The newly free spending Patriots, trying to emulate the great success of Daniel Snyder's Washington Redkins, have added another high priced FA as they agreed w/ Donte Stallworth which inclides $12 mil guaranteed. It's amazing what they have done this offseason, the news keeps getting better. I wonder if they hired vinny cerrato to help them w/ personnel decisions? Stallworth is a very talented guy but he has had some injury issues in the past(he hasn't missed alot of game until last year but he has been digned up alto like Santana used to be) and he'sa guy who has had ONE season of 60 or more recs and let's not forget he is in the league's substance abuse program. this is a HUGE risk by giving him $12 mil guaranteed. if the # was lower and it was incentive based I'd say it was a great deal but to guarantee $12 mil for a shaky character guy is again un-Patriot like. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2794615
Actually you are wrong. This is a ONE year deal, with a five year option IF the pats choose to extend him. That first link is not accurate. This is the accurate deal. The deal includes all the protection you claimed it does not. It does not include 12 million in guaranteed money over six years, unless the pats say so. It only covers the few million he has coming this year unless they extend him for the full deal, in which he would get close to 11.5 over six years. That is IF they extend him past 2007. Says the original article was inaccurrate at the bottom of the current one http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2794615 Looks like you are going to have to say this is a great deal.Details just came out. The contract has an option giving the pats the ability to back out of the deal in 2008 if they are not happy with Stallworths performance. The deal is basically a one year deal with a option that the pats can choose or NOT choose to pick up in 08. A 1 year deal with a 5 year option, based on performance. He does not see the lions share of the 12 mill unless the pats think he is worth it. In fact he only is gauranteed a few mill unless the pats extend him. They have protection aginast any drug infractions or chronic injuries of course. The pats have the power in this deal. The numbers are very good whether they keep him for the one gauranteed year, or they sign him for the full six. if they sign him he obv blossomed and would be well worth the close to 12 mill over six years. If not they spend a couple mill for his services this year and then cut ties at no real loss. As for the rest of there fa period > Corey Retires - They pick up Sammy Morris to sit behind Maroney and Faulk >Graham heads to denver to make 15 mill gauranteed - They grab Kyle brady to block and block only ( They already have Thomas and Watson) They could get a third round pick in compensation for losing DG. (along with others) >They need help a talented lb immediatly - So they sign the best free agent on the market at the position (who fits there scheme perfectly) for less money then hey could have made in the open market. >They need a slot, kick return, first down guy who will be a jack of all trades to replace t brown immediatly. They pick up welker... >They need a deep threat type talent to they pick up Stallworth, which they talked into a great deal (read above) >They still have 9 million left in cap space out of there 29 million. They can now head into the draft with there 9 picks including there 2 first rounders add a corner, a lb, and a safty whatever they need. Among the depth they can grab with nine picks. You are comparing a team that did not even spend close to the cap and filled there immediate holes with (calculated moves) the redskins? LOL!!!!! The pats got a a draft score of A over the last five years. That is not goint to change now. If they draft well ,which they wil , they have had a awesome offseason. I keep telling you that in every single year of there superbowl runs they spent all the way to the cap. In 2001 they had 24 free agents signed. These moves where calculated. What are you going to say when they back these moves up with a good draft? You do not stare at 29 million dollars if you have the needs the patriots did. You seem to ignore the skins do not draft for shit. I cannot fathom how you think a team with a draft grade of A is not going to use there nine picks to back up there fa moves. They have always drafted well, but that will change since they got there immediate needs with money they saved due to smart cap spending. They still have 9 million in cap space!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess all the nfl people praising the pats offseason moves are biased right? They hated the pats last year just like everyone else. Btw, Stallworth played all 16 games in 2004, 2005 and missed 5 games in 2006.... 43 games played 5 missed. What a huge risk...
and here comes the Pats #1 fan to explain how every move the Pats a,mde was the greatest move in the history of the NFL.
Way too much for a guy who can't stay healthy, and has drug issues. The Patriots just got hosed by Rosensnake. 12 million signing bonus?? I'm sure happy the Phinz didn't make that deal today. He's decent, but inconsistant, and certainly a risk for injury. There's no way anyone else would have matched that offer....
No just to debunk your off base accusation. 1 year deal with 5 year option if they choose to exercise it. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2794615 The details of the deal just came out. The contract has an option giving the pats the ability to back out of the deal in 2008 if they are not happy with Stallworths performance. The deal is basically a one year deal with a option that the pats can choose or NOT choose to pick up in 08. It is a 1 year deal with a 5 year option, based on performance. he does not see the lions share of the 11 or 12 mill unless the pats think he is worth it. They have protection aginast any drug infractions or chronic injuries of course. The pats have most the power in this deal. The pats still have 9 million in cap space.. They make calculated moves to replace guys that are leaving or are immediate needs. Yet you make it sound like they are running around signing anyone. Which is not the case. As I listed above, they filled there immediate needs and will draft well like they always do with there nine picks.... Why do all these people keep saying the pats moves are the right ones and other teams should learn. The media hated the pats last year. If I recall most where rooting for the jets in the playoff game. Icannot wait until the jets play there .516 schedule next year. People are way to delusional on this site. Nfl.com praises pats offseason moves NFL week in review: Versatility in demand By Dave Gladow NFL.com (March 8, 2007) -- With the flurry of signings, cuts and trades over the past several days, even some of the bigger stories have been glossed over. For instance, even though the Broncos have added three big names in tight end Daniel Graham, running back Travis Henry and cornerback Dre' Bly, folks aren't making much of it. Perhaps that's partly due to the dismal track record that big-name free agents have for improving their new squads. There are countless examples of teams spending good money on a big name, then plugging him into a system he won't work in. And then there are the Patriots, who are uniquely positioned to have more success in player acquisition than perhaps any other team. Why? Call it the versatility factor. The Patriots are more creative in their offensive and defensive schemes than just about any other team. Instead of coming up with rigid schemes and forcing players into them, they adapt their schemes to the talent on hand. And when their players can do multiple things, that's when the real fun begins. The signing of versatile linebacker Adalius Thomas just makes sense. Need to confuse Peyton Manning? Drop your athletic ends into coverage. Out of defensive backs? Put your wide receiver back there. No running backs? Run a five-wide set. No receivers? Throw to your tight ends. It never seems to end. That's why anyone who appreciates what this team continues to do had to smile at what the Patriots did in the first week of free agency. Firstly, New England made a point to address its needs, bringing special teams ace Larry Izzo back into the fold while signing blocking tight end Kyle Brady (replacing Graham) and productive running back Sammy Morris (replacing Corey Dillon ). But where the Patriots were truly golden was in addressing their biggest weaknesses in 2006. Speed at linebacker was a problem, as was production from the receiving corps. But after signing the top free agent available, Adalius Thomas, at linebacker and trading for wide receiver Wes Welker, the Patriots look like they hit home runs once again. Adalius Thomas can play linebacker. He can play end. He can cover receivers down field. He can rush the passer. He can stuff the run. In short, he's Bill Belichick's dream player. Welker, by comparison, is a limited player, but what limitations those are! In addition to being a first-class kick and punt returner, he's developed himself into a superb possession receiver. Like Troy Brown, he'll do the dirty work and fill in the cracks. Between the additions of Thomas and Welker and the rest of their offseason moves, the Patriots continue to display that they know what they're doing, and that teams around the league would likely do well to emulate them -- both when it comes to talent acquisition and usage of said talent. Bills: Ending the speculation, the Bills finally traded running back Willis McGahee. In exchange, Buffalo received three draft picks from the Baltimore Ravens. The Bills may now look to someone like Chris Brown or Dominic Rhodes to replace him ... Buffalo placed a premium on improving its offensive line early in free agency, adding guard Derrick Dockery from Washington, tackle Langston Walker from Oakland and tackle Jason Whittle from Minnesota ... Dockery may replace guard Tutan Reyes, who was released. Dolphins: The big move is the addition of linebacker Joey Porter, who was released by Pittsburgh. Porter is slowing down, but he should still be an emotional leader for the Dolphins ... Miami is butchering its own roster at the moment, apparently dissatisfied with the previous status quo of mediocrity. The latest cuts included quarterback Joey Harrington, tight end Randy McMichael, defensive end Kevin Carter and guard Jeno James ... One player who will return is defensive tackle Keith Traylor, who re-signed as an unrestricted free agent ... Former Green Bay tight end David Martin was signed as a free agent to replace McMichael ... Miami inked former Chicago safety Cameron Worrell to a two-year deal.
2004 16 games 2005 16 games 2006 12 games Out of 44 games he missed 4. You only know about the drug thing because the eagles leaked it. First offense is not public. There are a ton of guys on that list. You have no idea about the details or what it entailed, yet you say drug problem? Daniel Graham just got 15 million over 5 years. Many considered him to be somewhat dissapointing at times. Funny how everyone on this site praises Denver and there moves, but the pats make some calculated moves and they are nuts. You are whining about 12 mill over 6 years at this day in age. Btw, you just gave Joey Porter 20 million bucks I gauranteed money. You might wanna rethink talking junk about other teams spending. Team with way more cap space then you. Porter has had NUMEROUS charector issues over the years.
How come it's "calculated" when the pats do it but not when teams like Wash do it? They are running around singing anyone. Brady has proven he can win w/ average WRs so why overpay for more average WRs? Then you post an article praising NE? Gee I have never seen that before. no matter what NE does they are praised, if they sit back and allow others to overspend they are praised for not overspending then if they overspend they are praised for it. They could sign Blair Thomas today to a big contract and they would be praised for it. I am a guy who has praised the Pats alot in the past, i rpaise them mroe than any jet fan has. I respect and admire the way they have handled their busniess BUT that's over w/ now that they are turning ito DC North. Huh? When does the media "root" for a team? EVERY move the Pats make is great. Whatever you say patsfan22. I have no problem w/ Pats fans on the board but when you come in disguised as a Jet fan I have a problem. Change your username so people don't get fooled by you. You are obviously not a Jet fan. Now the suppsoed Jet fan is rooting for the Jets to lose so that fans aren't so delusional.
Missed 4 and has been playing dinged up in many others. he has an injury probe history that limits his great talent. We don't know that. Which Stallowrth will you get? Stallworth has ability but has rarely played up to it.
I am a jets fan... I posted one of the many articles from websites like espn and si praising there pats offseason moves. The same sites you use to post articles praising the jones trade. Guess they are biased towards the jets also. I love how you ignore the fact the pats have had a draft grade of A and are going into this draft with nine picks. The got there immediate needs in fa and still have 9 mill left in space. You act like Daniel Graham didnt just get 15 million g money over 5 years. I bet you think he is the best tight end out there huh? They made good fa moves and if they have a good draft like they normally do, it will have been a A plus offseason. Looks to me like they need far less (immediate things in the draft now) I guess one of the best drafting teams over the last 6 years will forget how to draft with there nine picks this year. They might only have 9 million in cap space left also!!!! DISASTER
I laugh at a team that traded a second rounder and a 7th rounder for Wes Welker. The only trade worse than that is a Thomas Jones and a second for another second rounder.......but who would do that deal.......
Sometimes we as Jets fans tend to be envious of what our rivals are doing .Lets put down the rose colored glasses and admit that they have done well in the offseason.Stallworth is a good player!!!!!
You are a Jet fan that wrote: I know alot of jet fans that want the Jets to lose to teahc the fans a lesson about being optimisitc. They had a draft grade of A? the draft is next month. I know they'll get an A like they do every year but can we wait until the draft to grade them? They overpaid in FA for Thomas, Welker and now Stallworth. It will bite them at some point. Are they more talented? YES, but this game isn't just about talent and as a Pats fan you should know that. obviously the Pats have had a ton of talent in their dynasty years but they won mroe b/c they were a great team. When you are a Pats player and see them lowball or ship put core Championship players to overspend on FAs then that fractures the team. The Pats HAD a Championship formula, now they are trying the redskins championship formula and for that I am grateful.
If I like the Pats move I would say so, I am absolutely envious of what NE has done and I have praised them for years but that stops now w/ these moves. As Jet fans most jump off the deep end when they see teams(especially div rivals) get big name players but that's not what this game is about and if it was Wash would have been a dynasty this decade instead of NE.
what does it matter that they traded a 2nd and seventh rounder for Welker? The Pats have two first round draft picks, I bet they trade one of their first rounders this year How many draft picks do they have and how many more will they get in the compensation.Welker can return kicks/punts, is a recxeiver and I believe last season he kicked an extra point or a field goal so he is pretty versertile. What is wrong with that? The pats had Troy Brown doing multiple things and Welker will be the same way.If you like a player, my philosphy is do whatever you have to to get him. Giving up draft choices for a player is not a crime. We afterall give away a 4th rounder for Barlow, but we have recovered and made out good with the Thomas Jones trade.
They have had a draft grade of A over the last five years. I doubt that will go to a F this year. They overpayed like everyone else who picked up a free agent did. Refer to Daniel Graham making 15 million over five years. They have to make moves in a Market. Would you not like them to sign anyone and ignore there immediate needs? Or use there 29 mill. I think coming out of this fa period with nine million left out of there 29, with there entire roster tendured and everyone signed is great. Thomas could have made more money in SF then NE. They have 9 draft picks including two first rounders. The article says close to 12 mill for stallworth no figures yet... He is less money then Dion Branch who he replaces. They got a 1 rst round pick for Dion. Out of 44 games he missed 4 and he had 70 receptions in 2005. He has a 15 yard average and is a real deep threat. With Brady he will be awesome.. edit : it is a one year deal that gives the pats the ability to extend him for a pre negotiated 5 year deal... This is a very good deal.... 1 year gauranteed.... with the abilty to cut or extend him for five based on performance...... http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2794615
I absolutely love what our FO has done so far, although I am baffled that we resined Bobby Hamilton and still have Kimo on the team, but I can live with that.I like the fact that we have not gone crazy and spent millions on players so far.I know we will do nicely in the draft. All I want now is for us to get back into the fourth round. It is critical that on the second day of the draft we have a pick in the second round.
There is a big difference between what NE has done & what Washington has done in the past. For one thing Washington never had a Tom Brady or Bill Belicheck to go along with the talent they brought in. Another is Washington tried to build there team through FA, the Patriots are just bringing in missing pieces while still building through the draft, they have two first round pick still to improve there team more than they already have. Bringing in more talent for Brady & Belicheck to work with is scary for Jets fans & should be scary for all NFL teams, right now they are the favorites to win the SB next year.
At that price, I'm glad Miami passed on him... He'll likely make the Pats offense better in terms of having a deep threat, but beyond that, Stallworth is mostly an inconsistant WR. That's why he's been unable to find a permanent home during his career. He'll make the Pats offense better, but not significantly. Time will tell. I know that Saints / Eagles aren't missing him.....
Exactly. Comparing the pats to the skins is halarious. The pats have always drafted well. The skins never draft well. With nine picks and the major issues filled the pats will have a far more flexible draft. They have had a draft rating of A over the last 5 years, that is not going to all the sudden change.
