Just thinking about the season ahead (with optimism) and the thought occurs to me that Chad probably has 2007 and 2008 to get to the Jets to a Super Bowl, to keep his job going into 2009.

If he comes up short (whether by play or due to an injury), I'm guessing Mangini wipes the slate clean and starts Clemens (or somebody else).

Not only is it the right way to go, but if Eric's Mangenius starts to lose it's luster, it buys him another year.

Anyone disagree or see another scenario?

If Kellen is going to be our starter, I don't see him sitting for 3 full seasons. If that's what Mangini has planned, then this year is make or break for Chad. Either he's spectacular, leading the team DEEP into the playoffs, or there's a TC competition in '08, with the predetermined winner of KC

Clemens better get way better then he looked last year in mop up situations if he thinks he will ever get the job. Personally, I don't think he will ever be the full time Jets QB and i see them getting another next year, either through the draft, trade or FA.

I’d say Chad has the job for this year unless he struggles for some reason; however I believe he is in pretty good shape and know he has been rehabbing real hard this off-season.

If KC however is the future starter in Mangini’s eye, I don’t see him sitting next year. I’m sure being a competent coach though – Eric has read this board and learned that KC sucks and has neither talent nor the ability to be our starter. This comes from the same credible source whre I’ve learned over the years that Drew Breese Sucks, Philip Rivers is the next Ryan Leaf, Chad Pennington is a way better quarterback than Tom Brady. He better recognize…

    ??????

He barely took any snaps and threw ONE pass. Based on this you're saying he will never be a starter?

I have to agree with this. If Clemens is ever going to be a good starter for the Jets it will start this season or beginning of next.

Chad took forever to become starter of the Jets (remember the "we have no idea what we have here" period?) and he was installed 4 games into his 3rd season. When he came in it was not because Vinny was struggling, it was because the team was losing badly and needed a change.

I think if the Jets start 1-3 or 2-5 next season Chad will be out and Clemens will get his shot. Otherwise it will be the following TC after the Jets finish 8-8.

I THINK at some point this year clemens will get a start(s), either due to injury, out of playoffs, poor play - in that order.

if non of these occur then i look at 2008 being a strong possibility. Clemens wont sit for 3 years and basically blow out his first contract. the jets need to get a look and take it from there.

I really believe that if Chad didn't have the huge contract that Mangini would have gone a different direction last year. That would have kept us out of the playoffs and setup a completely different second season for his regime.

i dont think mangini will start out 3rd string qb over chad, maybe tuissopo will see a couple of snaps but that will also defeat the purpose of our superbowl aspirations.

I think you go into each year trying your best to win with who you have. Nobody is worried about 2009, that's a long way off. If and when Clemens gives us a better chance to win the next game, he will be in there.

Chad's our guy until proven otherwise......whether injury, bad play, KC beats him out in training camp, mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, etc

I am a believer that Chad is one of the better qb's in the league even with all of his weaknesses, and that says a lot about his Positives......haters of Chad need to look around the league and recognize that atleast half the teams in the league would love to have Chad as their signal caller......

Can he get us to the promise land? My answer is Yes, but he will not do it all on his shoulders.....Our team is much more talented than last year, and Chad is not rehabbing in the offseason for once, not to mention this is year 2 of the same exact system.......Thomas Jones will help out our QB a lot more than people think, especially Chad because he lives off the playaction

Can Kellen Clemens be better than Chad? Maybe, maybe not, but I have enough faith in Mangini and co. that they have a plan for all of this, and have a much better feel for how Kellen Clemens is developing.......For them to pass on Brady Quinn says a lot on how they feel about Kellen's development in a good way.......

My gut tells me that Chad will be our starter opening day this year, but it wouldn't suprise me at all if KC gets the nod.....I'd say that the battle will be a lot closer than some of you think.......60/40 Chad at this point

Dont forget, KC is wearing number 11 now. It seemed like 6 was just bad luck.

The guy was also running for his life in Buffalo, which is where he played the most. None of us really know how good / bad he is at this point.

Pennington sat for 3 years before he got a chance to play, and he came in as prepared to start as a first time starter could ever possibly be. So many teams are overeager to give the ball to the young guy these days, but I like the old way. The momentum Pennington gave the team when he first came in carried the team straight into the playoffs.

Put simply, in any situation, Id rather let a young quarterback learn on the bench than on the field, until its become obvious that the current starter can't cut it anymore. Pennington is playing great, theres no reason to rush him out the door, and Clemens still has a lot to learn im sure. Eventually hell get his chance, theres no reason to rush into anything.
