the pats have been in great position for many drafts now which has allowed them to draft TE's. us, on the other hand have many other pressing needs (rb,cb,dt,etc)
Comming from someone who previously posted against selecting a receiver in the first round this may sound hypocritical, but if Olsen is sitting there and depending on what the value is at the other positions I wouldn't mind seeing Tannenbaum rolling the dice there.
i really wouldnt mind the drafting of a TE, but like many have said...there are not any first round worthy te's i think we have many needs, but if tannenbaum has "all our ducks in a row" before the draft like he said...then i wouldnt mind an early TE
thats something ive felt when he got here rookie year. he was very very solid in college. good size, nice hands, decent route runner. and since the y have him block alot youd think they call for more plays where releases his block after 2 or 3 seconds and runs a quick out or something.
With the Jets troubles drafting a TE... Their can be a TE with the skills and combinations of Kellen Winslow, Antonio Gates, and Tony Gonzalez combined in one and he'd flop as a Jet...
Bottom line is that the offense needs playmakers.... If that means a day one hybrid WR/TE, so be it. jil
Theres TE's in FA this and in the coming years. I don't understand why they decided we'd pick one in the draft. Besides the fact that Chris Baker is really really good.
I would be exstatic to walk out of the first round with Olsen. Having seen him play since he was in high school here in NJ, the kid is the real deal. Hands size, mean strak, speed. The biggest reason he slipping in the draft, he was forced to block the last 2 years at the U because they were horrendous at protecting the QB, had no QB, and they haven't had a good RB since Gore. Ellis
Thats what im thinking. Ive seen him play, but hes gotten poor QB play these past 2 seasons, so he doesnt get the credit he deserves. Hes a Shockey clone, but not as polished. The only reason why I say wait till the 2nd because either Olsen or Miller are bound to be there
Taking a TE on the first day would be a big mistake. I think we should go after Daniel Graham even if it will cost a little bit. What do you guys think about putting Graham in an H-Back role? He is regarded as one of the best blocking TE in the the game and he would be a perfect fit to use in motion and is a definite receiving threat. This way we could have him and Baker on the field at all times and we don't have to waste a draft pick on a FB. In short yardage we could go double TE with Baker and Graham and put Hodgins at FB(he is our best blocking FB). We could cut Ryan and Askew and free up two roster spots.
As a bonus - Greg Olsen is also a long snapper. It would be nice to be free of utilizing a roster spot for a guy who can only do one thing(Dearth).
So does this mean we can finally close this thread? Everyone agrees a TE is not our most pressing need and based on skill or precedent, we certainly shouldn't draft one in the first round.
Well this thread opened quite a few eyes to Greg Olsen, including mine. TE is not our biggest need, but the value of a good, athletic, TE is rising in todays game. They are huge weapons in an offense. Considering that Olsen has had to learn to block for two years, has all the tools to be a sick recieving weapon, can long snap, AND might fall into the second...it's not out of the realm of the possibility to see the Jets looking at him.
