doubtful considering his salary. I would rather keep him at this point.
Ah come on you surely heard the adage nothing ventured nothing gained. If you do not try you never know right? We will all see the end result of him with us as the sands of time go down the hour glasses
I don't know about that Justin, it's those "things" that ended up out of your hands that got you into this spot...
I have a feeling that J-Mac is going to be on the roster this season. Maybe he'll restructure his K but I wouldn't be surprised if he stuck around for the same price tag. I think he'll be in better shape and playing harder than he has in the past because he'll realize that the only way to raise his stock is to play by Magini's rules. That being said, I wonder how high his ceiling is. I have not been a fan of J-Mac since he wound up on the team but I'm willing to give him another chance to prove himself.
I'm a big fan of stuckey and i know not a lot will agree with me hear but i see shades of Santana Moss back in his slot days with us. he didnt time amazingly at the combine but we all know theres a difference between game speed and a 40 yard stretch.. he has durability issue which i feel he can overcome. he has good size and is willing to go over the middle, he could be playing slot as soon as next year when mccareins is gone. As for Mccareins, he may last the year but dont rule out this as a ploy to create buzz so we can trade him during pre season which is becoming more common (we got bobby hamilton that way) but if we cant, i expect him to be our slot man for at least this year. i expect our wr depth chart to be as follows: 1.Coles 2.Cotchery 3.Mccareins 4.Smith 5.Stuckey if a 6th, i expect either wallace wright or frisman jackson. i dont expect dwight to make this team. he was brought in to be a slot guy/kr/pr. we have Miller who won the job last training camp at kr after he had his probowl year, revis will be taking over pr duties and if reports are true, mccareins will be our slot man for this year with stuckey and smith waiting in the wings. dwight has no place on this team
"Dave Hutchinson reports WR Justin McCareins has looked sharp in offseason workouts." This is always the case with McCareins. I reported two camps ago that McCareins looked absolutely awesome at TC that year. During practice, the guy runs perfect routes, gets great separation and makes every catch. Game-time is a whole other matter though. But don't take my word for it, go check it out for yourselves. Go to TC and see how he looks. You'll be impressed as hell. Then watch him on opening day. Major disappointment in my book.
i'd rather keep him then cut him...he is a very good number 3...now if someone wants to trade...then i'd be happy depending on the offer
McCareins has always been desperately in need of coaching. While I've always liked that he can put his body between the man and the ball and he's relatively good about going after tough passes, his problem has ALWAYS been that he was an athlete playing receiver. If the Jets can remedy -The precision of his routes -His body catching -His ability to adjust to the ball in the air He could end up being well worth the money. -X-
He has issues and takes up allot of cap for his performance but keep him until we get a better number three WR.
Guy has had injuries, injured QB's and Herm / Hacket holding him back... He's got talent - He needs it all to come together in a break out year.
Add to this: -The ability to make and keep separation until the ball arrives -The willingness to extend his body to make the "impossible" catch, and -The willingness to do that and take the hit that you know is coming Two years ago, at TC, I stayed late after the morning practice. This was the last year of Camp Marshmallow under Herm Edwards, the year in which NO ONE stayed later than they had to because there was no emphasis or reward placed on doing so. In fact, guys meandered off the field extra early in an attempt to get over to the Netherlands Chow Hall as quickly as possible, new rookie DeWayne Robertson included, who figured out that Herm wouldn't mind him helping himslef to a couple of extra helpings of fried chicken and mashed potatoes with extra gravy. But that's a whole other story... But at that camp that day, there was one guy who did stay late and practiced on his own with just a trainer. It was Justin McCareins out there (and it was about 102 degrees that day, I kid you not). He was practicing his "sideways catches," I call them. He'd run back and forth in front of the trainer, as if a target at a shooting gallery, and they practiced throwing the ball to him and him catching the ball sideways... catching on the left side, then turning around and catching on the right side. Apparently, he felt it was a weakness and he repeated this over and over again. The man has a terrific work ethic. So I reported all this, including him doing unbelievable windsprints at the end of the two-a-day, in which he reached the other end of the field repeatedly before anyone else. I was so impressed, I was beside myself. In practice, the guy was going to single-handedly take us to the SB that year. Then came the real games, and it was like I was looking at a different WR. Everything went out the window. This is probably the most typical example of a guy who practices really well and will impress the hell out of you, yet when it really counts, his percentages drop dramatically.
Look, I hope so, I really do. Maybe with the much-improved O-line and a better mix of offensive play-calling he'll do better. With Cotchery out there as someone they've got to cover and the threat of Thomas Jones or Baker out there, maybe he'll have that breakout year you're talking about. One can only hope, but I'll again watch him in TC and I'll let you know how great he still looks in practice. But we'll still have to wait until Game One.
we're so far under the cap though it won't matter if we keep him and he doesnt restructure. woody can spare the $
I would like to see him have a good year. If we can afford to keep him let's not make this a distraction too.
This goes right to the heart of the matter. We're not strapped for cap space, so Jmac's 2007 cap hit is a moot point. If we try to sign a starter before the season, then maybe Jmac has to restructure or get cut. I'm not a huge Jmac fan, but down the stretch in 2005 he made some really nice drive saving grabs. I'm good with him staying, and think the odd man out if he does stay should be Dwight. Revis will likely play nickle this year so we can use him to return punts, which was really the only thing keeping Dwight on this team. If Smith and Stuckey are fighting over the 4th spot on the depth chart, that says good things about our depth at WR. Funny thing is... We wouldn't even be having this conversation if Cotchery hadn't turned into a draft day steal.
