You said he was "a space/gap eating fat ass NT" and I simply was letting you know that he has never played that position before. And by the way I didn't use the word "excell" either, rather excel...
You may be right, but at 34, he really is only good for a year. Purely a stop-gap until next year's FA season or draft. So bring in ale until next the draft. Ouch!
I think he was let go after being given an entire season to get his fat ass arrested for DWI, spousal abuse, guns, stripper rape, ANYTHING but he just never got it done. Cinci is a small town and fans were beginning to talk that Sam just aint the bad ass they thought he was. He was even called a "mangini type of guy". That sealed his fate in Cinci.
Well, what the Jets need right now is a run-stopping stopgap to let the defense take the next step. Gotta stop the run or nothing else you do on defense matters all that much, 2006's madness aside.
I agree. We have had porosity over the last few years. A lot of teams have really embarassed us at times by running it up our gut.
Im pretty sure, unless hes a moron, he could manage to play NT in a 3-4, not exactly a highly complex position all things considered, especially with his size.
He's 350 pounds. He can play forever. It's not as if he'd be used in anything more than a rotational capacity, but when your job is to eat space and you have your own gravitational pull, you're worth a look. Throw this guy a one year deal. Absolutely. -X-
The really good NT's have both excellent anticipation of the play and a rapid read of which direction things are going. Because they're going to have 2 guys on them on the interior plays and they're going to need to tie up 2 on the plays off-tackle they have very little time to react. That's why a NT like D-Rob, who is quick but not highly reactive, is not ideal. In a 4-3 being quick and having some burst as your main strengths is a good thing because you are looking to hit a gap and make a play. In a 3-4 you're not looking for a gap, you're looking to maintain your position and move laterally with force instead of vertically. NT requires a lot more anticipation, balance and reaction than any other position on the field.
Again, your talking about really good NTs, nobodys saying hes a really good NT, just a stop gap fat ass who can eat blocks and let vilma and whoevers next to him do what they do best and make plays, otherwise hes gonna be invisible like this year. Ask zach thomas about what tim bowns and daryl gardener did for his career and now what keith traylor is doing for him. And you think NT requries more aniticipation, balance and reaction, then saftey/lb/or qb? Plz tell me your kidding....
You would think so, but after being in the league so long who knows if he is interested in learning a new position. Also coming off of a knee injury I wonder if he would be up for the rigors of a Mangini training camp. He may just be looking to grab another easy paycheck like the last old, fat guy we signed, Mr. Fatburger Mcglockton. I'm sure the FO will look into him and get the dirt on his attitude and desires....
haha mt chester, still cant belive he was falling asleep during team meetings at camp herm, would love to see what mangini would do if that happend. Yeah i mean who knows, im not saying lets go get him right away, im saying lets take a look, i mean he cant be any worse then what we'v got.
i'm sure our FO will look into it. i mean we got basketball players and wrestlers at minicamp for christ sake. one thing u gotta give our FO they leave no stone unturned.
big guy does NOT = great run stopper. sam adams is a gap-shooting, 3 technique type DT. totally useless against the run.
Didn't the Jets pass on him last year? Unless TannGini think he is one of the last pieces of the puzzle now.
There's never been a QB, LB or S who had to worry about whether he was going to have 600 lbs on him on the snap or have to go lunging to try and tie up that pulling G. NT is not at the center of the defense for nothing. A S can take a wrong first step and still recover, a NT has no hope in that situation.
at this point in his carreer he is useless... and yes he didn't play a good portion of last year because he was fat out of shape and had a bad knee... all in all a big no thanx
A qb has never had to worry about having 600 lbs on him...? So no qb in the history of the NFL was ever sacked/tackled by two 300lbers....? Im not saying it doesnt take talent, im saying prob the least complicated position on or O or D. Not many safteys can bite on a play fake and get back in position to play the pass, thats kinda why the play action works....
