From Draft Daddy.com.... Word out of DC has the Redskins trading Ladell Betts and their 6th overall pick to the Jets for Jon Vilma and the Jets 25th overall selection. DD.com Comment: Don't be fooled draft fans, rumors about trades prior to the combine are pretty much garbage made up by rabid fans. Besides the fact that no one has worked out, if these teams really were thinking about these moves, the rumors would surface the week prior to the draft or not at all. When Denver traded up for Jay Cutler last year, they were so secretive that no Broncos personnel were in contact with Cutler's representation or Cutler himself throughout the entire pre-draft process.
http://blogs.nydailynews.com/jets/archives/2007/02/jets_unlikely_to_deal_vilma.php Jets Unlikely to Deal Vilma Random thoughts as we get closer to March 2, the start of free agency: I usually don’t put too much stock in Internet trade rumors, but this Jonathan Vilma rumor is intriguing. Would the Jets trade Vilma and the 25th pick to the Redskins for the 6th pick and RB Ladell Betts? Highly unlikely. I don’t think the Jets are going to give up on Vilma, a good football player, after one sub-par season in the 3-4 defense. What they need to do is build around him, not eliminate him, to make him more productive in this system. Betts rushed for 1,154 yards last season because Clinton Portis got hurt, but he’s not a special back. He had no runs longer than 26 yards, which says a lot. Also remember: He signed a five-year contract extension last December, a deal in which he received a $3.5 million signing bonus. Why trade a player three months after giving him that kind of money?
absolutely not. running back is not our greatest need, and we're going to give up our leader on defense for one that's injury prone? stick with vilma, let him get a better group of players around him, and watch him flourish. i'd give up the 25th pick for turner over this trade any day
It's kinda funny...all this trade talk. On one hand, you have those who say Vilma will shine once we add a solid DT which will open up some holes and allow him to make plays. On the other side of the ball, people are saying we need a road grater to open up holes so we can get the running game off the ground. We haven't added either of those pieces of the puzzle yet. While Portis may be a proven back (yet injury prone) he'll still have a tough time running behind our line in it's current incarnation. We should fix the lines first, then worry about whats behind them. I'd pass on this one.
If Portis came to NY he could no longer be Southeast Jerome. But seriously, I do not think that would be a good trade for the Jets. However it is unfortunate that Vilma is not necessarily a good fit anymore, I still belive his leadersahip is necessary for the Defense.
ROFL Games Started Att Yds Avg Long TD 2002 Denver Broncos 16 12 273 1508 5.5 59 15 2003 Denver Broncos 13 13 290 1591 5.5 65 14 2004 Washington Redskins 15 15 343 1315 3.8 64 5 2005 Washington Redskins 16 16 352 1516 4.3 47 11 2006 Washington Redskins 8 7 127 523 4.1 38 7 TOTAL 68 63 1385 6453 4.7 65 52 yeah looks like you can depend on him. the broncos couldnt depend on him to rush for over 1508 only starting 12 games his rookie year. and he only continued to average 5.5 per cary the next year. Redskins are a horrible franchise and he still continues to be consistent. a broken hand wont change his overall game. listen, I love Vilma, but to try to make Portis look bad in order to glorify Vilma is downright stupid. ive heard good excuses but the poor ones need to stop. how about. vilma's leadership is too valuable to the defense, or vilma doesnt have any lineman in front of him, or even ray lewis struggled in the 3-4, or our OL is the problem moreso than the backs. anything but portis isnt worth it, cuz in all reality he is, its moreso a question of is the team willing to part with vilma.
exactly, I love Vilma. But I do this trade. Portis had a shoulder and hand injury. His legs are still fresh. Especially coming off a 8 game season for him. This guy might run for 1600 yards next year. Turner is totally unproven, older, and was a backup to LT. LT would wear the defenses down by the time this guy stepped on the field. No way we should give up anything more than a 2nd for him.
Thank you for summing up what Ive been trying to say a thousand times so nicely. The most sickening thing on this board is when Jet fans trash someone else totally out of blind allegience to a jet player...like the guy who accused me of having an agenda against Portis because I would do this trade...It couldnt be because portis is 1500 yard rusher and vilma is a decent LB who doesnt fit our system.
More evidence of your agenda against Vilma. You can't blame others for seeing what you post in black and white Jonnyd.
Not an agenda against Portis... And calling Vilma a "decent" LB is the nicest thing you've ever said about the guy.
oops I meant vilma. and I also called vilma " a nice little player". remember that? thats what he is ...a decent, nice little player that doesnt fit our system.
Well, I trust the coaching staff's opinion over yours. I didn't think it possible for someone to bash a player worse than champ does, but you certainly pull it off with Vilma. I can't even believe you're trying to pass off "decent, nice little player" as a compliment.
