First, I think CJ is going to the Raiders so this all moot, but.....

From a draft pick standpoint we do not have the ammunition to get to #2 and get him. However, we do have the ammunition with trading Vilma and Coles. This has already been heavily rumored (and I think has some validity) that the Jets could do something like 1.25, Vilma, Coles and maybe something a little more (like one of our seconds for their high third) for the #2 spot. Vilma and Coles provide the value to get there.

As much as people hate this trade it actually would make sense for both teams.

If the Jets trade Vilma they lose an impact player, but one that will always struggle in the 3-4. We could look at someone like Brandon Siler or possibly Buster Davis in the late second as a replacement. The Detroit Lions desparately need help at ILB and VIlma would present an all-pro presence to their team, something he may never do again with the Jets. Also consider that Vilma will likely walk in 2 years for a 4-3 defense, so getting value for him now makes some sense.

The Jets lose Coles. Coles would be an awesome slot receiver in the Martz offense and a player that Martz would covet. The Jets would replace Coles with Calvin Johnson. Calvin is a big upgrade over Coles in potential, but there is always a risk, but on paper CJ would be a big upgrade for the Jets receiving corps, and Coles is not 100% happy here.

We lose a first round pick, but we get Calvin Johnson.

With pick 25, Detroit could still upgrade their offensive line, or shore up their defense more. Detroit would turn the #2 into 3 impact players. That is a good trade for Detroit.

We would essentially be trading Coles and Vilma for Calvin Johnson. With Coles attitude and injury concerns as #1 reciever, and the fact Vilma will probably be gone in 2 years anyway and never be the same player in a 3-4, this is a good trade for the Jets. They would come away with the best player in the current draft and one of the best WR prospects ever.

If this option is open to the Jets they have to look at it hard.

That deal could only be described as "cashing in" on capital the team has built over years of wise management. That capital does not exist right now. Not gonna happen.

Hell no do we trade the leader of our defense, our first rounder, and our #1 PROVEN WR for a high potential rookie. No way!

Absurd, ask for a shovel in the deal, that way you can bury team with this worthless trade. Vilma guarantees 100 tackles, Coles guarantees 90 + receptions, Prospect CJ guarantees potential that?s it,(and a hefty contract). Also why would you put so much emphasis on that position, did you forget our QB is PENNY? eventually he will struggle throwing again and you?ll be ready to run both of them off the field. Give Vilma another year or two, he works hard and sooner than later he will mingle with the team?s 3-4 and BOOM we have our star back.

We already have two really good wr's...this would mean that cotchery would become a third wr again...this just after he was just signed to a long term deal.

Our needs in the draft are cb, and both lines. Outside of that we are just providind depth.

Two proven stars and a first round pick for a coveted prospect? Will everyone PLEASE stop with the Vilma trade talk and there will be blood if Laveranues Coles isn't in green and white next year.

This move by the Jets would top the list of dumb moves made by this franchise and Tannenbaum is not dumb. This would be ridiculously stupid because:

The Jets would be trading two proven veteran pro bowl caliber players. Yes Coles is no longer a young player, but it has been shown that he and Pennington have great chemistry. He is a 1200 yard 5-7 Td a year WR with Pennington. What is wrong with that? Why get rid of Coles? As for Vilma - I'm sorry but good football players are good football players no matter the system and you don't give up on a talented young player before he adjusts to a new system. Besides, the reason Vilma did not have an impact year has everything to do with the failings of the defensive line and not with him.

CJ is unproven. You just don't trade proven commodities for potential, especially in the NFL.

First round WRs are unpredictable. How many early first round WR busts do I have to mention before this point is proven? Think Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, Donte Stallworth. David Terrell, Koren Robinson, Peter Warrick, Travis Taylor..... the list goes on and on.

If CJ doesn't pan out, the Jets are set back YEARS.

The Jets have needs, and WR is not one of them. The Jets need DL help at end and NT, they need guards, they need a RT, and they need a CB. The one position where the Jets have quality and depth besides safety is WR. The Jets have Coles, an emerging star in Cotchery, Smith, McCareins, and Dwight. I can see drafting a WR in round 4 or 5, but to use the #2 pick???? Stupid!!

Even if CJ pans out in the NFL, which is about 30-50% chance, it will take him three years to develop. Look at NFL wideouts and you will see that it takes the huge majority of them three years to emerge. Who knows where the Jets will be three years from now - who the QB will be. This is a win now league and I am not willing to throw away two stars for a 30% chance the Jets will have a star WR in three years.

WR is just no that important. Other than the 99 Rams and the 06 Colts, the recent SB champions have had pedestrian WR corps - Baltimore, New England, Tampa, Pittsburgh.

Let's face it, championships are won with defense and in the trenches and that is where the Jets are drafting again this year. If that does not make your April exciting enough, play Madden and build your own fantasy team with all the skill players you want. Then draw your attention to the Jets again in September and watch them improve and build a perennial winner by drafting DL, OL and CB.

30-50% CJ works out! Do you know anything about the guy? He will have a huge height advantage against anyone who ever covers him and is faster than an average cornerback. He will succeed the guy is a physical freak of nature.

Hmmm...lets think about this for a second. We give away 2 proven pro-bowl caliber players and our first pick, for one guy who has proven nothing at the pro-level? No thank you.

What people don't seem to understand is that we have a good thing going right now. We turned around our team to 10-6 and have a lot of the necessary parts needed to win. Why give that all up for a high potential WR?

Charles Rogers was also a can't miss freak. I can make a list of dozens and dozens of college players who were can't miss freaks over the years that completely missed. So don't hand me this BS about how great this guy is going to be because neither you nor I nor the NFL scouts can predict the future. Just take a look at the first round picks over the last 20 years and then come back and talk to me about can't miss players. Here's a sampling:

    Jim Everett
    John Hand
    Brian Jozwiak
    Alonzo Highsmith
    Brent Fullwood
    Kelly Stouffer
    Aundray Bruce
    Rickey Dixon
    Tony Mandrich
    Tim Worley
    Sammie Smith
    Jeff George
    Blair Thomas
    Andre Ware
    Mike Croel
    Eric Swann
    Todd Lyght
    Steve Emtman
    Quentin Coryatt
    Sean Gilbert
    Desmond Howard
    David Klingler
    Tommy Vardell
    Rich Mirer
    Curtis Conway
    Heath Shuler
    Ki=Jana Carter
    Michael Westbrook
    Kerry Collins
    JJ Stokes
    Lawrence Phillips
    Tim Biakabutuka
    Darrell Russell
    Ike Hilliard
    Ryan Leaf
    Andre Wadsworth
    Curtis Enis
    Tim Couch
    Akili Smith
    David Boston
    Courtney Brown
    Peter Warrick
    Travis Taylor
    Leonard Davis
    Gerard Warren
    David Terrell
    Koren Robinson
    David Carr
    Joey Harrington
    Mike Williams
    Charles Rogers
    Byron Leftwich
    Jordan Gross
    Reggie Williams

All of these players were chosen in the first ten picks of the draft and all of them were "can't miss" freaks.

Calvin Johnson is a can't miss type of guy...however trading Coles and Vilma...

ARE YOU KIDDING ME...those are two of your leaders for a rookie.

Calvin Johnson reminds me of a better, harder working Andre Johnson, but still Vilma is the "Mangini" of the defense, and Coles is flat out a warrior.
