    Predraft news conference

The Jets’ NFL Draft is now within 10 days. The club’s area scouts are back in town, congregating daily at Weeb Ewbank Hall with members of the pro personnel department and the coaching staff from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum will escape the meetings Thursday morning for an 11 a.m. predraft news conference, which will air live on newyorkjets.com.

Tannenbaum, now in his 11th season with the Jets and second as general manager, has had a busy off-season shaping the roster. The Jets released a few veterans, including QB Patrick Ramsey, RBs Kevan Barlow and Derrick Blaylock and OL Trey Teague. They also re-signed DL Bobby Hamilton, O-linemen Anthony Clement and Wade Smith and CB Hank Poteat and extended the contract of emerging WR Jerricho Cotchery.

of the draft, and the teams that can go in there having as many needs filled as possible leaves you the most flexibility,” Tannenbaum told reporters following the trade for Jones. “That's what we're working toward. We still have those four first-day picks, which was important, and we've added a good piece to the puzzle.”

The Bears’ price for Jones was a swap of second-round selections with the Green & White — the 37th overall selection in exchange for the 63rd selection. The Jets hold six selections: Round 1 (No. 25 overall), Round 2 (Nos. 59 and 63), Round 3 (No. 89), Round 5 (No. 164) and Round 6 (No. 177).

“Our core philosophy is to build a team through the draft and try to re-sign as many of our own players as we can to coach them, develop them and help them get better,” Tannenbaum said in January.

In free agency, the Green & White addressed the front seven with the acquisitions of defensive ends Michael Haynes and Kenyon Coleman followed by the signing of Andre Wadsworth, the third overall selection in the 1998 draft.

An early March trade for RB Thomas Jones brought the Jets a back who averaged 1,272 yards on the ground the past two seasons. With Jones in the fold, the Jets went out and grabbed Darian Barnes — the big blocking fullback filled a roster void after B.J. Askew departed in free agency.

The plan for the team was simple: Fill needs prior to the draft, so Tannenbaum has flexibility come draft weekend.

“We were hoping to have our roster set as much as possible heading into the draft because I've always studied the result of the draft, and the teams that can go in there having as many needs filled as possible leaves you the most flexibility,” Tannenbaum told reporters following the trade for Jones. “That's what we're working toward. We still have those four first-day picks, which was important, and we've added a good piece to the puzzle.”

ok, here's what they said: they are trading both Vilma and DRob, but keeping McCareins..... ok, that's just not funny. They didn't say much.

    I missed it...

    I missed the news conference.
Can someone briefed those that missed it?

    I can pretty much guess,
"We want smart, selfless people that football is importrant to them."
    or
" We may trade up, trade back or stay put."

I just hope Tan said something worth hearing.

Cimini posted a blog at nydailynews.com....this gives a good summary of the presser:

Tannenbaum: Jets 'Don't Have Any Glaring Needs'
Some quick thoughts and observations from this morning’s pre-draft news conference at Weeb Ewbank Hall:

-- Interestingly, coach Eric Mangini didn’t appear at the presser. GM Mike Tannenbaum was joined by director of college scouting Joey Clinkscales and personnel director Terry Bradway, Tannenbaum’s predecessor. Bradway still has a key role in the draft process; he runs the draft meetings.

-- Tannenbaum kept touting the fact that 21 of 22 starters are back, as if to say, “We don’t have any glaring needs.” Uh, how ‘bout cornerback?

-- Predictably, their answers were vague and provided little or no insight into what they might do with their first-round pick (25th overall). Clinkscales did note that the draft is especially deep at wide receiver and defensive back. Does that qualify as a nugget?

-- Tannenbaum shot down a report in today’s Nashville City Paper, which quotes Justin McCareins’ agent, Cliff Brady, as saying that he’s shopping the league in an attempt to broker a trade for his client. Tannenbaum claimed that McCareins has not been granted permission to speak with other teams, adding that he plans to call the agent to clarify the situation. Tannenbaum did little, however, to shoot down speculation that McCareins will be traded. Make no mistake, the Jets are trying to deal him.

-- Asked about the trade rumors involving LB Jonathan Vilma, Tannenbaum said, “We expect Jon to be here.” But he didn’t issue an iron-clad statement, refuting the rumors. Asked if Vilma is “untouchable,” Tannenbaum said, “I wouldn’t use that term for any player we have.”

-- Clinkscales fielded some questions about individual players. Naturally, we asked him about the top cornerbacks. I got the distinct impression they really like Pitt’s Darrelle Revis. Then again, who doesn’t? He called Texas’ Aaron Ross a “talented athlete,” noting his exceptional punt-returning ability. But he also said Ross has “less playing experience” as a one-year starter. Clinkscales gave a glowing report on Arkansas’ Chris Houston, who very well could be available at No. 25. From talking to scouts, I’ve heard a wide range of opinions on Houston. He’s an amazing athlete, but his lack of production raises some questions.

-- Clinkscales gave a lukewarm evaluation of Penn State LB Paul Posluszny, saying he runs only “fairly well.” He downplayed the size factor, saying the 6-1?, 238-pound linebacker could play in the Jets’ system, but he didn’t sound very convincing.

-- Tannenbaum, who came prepared with a few one-liners, offered the funniest remark of the session. Asked about the Jets’ success with fourth-round picks (see Jerricho Cotchery, Kerry Rhodes, Leon Washington, et al), Tannenbaum joked that they will pass on their third-round pick (89th overall) and submit their selection card early the next morning before the fourth round starts. As of now, the Jets don’t have any fourth-round picks.

And here, the blog from Tom Rock at Newsday on the draft presser. Some other interesting angles to consider....

    Yada, Yada, Yada
    By Tom Rock

From the tone of today’s pre-draft press conference with three Jets decision makers, the guy they are highest on might actually be Larry David. The “Seinfeld” creator, Jets fan and sometimes contributor to the Green Think Tank (solicited or otherwise) was mentioned just as often as cornerbacks Darrell Revis, Aaron Ross and Chris Houston, some of the players the Jets could take with a first-round pick.

In talking about the prospects with poker-faced solemnity, I couldn’t help but think that the Jets had taken David’s advice to heart: Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Interestingly, the player who drew the most visceral response from Joey Clinkscales, director of college scouting, came in regard to tight end Greg Olsen from Miami. It interesting because tight end would not appear to be a need for the Jets (Chris Baker had a pretty solid 2006 season). But Clinkscales said Olsen is in the mold of other vertical threats from Miami like Winslow and Shockey. “Can he fit? He would fit into a lot of programs,” Clinkscales said. The one knock against Olsen is his blocking. “He can block,” said Clinkscales with a less-than-convincing grin.

As of this moment, the Jets have the 25th pick in the 1st round), 27th and 31st in the 2nd round, and 26th in the third for a total of four Day One selections. They won’t pick on Day Two until the 27th selection of Round Five and then have their last scheduled pick as the third in the 6th round. GM Mike Tannenbaum said he is pleased with the flexibility the Jets have heading into next Saturday, giving them the ability to trade up, trade back, or stand still. He also admitted that picking so late in the first round leads to a lot of hypothetical conversations and speculative deals, but any possible deals will not really take shape until the wheels start spinning at noon next Saturday. Terry Bradway said there are 18 to 20 guys the Jets would feel comfortable picking with the 25th selection.

It was interesting to learn how the Jets interview their prospects (there are, according to Terry Bradway, around 380 players the Jets consider “draftable”). Bradway said Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini often ask the questions that probe into a player’s personal and intellectual depth (what book did you last read? what music do you listen to?). The real glimpses, Bradway said, come when they sit down to watch film with a player and ask him not to evaluate his performance but to talk about a teammate or a guy across the line. That, he said, shows how a player thinks and analyzes.

The only other tidbits that were interesting came from comments on current Jets players. Tannenbaum dismissed trade rumors regarding Jonathan Vilma, but would not go so far as to call him “untouchable.” He said if a team came in with a tremendous offer for Vilma, they would listen. But Tannenbaum was clear that refraining from the word “untouchable” is more philosophical than practical. It’s akin to Mangini not naming Pennington the starter for 2007 at the end of 2006, something the coach later did anyway.

Tannenbaum said he has not given permission for Justin McCareins to seek a trade from other teams. That was in response to an item in a Nashville paper that quoted McCareins’ agent as saying he had been talking to several teams. Even so, it’s pretty clear McCareins is on the way out and he could be heading for his old team, the receiver-hungry Titans. Tennessee has the 19th pick in the first round, so if the Jets feel that their player of choice might not be available at 25, they might put together a package for the Titans.

I side more with Tannenbaum on that. I don't see cornerback as the biggest need on the team. I think it's a position we should be looking to upgrade, but we should also still be looking to upgrade O-Line, D-Line, TE, and even WR. I don't think there is one position that we absolutely have to upgrade no matter what.

A point I picked up on twice was that they would like a CB that can also PR. Can either Ross or Revis do that job?
