Great post, and I've been saying this since the day Miller was drafted. This past TC(I was there for about 4 days) Miller was arguably the best player on our D. He was tight in coverage, flew to the ball, and just brought an extra element. I truly believe it's only a matter of time till that translates to gameday.
mod, eh? But I agree. There were suggestions that Miller had taken to Mangini's coaching late in the year - asking good questions, studying his books. I think we can make judgements on him AFTER this year, but not before. He's got the natural tools, let's see what Mangini can do with him.
I think Miller is just the latest in a long line of Bradway picks, particularly on defense in the secondary, that did not pan out after the "raw talent" hit the NFL. 2001 - Jamie Henderson (bad luck, but he wasn't beating out the aging CB's on the Jets before that) 2002 - Jon McGraw (injury problems in college beforehand and injury problems on the Jets) 2003 - Derek Pagel (what? brainfart, most boards had him an undrafted FA) 2004 - Derrick Strait (too slow as all the world knew after the combine) 2004 - Erik Coleman (a good pick amidst the trash) 2005 - Justin Miller (would have been nice if one of the corners that Bradway drafted early was ready to go) 2005 - Kerry Rhodes (Bradway's best pick was one of his last) Now throw in the other prominent talent instead of production picks that Bradway made at various points and you get a very frustrating pattern that was kind of guaranteed to drive the Jets into the ground at some point. 2002 - Bryan Thomas 2003 - Dewayne Robertson, BJ Askew (projected not to have a job in the NFL because he wasn't going to stay a tailback and he wasn't going to transition well to FB)
Agreed. Also, all the Jets fans at the draft booed when we took Nugent as they were all chanting Justin Miller. Hmmm...that was a strange draft.
we were speakingly soley on miller, but the list is pretty interesting.... henderson had talent, but bad luck did up-end him....i liked mcgraw, i forget what round we took him in, a pretty good back up guy and spot starter, but not a game breaker at all. pagel....im sure hed like a mulligan on that one. hindsight is so much clearer though. :grin: coleman and rhodes were good picks, and miller may still pan out. we know hes getting the coaching he needs, but he really needs to show progress this season to make him a good pick. hes had far too many PI calls for a backup or a starter. he has given extra downs more than any other defender on the squad. that needs to change quickly. thomas has shown he has the talent, and fits this system far better than herms 4-3/cover 2. he has shown flashes of what made him good in college. i think out of that list of bradway picks (minus rhodes) BT has shown the greatest progress as a player out of that lot. i think we can agree on that. as for D-Slob....i never wanted to draft him, and thought the FO was insane for giving up 2 round 1 picks for this guy. when he had fergie on his hip he had a good season, and they made a good tandem. hes def one of those players that benefits from having above avg linemates. it will be interesting to see what they do and how they use him this season. he may be a better fit for DE in manginis system...who knows.... the thing is, i dont think we can blame a players lack of progression based on the GM that made the pick. after he gets on the field, the only guy that has control over what gets done is the player. the FO can make informed choices, and you hope they choose well....but holding a grudge due to who took them is silly, nonsensical and pretty flat out ridiculous.
Justin Miller can hit but he cant tackle. If he has you lined up, he can run straight at you and make huge, crushing hits. If you have the ball in space, Miller cant tackle anyone. There is a big difference between hitting and tackling.
It'd be so nice if he managed to get some technique down on the tackling because I agree he's a hard hitter when he doesn't miss.
yup, because no productive corner in the NFL was ever scored on in college. I'm not saying JM will ever be great, but this clip sure as heck doesn't say he won't.
So one play indicates that we need a cornerback? Corner is one of the more irrelevant positions in a 3-4 ZONE defense. We need a 3rd/4th round pick, maybe. But other then that we have two legit starters with Barrett and Dyson, plus Coleman and Miller who still have potential and Poteat to man the nickel. Not to mention he doesn't get owned, he gets outjumped by one of the most physically dominating receivers to ever play college football.
did you catch any of the 16 regular season games? it isnt 1 play with miller....he had double digit PI calls this season....thats far too many for one player. its not about a play, its about the way he plays.
this can work both ways: Miller also guarded Steve Smith stride-for-stride when we played the Panthers. Steve Smith is one of the best WR's in the NFL; does that mean Justin Miller is one of the best CB's in football? no. but it shows he has potential, and to write him off now is foolish. i can understand the demand for more, to see his play improve and decrease penalties. but how about some patience? it's not like he's a top 15 pick on the verge of busting. give the guy some time to develop. (by the way, anyone know how to obtain the PI calls on Miller, as well as other CB's in the league last year?) cheers
O yah justin miller stinks becuase a physical freak, with an insane vertical out jumped him. Right. Had you shown sinorice moss doing that or some regular reciever maybe, but calvin Johnson ? Who is going to get double teamed from the minute he steps on a field ?
no offense, and i know thats a ridiculous way to spend your first 2 picks in a draft...but that kicker and kick returner each had a pretty big impact on our team this year...Miller constantly put us in good field position and Nugent kicked field goals like no other...
And we got to the second round of the AFC playoffs in 04 on the Punt return of Moss and an interception by Tongue.
That also does not mean because he's been struggling, that we need a corner. He's really our fourth corner right now.
Not to mention fumbling the negotiations with Randy Thomas and Kareem McKenzie until somebody else set the market for them. The trade-ups for Santana Moss and D-Rob. The banishment of Aaron Glenn and James Farrior in favor of Aaron Beasley and Sam Cowart. The huge contracts for Martin, Mawae and Pennington and the over-market contract for Chrebet. The drafting of Bryan Thomas in the first round. There are a lot of reasons that Bradway and Herm got kicked because the list above is not remotely complete, it's just off the top of my head.
