Is that right? I guess I never paid much attention at the time. All I ever heard was we gave up a #1.
He was really dangerous to us as GM, how dare he bring in talent and have successful drafts! banish him to bogey land!
Doug Jolley sucked in Oakland. He caught 32 passes his rookie season while Rich Gannon was setting the all time mark for completions with 418 (Jolley caught 7.5% of all the receptions Oakland had that season.) He caught 31 the 2nd season and then 29 and out the door. Jolley as Raiders TE: 90 catches, 972 yds, 5 tds All the other guys: 68 catches, 716 yds, 4 tds The Raiders got rid of him because their blocking TE's were just as effective in the passing game.
It's a common misconception that we traded a 1st rounder for Jolley since a 1st rounder was involved but we basically moved down about 20 spots and collected more picks which led to kerry Rhodes- that alone makde it a great tarde the e gotthe 2 players we were targeting anyway Justin Miller and Mike Nugent plus gota solid backup RB in Houston.
He was a rookie in 2002 where oakland had a another TE they used PLUS 3 very good WRs thye used. 32 for 409 and 2 Tds is pretty goodwhen you take it all into account and that is why oakland ws so high on him at that point.
They weren't high on him after that 1st season. They drafted ANOTHER TE in the 2nd round (Teyo Johnson) the season right after they drafted Jolley. And they began de-emphasizing him in the offense. He made no strides from season 1 to season 2 because Oakland had already decided he was lacking and they were looking elsewhere. By season 3 the Raiders were actively trying to trade him (Jolley rumors started in TC 2004 and continued right up to the moment that Al Davis found his sucker in 2005.)
Considering we took a kicker a bust CB a bust NT with our first 3 picks, hard to argue that we needed to trade down to get Rhodes. We gave up so much value at the front end of that draft we could have picked Rhodes with our 3rd if they loved him and taken Poha with a later pick he probably would have been around through at least the 5th round of that draft. We certainly could have taken a guard or a RT early in that draft along with Rhodes without the Jolley trade.
Teyo Johnson entred the NFL as a WR and was converted into a TE. The raiders were very high on Nolley after year 1. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2003/draft/players/9713.html Sucker? who was the scker? we got Nugent, Houston, Jolley and Rhodes from that deal while Oakland got fabian Washington and Kevin McMahon.
If it's "value" the Jets are looking than Olsen would be the best pick. The TE class is horrible in terms of depth. You have Olsen at the top, then a notch below him there's Miller. After that, there is a severe drop off, more severe than any other position in this draft. If the Jets come into this draft with TE being one of the position they wish to address, it would make perfect sense in terms of "value" to pick Olsen at 25. There will still be quality offensive linemen, defensive linemen and corners when they pick again. However, by that time Miller will be gone and they would have to pick from a far lesser group of TEs talent wise. The problem is no one really knows what the Jets are looking for. We really do not have any glaring needs like we did last year. We all have players on the roster we want replaced but haven't a clue how the coaching staff and FO feel about these players. I personally hate Brandon Moore but I not too blinded by hate to not realize that he is one of our better run blockers.
Miller has not been a bust, he is developing and has been ok at times and is a GREAT return man, Pouha was not a bust he was hurt all of last year. We could have picked Rhodes w/ our 1st pick so could any other team but we didn't and no one else did so we traded to move up in rd 5 and we landed Rhodes.
Pouha sucked year 1 and was injured all last year and he was not going in the third round when we took him. So we have gotten nothing out of him and he is also 27 now. How do you know we needed to move up to get Rhodes?
He was drafted to be a tight end, specifically a pass-catching tight end. He never played a down for the Raiders at any other position and his draft profile (the one you linked) specifically mentions him as a likely tight end.
I guess that you're willing to overlook needs like: 1) Starting CB 2) True NT 3) RG/RT 4) OLB 5) A true #1 burner WR You're right, we're fine, nothing's glaring. Let's just pretend that everything I mentioned above is "Fluff" and go for the luxary pick.
He was a WR in the draft, they didnt draft him to replace Jolley they drafted him to add to a receiving corp whether that was at TE or WR b/c they were getting very old at receiver. he was a project when they drafted him. http://www.footballguys.com/03pod_dougjolley.htm
I see nothing in the link to alter anything I have said previously in this thread. The fact that Teyo Johnson is mentioned with the tight ends not the wide receivers and that he is mentioned as being primarily a receiver (not wide receiver, receiver) just further indicts Jolley as already failing at the role he was drafted to fill which was as a receiver. BTW, Oakland traded Jolley because there's only room for so many one-dimensional receivers at tight end on a roster and they concluded that Teyo Johnson was the better fit for that role.
Where are the articles saying Jolley was bad as a rookie and that's why oakland drafted a project to convert to TE?
