I love how you guys are just looking at his stats and saying the guys a bust in the making. Miami sucked balls last year, what was he like the 4th option on that team anyway? You draft people on potential not there stats. By your logic Garrett Wolfe is the best running back in this draft I guess.
I'm not looking at the stats. He's a bad football player and he doesn't produce on the field. If he's the fourth option on a garbage offense (which I don't think is right), WHY DO YOU WANT HIM IN THE FIRST ROUND????? Wow, just think about what you people are saying. He never produced and you can't blame it on the rest of the team. I hope the FO are smarter than most of the people on this board. Greg Olsen is utter garbage.
why do I want him in the first round? Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Kellen Winslow, Todd Heap, Jason Witten, its time to add a dimension to our roster that most NFL teams already have.
HE'S NOT THAT DIMENSION! He hasn't done ANYTHING...why do you think he's that dimension. Zach Miller has done a lot better in college than Olsen has, but everyone's drooling over these stupid combine #'s. If he can't produce on the field, then it doesn't even matter.
Compare him with Vernon Davis ... I dont think he's good enough to carry Vernon jock. I would be shocked if we wasted a 1st round pick on a TE, IMO they are just a smidge above Guard and Fullback when it comes to the draft. Historically 1st round TE's rarely come anywhere near their hype.
I'm a huge Chris Baker fan. A thread like this just seems so disrespectful to a guy who's done everything that's ever been asked of him.
4th option on a shit team? Do you realize you made our point? Usually good players stand out on a shit team.
Nice call. I agree 100%. He isn't utilized a whole lot, but when he is, he never disapoints. Does everyone remember that spectacular catch he made at the end of the Cleveland game that SHOULD HAVE BEEN (WAS) a touchdown? Also, Adam Schein and Solomon Wilcots had the same thing to say when a caller asked about drafting Greg Olsen at #25. They also said he was a very solid TE and is great when called upon to do something. It would really upset me if we went after a TE early... Especially Greg Olsen, whom many of you wouldn't even be considering now if he didn't run a 4.51.
I'm just saying its not totally insane to draft a speedy TE with good hands and underrated blocking skills if he falls to #25.
I like the TE, idea but what about DeMarcus Tyler, DT, North Carolina St. ..he is 6'2 305 - NOSE TACKLE??? DeMarcus Tyler DT 6'2 305 North Carolina St. ?Tank? moved into the starting lineup as a sophomore and came through with 33 tackles, with six of them behind the line of scrimmage. Last year as a junior, he came through with 41 tackles, 4.5 for loss and two sacks, playing on the same line with Mario Williams, John McCargo, and Manny Lawson, all 1st round draft picks. Drawing more attention as a senior, he still managed to post impressive stats. Tyler had 49 tackles, 8.5 for loss, and three sacks on the year. Tyler gets his nickname because he is built like one. His height is only average, but he has a very strong build, and is a load to stop once he gets moving. He shows good quickness off the snap, and the ability to change directions quickly. Tyler also shows the strength to hold his ground at the point of attack and get off the block to make the tackle. Tyler isn?t much of a playmaker. He will stop the run, and can get penetration, but he is not going to get to the quarterback very often. He also needs to work on staying low to the ground as the game goes on, and not rely on his power to make plays. Tyler has crept up draft boards as the season has gone on, and is now arguably the top senior defensive tackle in the draft. His lack of explosion will probably keep him from contending with the talented underclassmen at his position for the top DT overall spot, but he is a very good defensive tackle and could crack the first round in April.
Please lets not be another team fooled by a player that had a good combine workout. That thing is designed to get Gm's fired. A scrub not seen for four years flys up the draftboard because of 40 times or bench presses.
If Olsen is there we draft him. We need a stub at TE and this kid can play. He's too fast and for most LBs to cover and Too Big for safeties to handle. He would free up a receive for 1on1 every down and should be getting 80 catches a year.
Theres using stats blindly and using stats like they should be. Garrett Wolfe produced yes, but size, conference, the line he ran behind, the offense he was in....everything has to be considered. IMO, statistical use is way underrated by people in football. There is a way to include them.
You were right about one thing. He probably will be a stub. Not sure what that is, but it sounds bad, and that's what I expect.
Here is a part of yahoos latest mock from today. Looks like there is a chance Olsen will be there around 25. 24. New England Patriots ? Greg Olsen, tight end, Miami (Fla.). The loss of Daniel Graham to free agency does not create a huge hole, but the Patriots' way of doing things is to pick the best players on the board and look for spots where they can create mismatches. A late-season injury to last year's second-round pick Chad Jackson has created a bit of concern, but adding a versatile weapon like Olsen ? who can line up at tight end, slot or even out wide thanks to his speed ? would give them yet another choice that would raise eyebrows on draft day but dividends on Sundays. The addition of tight end Kyle Brady to serve as a blocker would have no effect on them picking Olsen if he is on the board. N.Y. Jets 25. New York Jets ? Anthony Spencer, defensive end/outside linebacker, Purdue. The Jets have addressed their backfield situation (Thomas Jones), so the critical areas of concern are mostly on the defensive side of the ball ? nose tackle, pass rusher and cornerback. If a guy like Greg Olsen were to slide to this spot, I believe they would take a long look at how the board stacks up for finding defensive help in the next two rounds. But because that scenario does not play out here, the primary need area for them is finding a front-seven playmaker. As they initially indicated an interest in acquiring the services of Adalius Thomas, the pass rusher comes before the run stuffer. Spencer has ideal speed and athleticism to be this year's version of the new "hybrid"-scheme pass rusher. His versatility as a defender also will excite head coach Eric Mangini. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=jm-mockdraft030707&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
There definately is a very slight chance he's around at #25, not a great one though IMO. Also, Yahoo puts out some really bad mocks, so I wouldn't trust what that writer says. Oh, and there is NO WAY New England takes a TE. Ben Watson starts, Kyle Brady blocks, David Thomas is a good young player and so is Garrett Mills. That's an AWFUL projection. Plus, I don't want Olsen.
I'm going to assume you meant stud. You're saying we need a "stud TE" but guess what, we already have a solid TE. We don't have any pass rush without overblitzing. We have only half of a decent cornerback duo. We lack a good run blocking offensive line. We can't stop the run. Potential "stud" players as pass rushing OLBs, 3-4 DEs, CBs, and Gs will be available who actually produced in college. Guys at positions of need who are better prospects than Olsen. No, why would you want that?! I don't understand how some of you can't get this through your skulls.
Olsen is far from a stud. He just seems to be really good because the depth at TE in this year's draft is next to nothing. Please don't confuse workout numbers with actual talent. He is not the next great Miami TE. If we're picking anybody in the first round it should be a Blaylock or Revis.
