I wouldn't be surprised to see us sign some garbage like Banta-Cain now, seeing as how Thomas is off the table (God forbid you actually pay a free agent), and Porter is probably in the same boat.

If the goal is to continue to widen the gap between us and the Pats... then mission accomplished, I guess.

That's my point. You don't need necessarily need those big FAs to improve, you need role players.

You need more than role players. You do need an impact player or two.. fact is, New England got better. They are still gonna be there.. and they are still the big dog in the yard. It's gonna be an uphill battle to unseat them.

We'll see what they do.. But acquiring a Banta-Cain type isn't going to exactly jolt the Jet fan base with enthusiasm.

If they signed him as the first signing, I'd still be pissed by it. He's a crappy player who is overrated by the NY media because of the whole Mangini/Patriot thing. He's terrible.

I don't think anyone is hoping we sign 80 mill contracts, but it sucks seeing your competition getting better. Those signings are out of control, agreed, but that is what I am frustrated with-- it's just crazy how certain teams, like the brown have the space to sign contracts like that, after signing 2 HUGE lineman contracts last year.

And what did they get out of that? What have the Redskins gotten out of doing that?

Exactly. The only Patriot I want to see the Jets sign is Brady, and that ain't gonna happen.

Really, what do you think about Porter?

It all depends on the contract with him. He'll be 30 when the season starts, so I really don't want to see too long of a contract (4-5 years). Linebackers really aren't big out there right now, so it's hard to scale their inflation level. According to the Steelers' official website, he was a cap casualty, so money could potentially be a legitimate problem. I don't doubt him as a player or leader, though. He is someone who has been vocal in the past as a standout leader.

Edit: It's a shame that nothing looks like it will materialize out of the initial rumours, but the front office probably has a good reason.
