Meaning? Worst the meh or better than meh? He was certainly good with turn overs and third downs if I remember correctly, but bottom tier on points scored?
If you're going by DVOA which is the most accurate representation of overall defense he had two bad years followed by one meh year followed by one great year. And then the defense regressed when he left. That indicates progress on top of the results. So meh at best isn't exactly fair. And again... I don't expect this to work because of how little talent we have and how short of a leash the staff has but the plan is not a bad one.
So when the lions offense was bad his defense was bad, then the entire team improved drastically and his defense did better. I would say great was a stretch but even so 2 bad years, one meh year and one good year equals meh, if not worse than meh. Stats back me up and so does 95% of this board and all the analysts but of course you have an argument lol. Getting those debate skills honed in again I see.
I’m now convinced more than ever the draft will be heavily slanted towards beafing up the much needed D, including via free agency, sprinkled with a solid WR and hold the fort QB.
The offense was good 3/4 years Glenn was there though. So that’s not really true. And sometimes the reverse is true. Teams want their defense to play differently (bend don’t break or try to force turnovers or they play soft with big leads, etc.) when the offense is good. Maybe he sucked as a coordinator and was just in a good spot, I dunno. I think it’s ok to give Glenn credit for something every once in a while though lol. He’s not the world’s worst football coach in history.
Stats don't back you up at all actually, nor do analysts. Lions ranked top 5 in offense from 2022-2024. So your theory that the defense was only good when the offense was good is flat out wrong. Statistically wrong. So not sure what stats you're seeing that back you up. And all of a sudden nothing matters defensively if the offense is better? That's why the D got better? That's not rational on any plane. It is very very possible that you can acknowledge Glenn was good without thinking he's going to turn it around and be the savior here. I don't know why there's a certain subset of this fanbase that can't handle that. Getting those irrational takes based on emotion skills honed in again I see.
I've heard plenty that giving the D time to rest is a good thing but never once that over the course of 4 seasons a defense only got better because the offense got better, even though the offense was top 5 for three of those seasons. It's just wild. You can't have a convo here with some people unless you refuse to use logic and only bash the shit out of Glenn, Woody and the franchise as a whole.
He had some players, a good chunk of them drafted while he was there. Hutch obviously was going to be a stud but Branch, Joseph, Arnold... signed Anzalone, Reader, etc. Those guys didn't get better because the offense did.
Interestingly, Hutchinson took a step back this year. Maybe losing his coordinator hurt his game? I hope thats OK to say
I hesitate to bring this up because it's backed by stats and isn't defamatory of Glenn... but Detroit's best season under Glenn came with Hutchinson tearing his ACL in week 5. Top 5 defense missing your best player... that's probably a product of the offense.
You don't normally hire a defensive HC, who fielded two years of shit defense, one year so so, and one year pretty good, then implode in the play-offs. You want him to be excellent on his side of the ball. Glenn was not excellent. But overall I would say he was not total shit DC in Detroit. Maybe average, a little below average overall, say averagish? Certainly not HC material, where you want the best, but if he calls averagish defense next year, it's a huge upgrade over Wilks, who was 30th. In theory that could lead to a few extra wins right there. We could also improve the roster some, so I can definitely see 5-6 games as possibly as the defense should be improved. Still in shit, but without a good draft pick to show for it and maybe even fooling Woody into another year.
You said they were bad 2 years, meh one year and good one year. That's meh in every possible way. 2 bad, 1 meh and 1 good, how is meh not an accurate description no matter what the offense looks like. You are on an island by yourself, I blocked JackBower but kept you around because sometimes you are fun to go back and forth with but now I just think you are argumentative for sport and I just don't have time for it. If bad is 3 and good is 1 and meh is 2 then he ranks just below meh, this is ridiculous you can't do this on your own, validates my thinking.
Yeah I think theres' a pretty good chance he comes here too. With him you hope it was a scheme thing and not that he's getting older
