BTW Gentlemen, I have an announcement. For the first time, I paid for an Early Fall Canyon Tuna Trip! I've been putting it off long enough so yep, I'm going after Tuna in October this year! Will be on the Voyager out of Pt. Pleasant, NJ.

This is shaping up to be my busiest fishing year ever.:D

I already have the gear for it. DAIWA Proteus XHF 7'-6"rod paired with an AVET HXW 5/2 Raptor reel spooled with 60lb braid and 100lb mono leader. Even got a belt should it come to that.

I'll keep you guys posted as the year progresses.

Ha, yes it made me mad as it's TOO NICE (and that i didn't need another spinner) and that the cost of this... a big game conventional makes more sense to me ;)
So you think jig rod (not spj) is the call? I didn't rule out the terez...

And after doing some research, I decided to go with a true Tuna boat rod rather than the Proteus XHF..

    Daiwa Proteus Boat Tuna Special Conventional Rod - PRTB74XXHF - 7'4" - 80 - 150 lb.

Not a bad price either from Melton Tackle. They ship quickly and pack their products quite well. Longer foregrip made of hard rubber and not EVA. Should match up well with the AVET.

LOL... the rod you had was fine. or I could swap you a Penn Bluewater Carnage for that terez... ;)

7'0 65-130 lb braid... barely used

That's foreign fishery for me, but if the fish is beyond that capability, you're not gonna land it anyway.

Pull on 20-25lb of drag... then see how long you want to do that ;)

you should be fine. Rod offer still stands though. It was purchased to be a "Grouper winch" (with a 114H I had w/ 80lb braid..... Gag grouper season for us has been so short, that it never gets used (not to mention my jacked up wrist requires more finesse fishing, or a left hand reel)... sadly just been used as a "descender" rod the past 2 seasons... may eventually be given to my brother for tunas.

Thanks for the offer Stinky. I'll give that some though. '27 I'm planning a trip to Tarpon Springs FL for Snapper/Grouper in the northern gulf. That rod might come in handy.

2 weeks out until my Port Canaveral trip. Can't bring my own gear as the AutoTrain is too expensive. Hopefully the boat gear isn't a reel on a steel rebar.

Ha. is it a headboat? if so, expect an old senator on a meatstick ;)

not sure what airline you're flying, but it may just cost $35 to check a rod

Game changer! I do have a torpedo tube I can put the 2 rods in. I'll pack the reels in my one checked bag along with the gear bag as I'm not bringing that many clothes. I'll get in touch with the Capt. to try and figure out what gear to bring. 2 Rods, 2 Reels, will use the boat's rigs and weights. No cooler as my buddy is meeting us at the boat and he lives in West Palm and he'll take the fish we catch.

    Tanx Stink!!

The boat includes tackle in the price of the fare. I'll find out exactly what they have and go from there.

    Unless it's a private charter, I guarantee it's what I said... and old 113H, 50-60lb mono, on a broomstick rod ;)

Bring your reel on your carry-on. I dont trust the baggage monkeys.

Just took a look at some of their vid on YouTube and you are correct. I will be bringing 2 rods and pack the reels in my carry on.

Flying out in the morning for Orlando. Will be on the Canaveral Princess Friday fishing 25mi reefs for whatever is in season. I was surprised they consider offshore being 25mi as we're used to going 80mi + up here. Looks like they use fish finder rigs and light lead. My gear should be fine and no power assist reels. Going all manual this trip. Wifey will be rockin her MF spinner so we should be okay. Bottom fishing is what the vids showed but the fish were frankly not very big by Jersey standards but hey, another location off my bucket list!! Will be checking out the Kennedy Space Center while down there too. Only got thru half of it our last trip there.. :)

No experience fishing down there, but I'd guess 25 miles puts you in about 150' of water (they're alot closer to the ledge than we are up here)

"The approximate location of the west wall of the Gulf Stream based on the Real Time Ocean Forecast System as of Thursday, January 15th, 2026.

43 nautical miles east of Ponce Inlet. 31 nautical miles east of Port Canaveral. 28 nautical miles east of Sebastian Inlet. 20 nautical miles east of Fort Pierce Inlet. 13 nautical miles east of Saint Lucie Inlet."

Ha nice... we do the same, especially if it's a species that doesnt freeze as well (King Mackerel for example)

Tuna should be good.... especially if its vacuum sealed (but next time Id cut it up into dinner sized portions first ;)
