speaking of the TE one interesting stat I found last night was that Pennington is near the bottom in QB rating in 2 WR sets but near the top in 3 and 4 WR sets. I like Chris Baker, but the way I read this stat was that without a legitimate TE Receiving threat we are not getting it done. Getting a TE that can occupy the middle of the field will give us better play calling options on 1st down IMO

 

But its not baker fault. chad doesn't throw to the TE much. bakers usually makes the plays when given a opportunity too.

 

I disagree, We still need a legit NG, Drob is fine as part of a rotation but he is not a run stuffer!

I like the idea of getting Offensive help but I feel that we still have CB and NG needs on D.

 

I think he's also kept in to help in pass protection a lot.

 

Baker is a nice player, but I would prefer to see another athlete out there, whether it be at the tight end spot or in the slot. I'm a little upset that they choose to use Brad Smith in a gimmicky way. I think with a year under his belt, he might emerge as a legitimate deep threat.

I agree, I'd love Johnson and make every effort.... HOWEVER

The Jets had the opportunity to get a rare player last year, Reggie Bush, and didn't go after him too hard. (deemed the price too high)

 

If D. Bowe or R. Meacham is still around when we pick, I think we have to grab them. I love Coles but he is always banged up and who knows if he will even be with the team next year. Brad Smith may never amount to more than a #3 receiver/gadget player, T. Dwight is too old and fragile and JMac is hopefully on his way out. Chad needs more weapons and I don't thinks there is any TE's worth taking in the first round (Olsen will be gone by the time we pick) plus with our luck I don't think taking a TE in the first round is a good idea. My ideal draft would be:

1. WR Dwayne Bowe or Robert Meacham
2a. CB Eric Wright or Marcus McCauley
2b. OG Josh Beekman or Manuel Ramirez
3. NT Brandon Mebane or Marcus Thomas

I think this would fill all our holes. Please give feedback.

Or Meachem if he is there at 25....

Getting Olsen still leaves us with 8 down inside on Runs...
At that point, Blalock nat 25 , and say...Mike Walker with our first pick in the bottom of the second round, gives us a better look offensively....And that would also open up the middle for Baker, who can catch ,and runs pretty well afterward...

 

However, JI2K4, you have to put that in context as well....Going up for Bush, would have cost you your franchise Left Tackle, and Starting center for the next 6 -10 years...

Sheeze, can we stop all this talk about trading up for Calvin Johnson. Yes he is a playmaker and the best WR in the draft, but it's a pipe dream to think we can land him w/o drastically overpaying. At least be realistic and consider someone like Bowe or Meachem...

 

This is highly unfortunate. I've always liked Coles. He's probably one of the toughest SOB's in the league. I suppose this is the kind of thing that happens when you start your career playing for Sperm and Spurrier. Both of those guys ran pansy ass training camps.

I think making a trade for Calvin Johnson would be out of the question. The Jets need to address too many positions at this point. I would prefer adding quality and depth on the offense. I believe it's absolutely necessary that we address TE, WR, OL and CB as soon as possible.

Wouldn't the fact that he was there for the first day of voluntary work-outs kind of quash the whole thing? Coles was treated unfairly last year. Not by the team, not by the league, but by the football gods. I counted three times in the last 4 or 5 games where he got absolutely nailed helmet to helmet. Coles is a warrior.

 

Huh? So someone speculated Coles might skip it and demand a trade, but instead he showed up and worked hard and that's a knock on him?????

 

Drafting Calvin Johnson, (WR) and putting his speed on the outside, makes TE, and OL better as well...

from 25 (720) you'd have to package the better of our 2nd rounders, and a premier player(Vilma, BThomas) to get up to around #4.

IF its Vilma, the deal also makes sense from a cap standpoint. (Keep in mind we have also brought in a ton of front 7 players for this camp...)

 

Blalock would have a bigger impact on our offense than CJ at this point IMO and would cost a hell of a lot less. I think CJ is an amazing talent but when you consider price to get him, the need to upgrade the right side of our O-line, and the upside of having 3 young studs on the oline when you look at the future, I think it's a no brainer.

 

I personally wouldn't go up for CJ, even though he's a great player. We'd have to give up way too much, and we still have a lot of holes. I love Chad, but I'm not sure he's the quarterback to exploit CJ's talents anyway.

Now you could argue Clemens is the QB of the future (great chance in '08 to take the reigns) and he would be able to grow in the system with CJ, but Schottenheimer's system is more predicated on motion and confusion than sitting back and waiting for the home run. I'd see the addition of Olsen more consistent with the SD-KC offensive scheme. And there's a chance he'd be available late in the first round.

 

Forget Calvin Johnson, that is a pipe dream. He will be the first pick of the draft, as he should.

As for the rest, I agree completely, if either Bowe or Meachum are available, we have to take one of them. I have even become warm to the idea of Olsen if he is available and the Wrs are gone. Either way, two picks have to go to the O on the first day. Olsen would be the only TE worth a first day pick IMO..

 

what price? you can still draft OG, OT in rounds 2-7, plus FA.

Besides, the biggest problem we have on offense right now is 8 in the box.

you draft CJ, and play from a 3 wide set, Thomas Jones will look like Barry Sanders, because CJ,JC,and LC will command at least 4 defenders, With a 5th looking to backpedal at the snap.

Coles, when not double covered can light up a defense.

Johnson Not double covered is a home run threat...

So no matter what you do with your safeties, you're f'd. and that leaves Cotchery in the slot, a LB on baker, and more lattitude in the running game.
