BJ Askew Finds a Team ... The Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They have a knack for picking up the fullbacks we released. First Sowell last season, now Askew. I'll be rooting for him though. http://www.fflivewire.com/Article.asp?ID=332007gey3289dz Bucs Sign FB Askew Written by: - ffLiveWire - ¦ 3/3/2007 Source: www.pewterreport.com Buccaneers have signed former New York Jets fullback B.J. Askew to a multi-year deal. The Bucs just signed fullback Mike Alstott on Thursday, but were seeking to add another fullback to the mix to replace Jerald Sowell, who is a free agent and is not expected to return to Tampa Bay. Hopefully we can get Sowell back. That would be great. He's the lead blocker that can pave some lanes for Leon Washington/whoever else.
im glad for Askew, i hope he does something with himself... As for Sowell, i'll welcome him back with open arms.
I'll pass on Sowell.. another overrated player. Askew said he wanted to go where he can be an RB. He may get to be a change of pace back there since the Cado is in the shop a lot.
How is he overrated? He catches the ball well and is a very solid lead blocker. He wouldn't cost much and we could probably get him for close to the veteran minimum. He's just the type of fullback we need, IMO.
I disagree with the very good lead blocker statement. Totally. Alstott is an AWFUL, I repeat, AWFUL blocker, and Sowell still didn't crack the lineup. I just spent a week in Tampa and that's ALL you heard was 1) How bad of a blocker Alstott was and they can't understand why he can run people over but he can't block and .. 2) Sowell must SUCK if he can't get on the field. With all that said, they said they needed to sign Alstott because Sowell is a borderline NFL player. I happen to agree with that. I'd pass on him. We need a big bruising blocker to run Schott's offense.
I remember him being pretty good here, but oh well... Are there any great lead blockers out there? I don't know of any.
I'd take Griffith from the Falcons, since they just spent 3M per on a FB.... However, it'll be hard to find one.. these guys can be found cheap if you find the right guy. I never was a fan of Sowell, even when he was here. Now, I never thought he sucked like the TB people were saying (fans, radio hosts, etc), so maybe he even went more downhill. However, I think his pass catching was a product of the system (or the dump offs I should say) more than anything else.
If you're looking for a big lead blocker, I don't think Griffith is your guy. He's more of a pass cacthing/running fullback I thought. Plus, he's only 5-11 230, which isn't much bigger than a lot of NFL RBs. As for Le'Ron McClain, he could be a great blocker, but I wouldn't count on a 5th-6th round pick stepping in immediately and starting.
Jerald Sowell, if I'm not mistaken, has the most ST tackles in Jets history. Just a great special teams player in his prime. Haven't seen him in a while, but always liked him. Not a great blocker, but was a great pass catcher from the FB position.
Wasted 3rd round pick.. Oh well. Man, TB loves our reject Fullbacks and Tight Ends. Add BJ to an already impressive list of Becht Jolley and well, Sowell was good but still.. maybe they'll get Barlow too?
Yup. And don't forget Strait. TB is the place for discarded Jets. So who's going to be your FB this year? So I know who to expect the block for Cadillac next year.
Whats with the Bucs and signing our garbage? Jerald Sowell, BJ Askew, Anthony Becht, Doug Jolley...........
Thats because he didnt get to utilize his versatility with the jets. Nobody respects a fullback, and I really wish good things for him with the bucs.
