How do you open a hole, by adjusting the responsibilites of the TE. Instead of blocking from a down stance, he makes some hits leading through a hole. It also allows you to play in a three wide set, which tempts the D to go with a big nickel, which if we only had some speed on the outside, would dictate favorable matchups by getting the 8th man out of the box, something this Offense hasn't seen on 1st and second down since before Curtis Martin got here.
I agree with this 100%.... BUILD THE LINE!!! But, again, the Brian Schottenheimer factor is what keeps Turner on my mind. IF Schottenheimer thinks THAT highly of Turner, I'd have to defer to him and what he's seen..... If we didn't have a coach on staff that worked with Turner, Id' turn my head and never look back for the price and salary that will be demanded.
And I can respect that.. I think there are so many sides on this issue, and they all are reasonable. Let's see SD's tender (one of the FOUR options).. it'll say it all: 5th rounder: Won't happen, but then they are asking for him to be taken 2nd rounder: ditto the above, for us, this would be OUR 2nd (late in the round) 1st rounder: here is where the interest lies. They are then saying we want to gauge interest, but be protected against someone stealing him simply because he wants to go. They are trying to protect themselves, but also may trade. I doubt they would take our late #2 (they could have just tendered a 2nd rounder), but our early #2 would interest them.. It could mean MOVING down in 2006 netted us Turner... Think of it that way guys. 1st/3rd rounder: They won't let him go... noone would even negotiate I'd guess.
If you think it is bad here, you should look at other boards! According to one guy TURNER is UNPROVEN so why sped anything on him? Further, IF SCHOTTY does not say anything good about TURNER, he must suck! Err, SCHOTTY is on a gag order and if he did talk glowingly, wy drive up TURNERS price. It get absurd! I do not know if we are going to go after TURNER but why do fans insist on saying nutty things about the guy? Let nature take its course! If he is a JET, lets support him. If he goes elsewhere, so be it but do not denigrate the guy to prove what some perceive is a POINT.
This post is as good an example of presenting an argument as one can possibly read. T-Bird backs up his argument with excellent examples of why a RB can't do it alone. In fact, most RB's are only as good as the holes that are created for them. Upgrade the RT spot and you might find you've got excellent RB's right under your nose!
It's LUDICRIOUS because TURNER is ALOT more PROVEN then the 25th pick in the draft,,,, which keeps getting conveniently ignored.
Once again, I want to know how somehow Turner is unproven but the 25th pick is proven. MAKES NO SENSE. Turner for that pick is an absolute steal.
Fair enough, but compare him to proven pro-bowl running backs that couldn't be traded for a 2nd rounder. If a proven, pro-bowl running back cannot be traded for a 2nd rounder why should a backup be traded for a 1st rounder? T-bird made the best post in this thread. I agree with him completely and think we need to build the line before we think about RB.
I don't think Joe Willie White Shoes is saying the 25th pick "is proven," at least I don't read that anywhere in his posts. But his point about not making a Raiders/Lamont Jordan mistake is a good one, as is his argument that it may be more important to improve the right side of the line. I think that's all he's saying. The last thing we need is to spend the pick on Turner and have him pull a Lamont Jordan here in NY.
They built the line last season with Mangold and Ferguson. You can sign another OL in free agency. Turner is the perfect guy to get,,, a guy just ready to get going. Not a guy coming off career years and now on the decline.
I think the problem is that alot of you aren't overly familiar with Turner. He's very good and only gonna get better. Much better then Jordan.
The only thing that Turner has proven is that he can be a decent enough back to come in and do a good job when LaDainian Tomlinson, and the defense that has been chasing him around the field, are tired. He's shown that he can be good in a backup role but HAS NOT shown anything to suggest he can be an every down back. Though I agree with you that he is more proven, even in a backup role, than another RB or the 25th pick in the draft, whoever it may be, what you keep forgetting is that it's going to cost Top 5-10 money to get him.
The line is far from a finished product. Turner looks like he could be good, but I don't know how you can say he's the perfect guy. First off he IS unproven, second, he's going to cost a boatload with draftpick(s) and contract. This is the same type of arguments we all went through all last offseason. Half the board wants "playmakers" and the other half wants to build from the inside out. It seems like we're going to have the same debate all offseason again. It's already getting stale. This FO knows what they're doing and they will do the right thing.
With Rhodes/COtchery to get signed, and help needed in a bunch of places. Answer this for me. I'll be the first to say the 25th pick in the draft is not proven. I agree. How is Turner proven? He could be a waste, a la Lamont Jordan, or he could be a stud.. that's the definition of unproven.
He is somewhat unproven, but his upside is very high and everytime I see the guy get the ball, he breaks a run. Scouts are very high on him. If the guy was a PROVEN RB at 25 or whatever he is, you wouldn't be getting him for #25.
Exactly spot on. This line was inadequate at best run blocking. To me the run blocking was shit. This is a finesse line and unless, for example, LT, Barry Sanders or Gale Sayers, are our starting backs, our running game is going to be suspect (not in the top 10). I see nobody on our roster with that talent and Turner certainly does not have that talent or he would be the starter. A 1st round for Turner is a joke. He has not proven to be a starter, not in the least. Teams our built from the lines out. Excuse me Super Bowl winning teams are built from the lines out. Giving up a first round pick for an unproven starter is among the funniest things I read here. The past few years there have been numerous other backs with more talent that can be had for less in some instances much less. Why should we over pay............ anyway this is all conjecture obviously. However, judging by last year no way in hell this FO is going to overpay for Turner.
I agree, I'd like Turner and I'd take a shot at #25, but I see the argument from the other side too.. everything you just said is what they said of Lamont Jordan when the Raiders gave him that silly contract and, as I thought then, and still think now, he's proven to be a better backup than starter.
so youre basically saying exactly what I said yesterday...you know, the very statements yo started the argument over...what a character
