I would trade Vilma on draft day if I could get a 1st or 2nd rounder or multiple early round picks (2nd & 4th; 1st & 4th; 2nd & 3rd ). Though Vilma is a good player, he isn't a great player & doesn't have speed to be a great player. Whats he lacks can't be taught or bought !!! With the early pick, Jets' can get Lawrence Timmons & Blaylock. :up: Jets' can then put Hobson in the middle where he belongs with Barton. Jets' can easily replace Vilma....IMO. If he is missing, I don't think Jets' miss a beat. :up:
I would not mind giving him one more shot this year, but if he has another subpar year he will be of less value the following year. I give him away for a pair of seconds. The though of four 2nd rounders would be sweet.
I think he will have a rebound season in 2007...I was very worried about him in the 3-4 his first year, but for some reason I feel like he is going to make some plays for the Jets. So the answer is no...we shouldn't trade the QB of the defense.
I think you're trading away the heart of the D if you trade Vilma. Having Von Oelhoffen be less effective than a traffic cone and Roberton very inconsistent throughout the season (got better towards the end) did not help him at all last season. however, with a hopefully solid D-line next year, he'll be free to roam and be the playmaker he was in the 4-3 because he won't have to take on O-lineman 1-on-1 like he did last season (which is supposed to be the D-line's job).
This is a good point...I think a defensive line with Kenyon Coleman starting over Von Olehoffen is going to help Vilma as well.
I think that middle/inside linebacker is very far down on the list of positions I am concerned about right now. He's athletically gifted, he's smart, he's a worker. Don't worry about Jonathan Vilma.
Agree completely, Vilma is our leader back there and he will be pissed he had a poor season by his standards. I expect to come back big time this year in what will be a settled system.
Maybe. You don't trade him for anything someone throws at you. But if someone offers a great package, I would definitely do it. I wouldn't trade him for a 6th round pick and a gaterade cooler. But if you can fleece a moronic franchise like Washington, and get a bunch of draft picks and maybe a player, absolutely. I think they would be foolish not too.

guys start the most ridiculous threads sometimes, have you not seen who were really the garbage LB's of last year? and if you didnt watch some more game film. vilma did his best, he needs help he cant do everything on his own.
I don't believe this is the appropriate time to trade an emotional leader like Vilma. He improved drastically as the year went along, and it's way too early to conclude that he wont work in the 3-4
Not this year , no. If he doesn't get a hold of the 3-4 by '07 end , then yes trade him , unless we revert back to 4-3 , personally I think he will adapt , hes a good athlete with an even better brain. As has already been said the D line should be done , if not certainly after the draft and this will help alot.
Vilma is less valuable to a 3/4 than he is in a 4/3. The answer is if we can get he's value as if he was a 4/3LB you absolutely do it.
Under no circumstances do you trade Vilma. He is the defensive leader of the team and the emotional core. No one works hard than Jon. Build the right cast around him and see what happens.
Exactly. The guy is 230 lbs, and gifted, but needs to be out in space, not up around the LoS. If we could package him, and 25 to get up in the draft (though that only gets you to 4...) and get a premier player while turning two first round salaries into one, that would not be a bad thing.
What about the great coverage that Vilma provides that allows the rest of our front 7 to throw ccreative blitzes at the opposition? Or how he's basically the QB of our entire D? There is more to being an LB than just stopping the run. Vilma might be average in the 3-4 against the run, but he is exceptional in many other areas including pass coverage, reads, instincts and running down plays to the outside/flats.
Vilma didn't have the ESPN highlight plays, but his 100 plus tackles were the invisible core of the defense. The missed tackles that would come if Vilma is not there would not be so invisible. Put a decent line in front of Vilma, and you'll see how great he is.
Good big inside LB in the 3/4 don't miss tackles, bad ones do. Great 4/3 LB in a 3/4 bring less to the table than good 3/4 LB do because they don't need to move that fast they just need to fill the hole and make the tackle. Vilma's best asset, he's pursuit is a liability in the 3/4.
