The post is reporting that Dan Quinn from the Dolphins is taking over as our D-Line coach. I like it.... http://www.nypost.com/seven/02072007/sports/jets/quinn_takes_jets_job_jets_mark_cannizzaro.htm QUINN TAKES JETS JOB By MARK CANNIZZARO February 7, 2007 -- The Jets yesterday hired former Dolphins assistant coach Dan Quinn to be their defensive line coach, The Post has learned. He replaces Denny Marcin, who had coached the defensive line for both Herman Edwards and Eric Mangini. Marcin is believed to be headed toward either retirement or reassignment. Quinn spent the last two seasons as the Dolphins' defensive line coach under Nick Saban. When Saban bolted for the University of Alabama job, Dolphins' management asked Quinn to stay on staff as long as he signed a contract extension, but with no financial increase. Quinn said he'd rather finish out the final year of his existing deal and then talk extension and Dolphins' new head coach Cam Cameron fired him. The Jets signed Quinn, who was believed to be en route to New York yesterday, to a two-year deal, an NFL source said.
The Dolphins defensive line certainly plays with attititude. I'm a little bit surprised at the hire only because I figured the Jets would hire somebody who was a 3-4 specialist to come in and resolve the issues there. The last guy we sniped from the Dolphins was Mike Westhoff. If this guy is anywhere near that good then we'll all be happy.
Seems like a good hire. The Dolphins defense has always been a strength. Speaking of transplanted Dolphins along the D-Line, I wouldn't mind bringing in Keith Traylor and Vonnie Holiday from the Dolphins as well. They would add some nice depth to our DL, and have experience in the 3-4. Holiday would immediately take over KVO's starting position, and Traylor would be a nice backup NT, and also would allow us to move Drob to DE in certain situations. The best 3-4 DEs in the draft (Branch and Carriker) should both be gone by #25, and this would let us not have to reach for a 3-4 DE in the draft.
The Jets also got Wise from the Dolphins after they let him go last year. Everyone said Wise was a bust and bad signing (due to the poor play of the Dolphion's Oline). And look what he did with our Oline this year. As long as the Dolphins keep letting quality coaches go, I say keep signing 'em.
This is great news. Another young guy with nothing but an upside. The dolphin’s defense played well and I hope he can maximize what we have or expose those who need to go!
Apparently, he's pretty well thought of and there were multiple teams interested. From the Sun Sentinel in Miami: "MIAMI GARDENS -- Dolphins coach Cam Cameron fired defensive line coach Dan Quinn because he was unwilling to sign a contract extension beyond 2007, a source said. Quinn, who joined the Dolphins in 2005, is regarded as one of the NFL's top young defensive line coaches. A source said the Dolphins are expected to hire Indianapolis defensive quality control coach Diron Reynolds as Quinn's replacement. Reynolds coached defensive tackles under Cameron at Indiana University in 2001 before joining the Colts. Quinn, 36, received feelers earlier this month from other teams, including San Francisco, Tampa Bay and Houston, according to a source, but was blocked by Dolphins management from interviewing elsewhere because the franchise wanted to first hire a replacement for Saban and leave staff decisions to him. The Dolphins are responsible for paying Quinn in 2007 even if he coaches elsewhere."
Everything I read about him is positive. Sounds like another great hire by Mangini. Maybe he'll give Vonnie Holliday a call and get him to sign here.
doesn't vonnie holliday have issues with some of the jets players? if so, would it be smart to bring him in?
Sweet. I love our orginization right now, we're like the Oakland A's of football. Seems within 3-5 years people will be talking about how the Jets are always one step ahead of other franchises.
I had mentioned that early in the season. I saw Traylor in a game and he was flying all over the place. The down side is he's getting old! Would this guy be considered an aging vet?
Other than a little incident with Coles last year, I don't remember any issues. The whole thing was silly, anyway, and Coles is going to be outspoken regardless of whether Holliday is on the team or not. Anyway, I'm not advocating signing Holliday, but I think he would help out our DL if he was signed.
Good memory, I just found this blurb to remind myself. The rivalry got a spark this week Laveranues Coles got into an exchange with Vonnie Holiday through the media. After the teams' first meeting, Holiday told the media that his squad had "played a Jets team that was not a very good football team, a team we were better than and should beat." Holiday then escalated the situation by proclaiming "They're coming here on Christmas Day, and we fully expect to go into that game and get a victory." L.C. shot back, " "I'll be honest, I don't even know who Vonnie Holliday is," Whatever he has to say. I feel if it came from Jason Taylor or Zach Thomas, it would be a little bit more of something to say something about. I don't even know who he is, to be honest." Holiday is a bit long in the tooth at this point but he is surely an upgrade over Kimo Von Oldhoffen. I don't see the Dolphins letting him get away though...
Great news, Baamf. Thanks for posting it. I'm pretty busy these days and most of my Jets news comes from here now... easiest place to find it. I think this is a good hire (if it's truly a done deal). Marcin was old school, or at least, old for what we're doing now. And just the fact that Herm had him around is reason enough for me to look elsewhere. Go Tangini! Great Move!
Here's the piece from ESPN.com. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2757128 Some good things in there. Highly regarded coach, considered a great teacher. I think my favorite part is that he refused to sign a 2-year deal with the Dolphins, but then turned around and signed a 2-year deal with the Jets. He's from the area, he must be a Jets fan. :rofl2:
Yeah, but seeing he was fired from the Dolphins they are still obligated to pay him his entire salary this year, while he also gets a check from the Jets. Not a bad deal....
Well, everything I hear fromt his guy is excellent. Its really starting to make me wonder, are the Jets grooming this guy to be the D-Coordinator? I wouldnt mind that. In 2 years he can take suttons job. What do you all think of that?
