That was cool - wonder what night that interview is from? And I rememver Mawae having the cross, but not Lyle.
So I guess they think of religion and what Jesus would do right before burying a fellow human being into the turf???? I just don't see how religion and sports mix. I thought Mawae was great, but his reputation was a tough SOB who was in other's players' faces during the game. In fact, I recall that he was in the center of a practice brawl between the offense and the defense during a Jet practice a few years back. What did the cross have to do with that???????

Actually King David continually prayed that God would give Him victory in battle. I think these playes recognize that football is a tough game and they need divine assistance to endure it. When did having faith mean you avoided conflict? Football is both a physical and mental game. Kevin Mawae with in the context of football was a tough SOB and knew he had to be intimidating to be successful at his position. Jesus' mission was to die a horrible death, crucifixtion. While knowing this, he still chose to endure his God given destiny. So Jesus is the one who endured the cross or took on hardship. He stepped up to the plate and did what he had to do, die by means of crucifixtion. So the cross is a sign of Christian faith and a reminder football players in this instance that in the midst of hardship (though not to be compared to Roman crucifixion) they can look to Jesus to give them divine assistence for Jesus is the ultimate overcomer.
Man, the religious thing, combined with the fact that Lyle looks like an escaped convict, makes me think of Cape Fear.

The post is dealing with a players faith. If we can talk about Pacman Jones off-field issues then we can talk about a player faith and how it effects or doesn't effect their game. And if your definition of god is the all powerful one who gives people success in this world then I would have to agree with you that god is a baseball fan and a pats fan but I do not subscribe to that defintion of god. Just saying that some players look to God for strength to endure the game of football. It is not neccessarily tied to the outcome of the game. Whether you think this is a legimate belief or not is another question.

Not singling you out , but some of the remarks on here are a bit personal. If someone chooses to worship their god , let them its there choice but don't mock them. I go to church and take my children I also play sport , that doesn't make me a freak. Oh yes and before games there are a few of us who pray , the way we see it if theres a God we might get a little help , if theres no God , well we haven't given up a whole lot , win win situation.
