I would never say never on trading him (or any other player for that matter), it all depends on the offer. If some team is stupid enough to offer us a Hershel Walker type trade, we'd be foolish not to accept it. That said, if we don't get a kings ransom for him, I'd rather keep him.
I'm thinking that draft day trades are generally draft pick for draft pick because that removes the "failed the physical" problem that arrives when the trade cannot be reversed because the pick has been exercised. If the Jets are going to trade Vilma on draft day we'll probably get wind of it beforehand as he'll need to have a physical by the acquiring team in the days leading up to the draft. This is particularly true because of his knee, which while silent since he came into the NFL was a big concern at Miami and pre-draft in 2004. Would I trade Vilma on draft day? Yes. What would I need to get to make that trade? A shot at Alan Branch or Patrick Willis.
In a word: No. In two: Heck no. In three: Are you kidding? In seven: No. No. No. No. No. Seventh Word.
I think any answer other than "maybe" makes no sense - I would maybe trade pretty much anyone on the team, although for some players the price would probably be higher than another team would be willing to pay. As you say, for all of Vilma's abilities, he is hardly the perfect player in their current scheme, so you'd have to be crazy to not be willing to listen to any offers that come around. Having said that, I personally will be surprised if he actually is traded, but that wasn't the question.
i wouldnt trade vilma unless we get a very good offer like a mid 1st and a 2nd that wont happen... i rather stick to what we got... a very good LB that is still young and can be a all pro caliber player
then what do you make of the 'Skins possibly trading their #6 for Briggs. i guess it's been discussed pre-draft, like you mention a player-for-pick would; but then would they give Briggs the physical before the draft? if that works, i'd definitely consider trading Vilma straight-up for a mid-1st pick. as good as Willis looks, i don't know if i'd want to trade Vilma with the intention of using the acquired pick for another ILB; that almost seems like a waste because you may as well keep Vilma and his potential to see if he pans out -- that's what you'd be doing if you drafted another LB who hasn't played our 3-4 either. i'd rather use the acquired pick for a skill position on someone who'll come in and make an immediate impact, who we know for sure would fit in the system (be it Offense or Defense). cheers
This topic keeps getting brought up and beat to death... The chances of Vilma traded anywhere this year are slim ot none... Common... I mean, come on!!! Can't believe he is so hated here
It's borderline ridiculous at this point. The guy is a hell of a football player. People think it's as simple as Madden to replace a player with Vilma's intangibles. -X-
He had a solid season....not great like his years in the 4-3, but very solid.......he will only improve as we improve our d-line, and he gets comfortable in the 3-4.......he had some good games down the stretch, and I expect his game to improve drastically next season.....in fact, I expect our whole d to take a huge step.......I WOULD trade him if the right oppurtunity came along, but the grass is not always greener on the other side, and Mangini's system seems like the type that needs continuity to reach it's potential
A leader needs to stay IMO ...Give him a shot this year ...Everything takes alittle getting used too.
Speed isnt Vilmas problem, its his size thats the problem in the 3-4. Hopefully, he has added 5-10 lbs this offseason and he will be stronger at the point of attack. I still cannot get over the missed sack in the New England playoff game. If he makes that play, that is a completely different game. That play just kills me.
incidentally, that play had nothing to do with his speed or size; he was there and just inexplicably whiffed. it definitely seemed like a cerebral thing -- maybe if he had Barton's mentality he would have just ran through Brady and perhaps caused a fumble that way. back on topic. i think Vilma deserves more time to learn and adjust to this scheme. but you have to at least listen and consider any offers that may give the Jets more picks, both this year and next. cheers
I just think it's funny how you'd in effect trade Vilma in order to pick a lesser Linebacker that's an even worse fit in a 3-4.
I'm guessing that if Briggs goes for the 6 it would either be with a physical beforehand or with Washington waiving the physical entirely and assuming all the risk. Most NFL teams would not trade for a player unconditionally, however Washington is a case study in risk-taking, generally poor, management.
The missed sack was almost as though Vilma was afraid to take a penalty and gave it a half-hearted swipe as he ran by Brady.
