Your not serious are you. You just not old enough to have seen John elway play. Lets see John elway took Denver three years to superbowl without a defense.(loses) Do you know how many come from behind victorys, he had in his career. How many superbowls have Denver made since Elway retired. J Elway one of the greatest Qb to ever play the game.

I agree 100%. Elway was the man, even if he did look like Mr. Ed.

    ORIGINAL
    REVISED

I tried making that a bit easier to read for everyone else. No reason to really do it, I just wanted to see how many mistakes I could correct.

Dude, the defense when they won the SB was top 5 in the league ('97) and top 12 (98).

How many did he win before he had Davis?

They had a top 2 running game in '98, and best overall in '97.

How many superbowls did Elway take his team to? I wasn't talking championship teams(more T davis teams than), but the Denver teams he carried to a superbowl. (albeit losses) he was basically a one man show. Im a Raider fan and Hate all Broncos ,but you have to give the man his due. John Elway without a doubt was one of the greatest Qbs that ever play the game. For you to say otherwise, I have to conclude you didn't start watching football till 1997.

86 - A team that played over their head. I'll give you that he lead them that year simply because the defense sucked and the running game was slightly worse than the passing game. He certainly wasn't anything special that year, with only 55% of his passes completed and a 19/13 TD:INT.

87 - Defense dominated the pass, running game got better.

89 - Running game was much better than the passing game, and the defense was one of the best in the league.

To me Elway is just another product of fans/media giving all the credit to the QB. He was very good, and he's actually my all time favorite QB...but he was inaccurate and INT prone also.

I'm not sure if you're overanalyzing or underanalyzing, but you're off. Elway was absolutely one of the very best QBs to ever play the game. And the pre-TD teams he took to the Super Bowl went there on his back. They had no business being in the playoffs without Elway at the helm, let alone the Super Bowl.

As for his stats, Reeves had a very simplistic offense. The Bronco players used to joke that their offensive philosophy was to get behind in the 4th quarter then ask Elway to bail them out at the end. And he did. Elway's stats really rose when the Broncos hired Jim Fassell, then Shanahan.

Do you plan on you know like...proving any of this?

Or should I just assume you know all this because you watched the game and the experts say so?

Elway was ripped for being a choker and all that crap before the Super Bowl victories. And one man does not equal a team, especially with Elways underwhelming overall performance. I realize in football the stats don't tell the story, but you're not offering anything on Elways 4th quarter prowess or any quotes (not that thats actual proof IMO but it helps) from teammates or SOMETHING. Saying he's undoubtedly one of the best does nothing.

    you missed a few.

You're not serious, are you? You're just not old enough to have seen John Elway play. Let's see: John Elway took Denver to the Super Bowl three times without a defense (all losses). Do you know how many come from behind victories he had in his career? How many Super Bowls has Denver made since Elway retired? John Elway was one of the greatest QBs to ever play the game.

I have to prove my opinion? Why don't you have to prove yours, especially when your opinion differs from conventional wisdom on the merits of Elway's career?

Yes he was called a "choker" by some before he won a Super Bowl. Same thing for Steve Young, Peyton Manning, and many others. Big deal. As for his credentials, this is all directly from his website:

    • 148 games won as a starting quarterback ? NFL Record
    • 47 game-winning or game-tying drives in the fourth quarter ? NFL Record
    • 5-time Super Bowl starting quarterback ? NFL Record
    • 50,000+ career passing yards and 3,000+ career rushing yards ? NFL Record
    • 7 consecutive seasons with 3000+ passing yards and 200+ rushing yards ? NFL Record
    • NFL Most Valuable Player ? 1987
    • Super Bowl Most Valuable Player ? Super Bowl XXXIII
    • 9-time Pro Bowl selection
    • 3-time All Pro selection

I can't believe I even went to his website but I wanted to try to give you some of the evidence you're asking for. Believe me, I hated Elway when he was playing, but had total respect for him and would have taken him on the Raiders in a heartbeat. He wasn't a first ballot Hall of Famer for nothing!

Presumably you don't like Dan Marino. Would you actually argue that he wasn't great?
