0 from the pats... The deal is basically a one year deal with a 5 year option based on performance. If the pats like him they can extend him letting him make the lions share of his 12 mill. If they do not they can cut ties with him making him a f/a. The deal is setup so Stallworth has to prove himself to them pretty much. There are clauses protecting them from drug incidents and nagging injury's also. Even if they did extend him they would restructure or cut him in the latter years of the deal.

At worst the pats can use him for a year, draft a wr then cut him. They still have yet to see how jackson will pan out, and they can always pick up a wr with one of there 9 picks. At best him and Brady click and they get another Dieon Branch (for a lil less) plus a first round draft pick from when Branch walked. If they extend him of course.

Good price, low cost deal that gives the pats most all the power.

Sorry If I am a homer, I know a good deal when I see it.....

I disagree. I can see Stallworth in 2 receiver sets. Then again, it's the Pats, and they are anything but conventional.

I personally think the praise of the Pats' drafts have been exaggerated. They get an A every year immediately AFTER, but I don't think their drafts hold up as well in the long run. That's not to say they don't have certain individuals that worked out great as draft picks, but across the board their draft picks don't work out as well as projected. The Patriots are very adept at choosing FAs to fill holes that their draft picks don't fill and fit them into their system.

0 from the pats? He's going to make $3.6 to $4 million in the first year, whether he gets released after the season or not. He already got a $1 million signing bonus.

I know this. Your question was worded to lead me to believe you where asking if they owed him anything if they decided not to exercise the option, which they would not. Btw, at most he gets 3.6 million for the one year. Figuring he gets all the bonus's.

Looking at updated details of the deal, I have to admit it is a good one. I bet they draft someone and use him for a year then do not pick up the five year option.

    espn article

The deal -- negotiated by agent Drew Rosenhaus, who concluded a frenetic week in free agency by constructing a contract that met the needs of all parties -- can be as brief as one season or as lengthy as six. But for the Patriots to retain Stallworth beyond the 2007 season, a year in which he will make $3.6 million in bonuses and salary, New England will have to make a significant investment

    wrong and wrong

1)I clearly was not asking that, because no team owes any player any money if they release him (unless they actually guarantee future base salaries, which is extremely rare).
2)He can earn up to $4 million with incentives. $3.6 million he earns just by being on the roster this season (and getting the workout bonus, which he will).

    You're on a roll here.

Stallworth will receive an initial signing bonus of $1 million, a roster bonus of $1.6 million and a $300,000 workout bonus, to go along with his 2007 base salary of $700,000. That totals $3.6 million for the coming season.

Either way it was a great deal so stop hating, haha.

Do you read? There are $400,000 worth of incentives in the contract, based on the # of catches he has and whether he goes to the Pro Bowl.

$3.6 million he could earn by doing nothing all year except making the roster.

You are reading the wrong deallllll..... The one I am talking is the most current one.Do you know these incentives? You where the one telling me you personally knew the philly rumors where not true.... I know elvis and I to am an NFl insider, lying of course. I was refering to terms of the deal no expecting him to make the pro bowl and such. Just money he will make like the article states on the contract terms. The fact that Stallworth has to perform to get his extention in 2008 makes the deal great. They also got him for a great price. If he dos not work out no biggie, if he does, he makes reasonable money and obviously performed to there standers to pay him the 12 mill over 6 years. He plays well he is there next Dion branch for a little less money, and a first round pick they natted for letting Dion walk. Me thinks Tom brady will bring out this guys best, like he did to all the other recievers.

The deal was a great one and you cannot admit it:mad:

Did I say it was a bad deal? I think it's a solid low-risk deal.

You did make up the stuff about Stallworth.

You just need to stop making things up. It's a really bad habit. You just said he couldn't make more than $3.6 million. Incentives mean that he has the opportunity to earn more than that.

    Incentives for the 2007 season:

    70 catches- $100,000 ,
    75 catches - another $100,000
    80 catches- another $100,000
    Makes Pro Bowl roster- $100,000

espn.com got the deal wrong in the first place. They claimed it was $12 million guaranteed, originally.

The shoddy reporting of ESPN.com continues, as they completely ignored the incentives in the contract.

it doesn't really make a difference, though. I'm just quibbling. He likely won't earn the incentives anyway.

Right, they always do that. I was commenting on the most current contract. I waited until the most recent contract came out, as I knew the first one was pure speculation and wrong. I then confirmed the most recent one in the Boston media to make sure it was accurate. We both agree it was a solid deal so no need to quibble anymore. I missunderstood you because you where commenting on the incorrect contract. I apologize

The most current contract on espn clearly shows what I said was accurate.....

    A few points...

    1. It looks like "You work for peanut this year. If you do well, you get this" deal - you KNOW Pats won't hand the money. Stallworth may have been better staying put in Eagles.

    2. Does this make Pats better? Of course. They got adequate WR for peanuts, as a one-year stop-gap, maybe. I don't like the fact (if I were from Pats' standpoint) that one year's worth of experience at WR position - the chemistry, understanding of playbook or whatnot - can be fully wasted, but aside from that fact, this is clearly an improvement. Don't even mention that multi-million BS that Stallworth will just NEVER see. That's not how these things work, or played out.

    3. Pats getting A grade draft after draft... I just don't buy that. It's just media loving Pats that much, nothing more. If you don't agree, name one impact offensive player Pats drafted in years. Of course, Brady pick does NOT count, as it was not Belichik-Pioli pick. The fact of the matter is, they have picked the likes of Deion Branch (a diminutive receiver that couldn't break 1000 yard plateau even as Brady's go-to receiver) and more. Their picks have been solid defensively - no one can argue against that - but to call them all around A-drafting team is just outrageous.

    4. Still, I don't think the Jets should jump the guns at this point - they are not where Pats are at, so to speak. Pats are a perennial contenders, which needs occasional fixes here and there (and the FA signings are to patch the weaknesses). Ok, some part of the team will need a complete overhaul (say LB corps) but that CAN be done with draft this year, and I fully expect them to address such a need during the draft.

Jets? They are still rebuilding. Don't let the 10-6 PO appearance fool you. Jets are not where they want to be at this point. Their right side of the OL is still less-than-desirable status to say the very least on offense, and they still haven't found the legitimate stud NT to clog up the middle. (I don't buy Robertson hype, I am sorry.) While it makes you feel like the Jets are doing nothing, they are doing the best thing they can by staying put. They need at least two more solid draft to start contending, and I don't see why, as a Jet fan, I should feel impatient at other team's FA signing.

the bottom line of the thread here is that junc got on here and lambasted the Pats for the deal and started making assumptions and it was complete nonsense. Then jetsman22 came on and made perfect sense in everything he said and was attacked because some peple think hes a Pat fan. This thread is embarrassing to me as a regular on this board. The Jet homerism is riduculous and moronic. And junc please spare us once and for all your pompous know-it-all attitude. The next time you start a "I must respond" thread make sure to include that you lost this argument. Because you clearly lost the argument. Clearly
