From Chris Mortensen on espn.com "around the NFL"... Jets coach Eric Mangini got an excused absence from attending the Senior Bowl. "He needed to get away," said Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum. "He burned it pretty hard going back to the day he was hired." He deserves a break, I guess....
He's a head coach with a staff now. He hired that staff. Let the OC, DC, asst coaches and scouts do their jobs. I don't see this as a bad thing at all. Everyone has to recharge the batteries at some point. Spend some time with family and relax before hitting the grindstone again. I'm sure he'll be at the combine.... if he wasn't then I would begin to worry.
The kid worked his butt off. I don't give a hoot about him being at the senior bowl. That's what we got Tanny and the scouts for. Get you rest little penguin... There's alotta' Patsy killing, Buffalo slaying and Dolphin canning to do next season!!!
Just for the record, I agree. Wasn't trying to post that I think this is a bad thing. Mangini earned a rest. The Senior Bowl is what scouts are for...
Well, lets hope he's made of sterner stuff or learns how to pace himself. We don't need a coach that burns out before his contract is up and if that requires more delegation on Mangini's part, so be it. This is only his first campaign and he's already burning out? What happens down in the road in year 3? 4? I hope he's not gonna pull a Parcells on us. We've had enough of that sh!t.
I wouldn't worry right now. I think this was a tough year for him just getting the program started on the right foot and laying the foundation. Perhaps the next few years may be different as he grows into the position. To look at this positively, nobody can say he didn't give 110%, right?
The Senior Bowl is not that big of a deal. Its actually one of the only times it would be ok to take a little time off.
CMan - I think he needs to pace himself. He seems to keep his emotions in check and at the same time works long hours everyday. I can see how he would burn out. I wouldn't think that going to the Senior Bowl would be that big of a deal. Maybe he is getting the flu or something.
Was that game in Hawaii? If it was, that sounds like a paid for "working vacation" to me.. The toughest thing to learn about being in charge is how to delegate responsibility and authority. One person can't do it all. Lets hope Mangini learns this lesson the easy way instead of the Parcells way.
He is a rookie Head Coach. So he takes a week or two off. I know from my professional career that someone that burns the candle at both ends constantly will break down no ands ifs or buts. I would be more worried if he did not take a week or two off. Way more worried. This only means he will come back recharged ready to get the info from the scouts and prepare with Tannenbaum for the offseason. This news is the same thing we are all doing here during the offseason.................. Looking for a story/stories that are newsworthy. Sorry to say this ain't it. It was just Mortenson loooking to sir up something because of the dearth of real news, he does have to justify his existence this time of year.
I object to the title of this thread. Mangini is hardly "burned out." Christ Almighty, everyone always wants to make things negative. I look at this as a positive. Let the son of a bitch have some vacation time, get laid, get off the diet and disappear to the islands for a while to relax with his wife... maybe drink a few Mai Tai's and do some snorkling. The draft will be here before your know it. Besides, he already has a pretty good idea of what he needs come April.
Yeah, but if the Senior Bowl is a "Job Fair" for prospective players, wouldn't you make sure you have someone there representing? There's plenty talent and raw material there to be mined and I'd like to think there was someone there with a direct line to Tangini. Another example of Delegation of responsibility. One guy tries to do it all?, of course he'll burn out. We're all human after all..
