it seemed like alot of people were high on him about a month ago but now the trade talk for turner has gone down. i just wanted to see if people's opinions. So do you want Michael Turner in Green & White in 07-08 if it costs us one of our second round picks? i would do it for our #57 but it would be a tough decision if it was our #38.
I think draft picks are way overvalued sometimes. I don't know what Turner's worth is. I tend to ask myself this... If he was in the draft this year, where would he be picked? By 38? Good possibility. By 57? Definitely. Now, with that said, what kind of coin would he require? He's going to want Jordan coin.... he's int he same boat as Jordan too.. He can be a stud, or a dud.. and noone has proof either way. From what I've seen, Turner is a btter back than Jordan, but that doesn't mean he won't be a bust, or not durable either.. With that said, I just don't know.
He can't be the focus point of our offseason if he's going to cost a draft pick. If we were to fill most of our other holes before the draft I wouldn't hesitate to send our first second rounder for him. Depending on the quality of the free agents maybe even our first. But if come April we're still looking for a defensive lineman, corner, pass rushing OLB, a right guard and/or tackle and a running back I don't think you can afford to trade a draft pick for a guy who's not a sure thing.
This horse is so dead, it's not even in the glue factory anymore.... it's in the squeeze bottle of Elmer's Glue.
None of the Above. I would only give at most a 3rd for Turner, but you're last option doesn't fit either. Also as the others stated, money plays a big part in this. Turner will command a lot more money than a rookie first or second round pick, so this has to be taken into account as well.
I never wanted him, and I still don't want him. We have much more pressing needs then runningback, especially when that guy isn't proven. JI2004 makes a good point about draft picks being overvalued, but we have to remember that this guy was a fifth round draft pick, and succeeded in a role that Jesse Chatman also succeeded. This being a guy with more impressive physical ability yet finds himself jobless.
Considering how this draft and FA period looks, yes I'd still give a first for him. This draft and FA period help with everything BUT RB for the Jets. Theres 2 guys we won't get that MIGHT be better, and then everyone else is meh. After that the draft around pick 20 kind of stops serious first round prospects, and gets VERY deep with legit second/third round talent, especially at DL/OL/LB. I think it's possible that Turner for a first is OK because we can still get our draft needs in this draft. In FA there are alot of sleeper guys (the Cowboys DE, Saint/Sea guards) we can get for cheap-er that we can get to help soften "need' picks in the draft. The way I see it, this is the perfect offseason for the Jets to give up something for a good, young, very talented RB.
3rd rounder or less? We don't need a RB? For real... Reality - your going to need a minimum of a second rounder, and probably something to sweeten the pot, to even get a sniff of interest from SD. This isn't fantasy land, it's reality. But he was only a 5th rounder... But he's not proven... But how do we know he can stay healthy... But we don't need a running back (I giggle everytime a Jet fan says that, and that Leon could be our starter)... But we shouldn't give up anything... But, But, But... But if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle... common now You have to pay to play... Thats reality. It seems the rest of the league thinks he'll be a starter, and a quality one at that. But a lot of our fans here seem to have short arms and deep pockets and want Pro Bowlers at every position on both sides of the ball as if this were a video game, AND, to top it off they don't want to pay for it. Thats just awesome!!! It's almost as bad as complaining about a free meal, when you have nothing to eat. Ellis " Some people are like slinkies, not good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs "
Consider the runningbacks who the Jets could legitimately land with their first round pick--people like Tony Hunt, Kenny Irons or maybe Michael Bush. Not really an exciting group. Turner is definitely worth our first round pick, considering the way the draft looks like it's going to shake out right now. And pretending that RB is not an issue and that Leon Washington can carry the load by himself is borderline delusional.
Well considering that the three guys you named are being looked at as mid second rounders, we really shouldn't be giving up a first rounder for him. My problem with him isn't even his lack of experience, it's what he has done on the field to this point, and more importantly how he does it. People need to go back and even watch highlight videos, it doesn't really matter. You'll see that he's not the fearless runner between the tackles, that he is on the outside. He hesitates into the hole, and has run in a counter offense his hole career, which gives the tailback plenty of time to make the decision. We run a direct, throw the back right into the hole type of system. Considering that Turner has shown he needs that extra few feet to accelerate or he doesn't go in hard to the hole, he would not fit this team at all. Now I'm not saying he's not tough at all, so don't get all defensive like I'm bashing the guy or something. All I'm saying is, that we see the mistake that the Raiders made with LaMont Jordan, albeit he runs behind a horrible line, but he was the same type of runner Turner is. Regarded as one of the top backups in the NFL, and still struggles in between the tackles, as well as a threat to be cut because he's broken down both of the past two seasons. That's my argument and I really have nothing more to say about it. People view things differently, and I view runningback as a position where stars can be born, if they run behind awesome offensive lines. The age of solo stars at the position is coming to a close, as we rarely see a great starter without a great backup. So I say; why go and get the star, if he's going to be sharing time anyway? We have four backs on the roster, six if you count our fullbacks. I'm not saying any of them are starters, but they platooned together behind an offensive line with two rookies, and a journeyman, and got us into the playoffs. We'll be much better off in both phases of offense; the run and the pass by keeping our draft picks and building up the most important part of the game, the place where the game is always decided... The trenches.
What we are looking at in the draft with our first round pick wont have the kind of impact a stud RB would have on this team. Sure a Defensive linemen would be great for our a team but it wont have the same impact as a good runningback. So if we feel that Michael Turner can be that then you have to be willing to part with the 1st rounder.
Good post.. I think the equation is simple... Turner giving up what it takes (hopefully #38 would do) or Rhodes I mean I know there are other FAs out there... I know, but Rhodes is the class. So which do you want? I can argue both ways.. Rhodes fumbles.. but in his only yr as a full timer, he was 1000+. Sure, it was on the Colts, I know. He also had a knee injury but seems fine now. Or do you want Turner.. a guy familiar with the offense we run, 25 yrs old, low center of gravity, can run between the tackles, etc etc... I agree 100%.. you pay to play.. For all those saying "no way" I better not hear bitching about RB and "Neon Leon" the 3rd down scatback next year.
RB isn't really a big issue? Leon is not an every down back because he cannt run in between the tackles (he is excellant on screens, draws and misdriections), Houston has injury problems and is inconsistent at times, Barlow gains 2 yards a carry, and Blaylock was inactive for basically the whole year. Seems like a big issue to me.
Why give a primo draft pick to a team in our same conference that we are trying to catch? I agree that running back is a position that we can add some quality to but I wouldn't make a trade until the draft starts to unfold and we see what's available for our second and third round picks.
A stud running back behind our line is not going to give you good value. We need to keep building the lines on both sides of the line and find ourselves a great QB. Houston and Washington will be almost as productive as Turner and Washington behind our current OL.
You don't give up a #1 for a back up running back... For a Curtis Martain who was young and established you do it but in no other circumstance
our 1st round pick is basically a 2nd round pick. besides the dolphins drafted ronnie brown with their 2nd overall pick. a second overall pick is worth almost 4 (!) late first round picks so i dont think its a big deal to draft a franchise RB with your late 1st round pick
Keep the faith in Neon Leon, guys. Last year was just a sneak peek at how good he can be The Chargers are going to ask for an arm and a leg for "The Burner". Also, I feel that if the playoff game showed us anything, its that we need a bruising back who can fall forward for the guaranteed 2-4 yards on first down. All i saw was Leon running into the ass of mangold and falling down. Aquire a bruiser (Duckett?, Draft Leonard from Rutgers?) and we'll be OK at the RB spot
