The pats wr group has gotten strong by adding Stallworth. A lot of people on this sight say "Don't worry about what others are doing." WELL, When a team in your division make it to the AFC Championship game and upgrade more than anyone else in the league, that gives you somethinng to think about. The Jets caught hell with the wr's they had in the playoff game. I believe in Mangini skills. I also think CB positionneed more talent to deal with pats twice a year.
i have 1 question. Who? who are we gonna sign the CB market FA wise is pretty much dried up. and i dont think Sallworth and welker scare anyone enough to go make desprate signings. at this point only way we can get talented DB is in the draft imo.
we need to get maybe two corners in the draft......id tryto get houston or hughes in the first round and select a corner/ saftey in the fifth round, a guy hwo can play both positions
Why would we get 2 CBs. We just need one potential starter. Andre Dyson starts on one side, but there is plenty of depth (Miller, Barrett, Coleman, Poteat). We need one CB, hopefully in Round 1. Chris Houston probably won't be there after his great 40 times and Hughes will probably be around in the 3rd round anymore. Why do we need a Safety? We have a star Free Safety and two good Strong Safetys with Erik Coleman and Eric Smith. Smith could even become a great SS it sounds like. I'd like to get Darrelle Revis or Aaron Ross at #25. I think at least one of them should be there.
For a team that had trouble running the ball and stopping the run all year long last year, don't you think OL and DL should be the TOP priority rather than adding another CB??? If a defense can't stop the run effectively or rush the passer consistently, it doesn't matter who the CBs are.
To be honest I want Aaron Ross. He has more size than any corner on our team (6'1") he has good speed (4.4 40) played in a good football program down in Texas.
the pats have made some solid moves this offseason. upgrading their LB corp sustantially with thomas, and they have added some weapons for brady with welker and stallworth. we better have a very solid draft, because we really only added 1 player with impact potential in TJ. while hes a significant upgrade at RB we still have to sign/draft someone for the RT slot on the O line...TJ wont be gaining any yards if he has to keep running left... aside from the RT position, our defense needs a significant jump in the middle of the D line, as well as a bonifide pass rusher to take some pressure off of ellis. someone that can eat up a blocker. with the money to spend, the jets should have been players in pursuit of either the porter or thomas. i understand that you need to spend sensibly, but i dont think anyone can call that coleman contract sensible spending. that money would have been better spent on either of those linebackers. unless coleman comes in here and hes the second comming, or we get some stud NT/LB in the draft, we're going to have some issues come the regular season. CB is a need that we have to address in the draft. theres no way justin miller is the answer. he will need to learn how to cover NFL recievers....and not get PI penalties when he does it. poteat isnt great, but a decent backup, and barrett looks like hes lost his way a bit. i trust that this is an area that will also get a long hard look in round 1.
one thing i was kinda upset with with FA so far was that there were several solid tackles, including langston walker (signed with buff). signing one of these guys could have helped our positioning in the draft as far as what our key needs would be and what we would immediately address on day 1. i know the FO has a plan....and i trust in the fact they will make the best choices they can for the team. i just wish they would have made a bigger splash in FA. there were guys available that could have been had. TJ doesnt exactly count since that was a trade...
Our back 4 and 5 are fine it's the front 7 that needs to be improved dramatically. Stop the run and create a pass rush with the front 7 and we will be fine defending the pass. We stink up front.
Consider the two cases: 1. You let your opposing QB throw the ball at his receiver, then try to defend it. Chances are, the QB (namely, Brady) must have seen some crack in the coverage, or any mismatch for that matter. 2. You stop the opposing QB even before he attempts anything. (Sack would be gravy, but forcing him to throw before the play is ready also counts.) Which of the two seems more effective to you?
imo, blalock or tyler would be ideal in round 1....as well as realistic. either way we upgrade one of the lines....
Stallworth has nothing to do with it. Yes, we need a CB, whether Stallworth is a Pat or not. Personally, I'm not afraid of a WR that has never gotten over 1000 yards recieving and has an injury history. For the $ the Pats gave him, I like it. He isn't worth anywhere near what they gave him. You would think this guy is a pro bowler or somthing... he just isn't that good. Now, hopefully the Pats sign Hartwell (rumors around to that effect) a guy whi failed in Atlanta, a team with 2 holes in theor LB corp. Hartwell has had 3 knee surgeries in 2 years. Let the Pats sign him too.... he's done.
Cornerback is a luxury right now, as we have five guys on the roster with starting experience. Improving the pass rush will improve the pass defense much more then adding another cornerback who will flop. With the rule changes theres no such thing as a shutdown corner, so why even draft them that high anymore?
Hopefully? Hartwell is a low-risk high reward player...Since he has been injured the past 2 seasons, his salary will be very cheap, maybe vet minium or a max of $1.5 million for one season... And i'd jump on that if i'm the Jets. If he gets hurt again, hey no big deal, he won't hurt the cap and then just let him walk after 07...Same thing New England could do... Wouldn't want him going there.
That's what we said about Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney till they wrecked the Jets in the Wild Card game.
good thread guys - and make no mistake about it - the jets DO need to upgrade CB but by how much???? the old school thinking from parcells right down the line to mangini is that you build your front seven and than pay attention to the secondary, staffing it with capable but NOT star studded players.... unfortunately the jets do not have a star studded front seven to take the heat off the CB's so they may be "forced" to upgrade the position significantly in the draft this year - partly in response to the pats moves. i can definitely see 2 CB's taken in the first 4 rounds..... for those of you who think stallworth is not a big deal think again, the pats can bring in just about any NFL caliber receiver with speed and decent hands and that receiver will likley emerge into a serious threat because of the QB. he makes all the receivers better with his ability to make all the throws and put the ball in the best spot for the receiver to not only catch but to stay on their feet and run. jil
We can't worry about what the Pats are doing. These moves just SCREAM that they are making one more desperate attempt at a Super Bowl. You can make the arguement all day long that it is all based on the salary cap # sky-rocketing in 2-3 years, but the fact is, you don't give a career underachieving # 2 WR, and a KR/# 3 WR the lucrative deals that the Pats did, unless they truly are making one last push. This year's FA class just doesn't warrant the crazy spending they are doing unless they truly are desperate. Additionally, history points that these desperate attempts fail everytime. We need to keep building the foundation and worrying about ourselves. As previously discussed, the front lines are what win and lose football games, and frankly we are 1 or 2 solid starters on the OL, and 1 solid starter and one depth guy away on the DL, from having a very talented group on both sides, most likely for the long term. W/ that said, one more quality CB is needed, whether we address that in the 1st round, will depend on who falls to us. The point to which we are currently situated suggests that someone big time will fall to us that faills a need, and it's just a waiting game to find out who. If it's a DB, so be it. If not, we have 2 more picks in the 2nd round to concentrate more on specfic needs.
