http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/don_banks/01/25/mock.draft1.part3/index.html 25 DT Tank Tyler North Carolina State Sr. 6-2 310 The Jets made due with veteran Kimo von Oelhoffen on the nose last season, but Tyler would give them a prospect to groom at that key position. is this a joke?? first of all, kimo was obviously not the NT last season. do these morons know anything or just make stuff up as they go along?? secondly, i heard tyler has some disciplinary problems and wouldn't be someone mangini would want on this team. and thirdly, what a waste of a pick that would taking tyler when our needs are DE, OLB, and CB. quentin moses isn't even in the first round in this mock but if we were to pass on him and took tyler, i would flip out. moses is now a 3-4 OLB will a very tall and lean frame and has been doing well in the senior bowl. hes 6'4 250 which is similar to demarcus ware who is 6'4 257 and i am sure he can be the pass rushing LB opposite of bryan thomas. every mock seems to just disrespect the jets, with the blurb saying stuff like, "this might be a reach for the jets, this pick might not be the best for them" well then don't have us taking that person since you know it would be a stupid pick in the first place.
I disagree that our needs are only DE, OLB, and CB. I can easily see the FO moving Robertson over to Kimo's position and get a new bigger run stuffing NT. This team has alot of needs and directions it can go OLB/DE, RT, OG, CB, FB, RB (just look at my sig, lol). So I don't think this pick is completely off the wall. (But they were wrong about Kimo playing NT all season).
I hear ya bro....i've stopped lookin @ mock drafts partly because it seems that they have no clue....as we get closer to draft time they'll be better and a little more accurate with picks....the early mocks usually suck and inaccurate.....
"made due"? The English language is dying... And so is logic. I have no problem with drafting a NT in the first, but not a "prospect" to "groom." Most mock drafts are mockeries.
Anyone else finding the "Mangini wouldn't take this guy" thing a little annoying? It's like, if a guy spits too much to the left now Mangini won't take him because thats a character flaw. These guys are football players, not saints. Worse, most are just over 20 year old guys who have gotten everything they wanted and more in otherwise hard lives because of football. Of course they have a little bit of an ego because of it. Tyler sounds like a sick NT prospect. I think we have more problems at end and OLB (as far as pass rush) than at NT though. Lots of big guys will be in our camps next year.
It's funny what the Senior Bowl can do to projections. Before the Senior Bowl I thought like everyone..Lamar Woodley at pick 25. After seeing a few players on D I realized the Jets have a chance to greatly improve our run D by adding Brandon Mebane at NT. He is 6'2 and very stout, great run stuffer. I also like Anthony Spencer at OLB and I think he can fall to us at 37. He would provide a needed pass rushing presence. Mebane can be had at 58. The question is our pick at #25. I used to think the no-brainer was Woodley . Since he did not shine at the Senior Bowl now I am thinking Okoye. I know he probably won't be there but Mike Mayock at NFL Network projects him to be a late first/early secon round pick. Who knows? Decisions, decisions
Amen. Actually, I like to wait until after the combine is over before I take those mock drafts seriously.
Interesting post. I have to disagree with you. Some coaches (Im trying very hard to think of one..but he was last spotted taking a knee in Kansas City) believe they can take on and control anybody. Sometimes you win..sometimes you lose. With guys like Mangini, they walk the line and rarely stray. They will go outside their beliefs only a bit. When I hear "Mangini guy" it doesnt bother me in the least. It bothered me much more to hear other guys hanging around in Kansas City saying things like "any player can play for me". That kind of mentality makes me believe that this is a guy that has no agenda...has no philosophy. See, I didnt even mention his name. Im sure H.E. is doing fine now.
All you have to do is look at the other team in New York: The Giants. Tom Coughlin was a discplinarian coach who believed he could control anybody. The Giants went out and signed Plaxico Burress to combine with the egoes of Tiki Barber and Michael Strahan. As evidenced in this season, Coughlin simply couldn't control all of those guys. On the other hand, Mangini's philosophy centers around not dealing with these guys with big egos. He would rather find people that don't have these problems than guys who do, even if they have a little more talent. Therefore, there really is no reason to be sick of hearing about "mangini guy" because that is the guy that will eventually end up on the team. The annoying this is when people throw out this term without explanation of why this guy is a "mangini guy".
No, I'm not tired of it at all. Mangini has what seems to be a pretty high standard for players he'll select to play for him. He's repeated it over and over about how he wants smart players that demonstrate a strong desire to play football. That means no turds. No whiners. No "me" players. He wants players that lead by example, and puts a high value on players who were team captains in college. So far, he's drafted pretty well. I think once he has the culture he wants strongly established on this team, he may lower what I'll call his "character standards", knowing that peer pressure can also help potential problem players straighten out. I'd rather deal with this extreme than what goes on in Cincy. This is one reason I would not be surprised to see the Jets draft Hunt. All the talk about how hard he plays without the ball.... and enjoys blocking, etc.... those are the qualities he's looking for.
A)Kimo DID play some NT this season. Why? Because Drob had zeero backup at the position. B) Drafting at this position will improve the team if the right guy is there. Isn't Drob heading into 4th year of a 4 year deal? Playing a position he doesn't like.We need a Hog to give him a break. He was a better player when he had a Ferguson playing next to him. C) The character thing worked out pretty well this year( with the exception of Schlegel, all the character in the world, but he couldn't cover my grandmother in pass coverage).
Totally agree. With that comes consistancy. Being true to who you are. This is the type of player I like. Then you go out and get a non Mangini guy. To the players, you are no longer Mangini...you are a farce. Explaining why people think a player fits the bill would help...I agree. Coles borders on not being a Mangini guy. Except a Mangini guy can be outspoken as long as it is team first...something Coles shows week in and week out. Mangini guys can complain about practices..they can voice their opinion about team. They cant..cant..voice opinion about themselves and how they are used and if they are used. They are smart players. They rarely make mental mistakes. If they do..they are gone. They dont trash the opponent. They compliment the opponent. They rarely if ever give you bullentin board material a week before the game. The coach will never give the recipe for success against a future opponent..either will his players. Unlike the past regime, he will not go into lengthy discussions on "who the Jets are". They just play good ole football. No theatrics...no pounding podiums...no lectures. Thats why I have posted before that this past year was one of the most enjoyable in my 37 years of rooting for the team. It was just football....24/7...and its something Herm defenders will never understand. Gave up on that game a long time ago.
Id rather get an olb or even wr with our first pick Robert Meachem and Sidney Rice could both be available aslong as we get Jarvis Moss or Lamarr Wodley with one of the first 2 picks im good.
It is true, I love the draft as much as anyone, I even attended last year, but I can't take it year round. I will mock draft with the best of them, but not yet. I don't watch much College ball, so I don't learn any of the names until the combine and buying a magazine or two.
Let me just say, Kimo very very often did play DT. We played Thomas at LB, but was stacked on the line. We didnt use a true 3-4 but more like a 4-3 using a linebacker at end.
That is where I agree with you. Where I disagree with most I guess is that I think Mangini has done a nice job establishing this culture of his. He's got a ton of high character guys on this team is, and I think watching fans mark off guy after guy because he did bad thing x 2 years ago is getting annoying. I don't want to be the Bengals, but I don't want to be the all-saints team either. Mangini has established a respect from the media few coaches have in his first year alone, and the players seem to love him to death already. It hasn't even been a full year, but Mangini has shown to me he is an exceptional coach when it comes to establishing his presence within an orginization. My main point was not Mangini overvaluing character guys. It was directed towards fans who think something minor is enough to mark a guy off as "not a Mangini guy."
