bro. what's he supposed to say? "its gonna be a rough year, I'm saddled with these POS players" thats just coach-speak and its irrelevant
The Gase teams had less talent than our current team, and Gase was a horrible coach. What does it tell you about Glenn that he put together a Gase-like season with a more talented roster?
It tells you that players win games and coaches struggle with shitty players. I don't agree that Gase had less talent anyway
The Gase rosters were all Maccagnan guys, the worst GM in our team's history and one of the worst GMs in league history. Whatever you think of this year's roster, it's basically impossible to argue it's not better than the 2020 team. The fact that we've been just as bad as the 2020 team means Glenn is almost certainly a horrible coach just like Gase was. We had a horrible OL in 2020 and our leading rusher was the corpse of Frank Gore. Our leading receiver was Jamison Crowder. We had Becton, Van Roten, and Alex Lewis on the OL. Our team leader in sacks was Quinnen with just 7. We had "Blessuan Austin" starting in our secondary. Come on man.
You coulda saved the keystrokes. Gase went 2-14 with Sam Darnold and Joe Flacco. Both those guys are still QBing, in fact Darnold is the starting QB of the team with home field advantage right now! spoiler alert, I won't be saying that about Brady Cook in 4 or 5 years. He will be selling insurance or something...
He also chose Wilks. Not every hire will be a good hire especially with a noob at HC. At least he didn't rehire Nate Hackett.
Perfectly stated…the keep Glenn arguments boil down to Continuity and lack of talent But lack of talent is heavily on Glenn…didn’t he pick the QB? And he took that bad QB and “coached” him to his worst season…I think he had 4 games under 100 yards passing…like how does that happen in today’s NFL? It’s historically bad. Glenn kicked AR out the door, and I understood the reasoning and I can get behind it honestly, but then he specifically chose a terrible QB and somehow made him worse. Defense…can’t blame the Sauce and Q trades as we were terrible before those trades and again, Glenn was in on that decision too. Having no picks all year is another NFL record already and we’ll see if we get one in the last game or not. Historically bad. Our roster agreed is bad. But I don’t think it was 0-7 bad, and I don’t think this coaching staff is maximizing players. That is subjective I agree but we were bad last year under Bob/Jeff and many of the same starters were back and we were worse even before the trades…and that’s comparing to team that got their coach fired last year. The Continuity argument is the other one, and I just don’t buy into it at all. I think that continuity is the result of talent/quality/winning, not the cause of it. A mediocre or terrible coach will not become great just because he gets more years…will he learn and improve a bit? I would hope so. But when it’s THIS bad, I have a hard time seeing it. Not sure on the argument above about all losses being the same…sure they all count the same in the standings, but it’s very different had we been losing close games, had we been competitive, etc. We are getting blown out. In the first half. That is clueless territory. I just haven’t seen any rational defense of Glenn outside of continuity…bad roster is what it is but Glenn had a lot to do with assembling this roster, so can’t use that as an excuse. It’s his roster.
I get the argument, but who should we have gotten? I can't think of a single available qb last off season that would have made the season a success. If anything we would have won a few more games and general public would be even more pissed off. In a weird way Fields signing did it's intention. It was a lottery ticket where he either was going crash and burn or maybe put it together where he could have lasted longer.
And then the round robin of bull begins all over again only this time they pissed away half of the draft haul picking Glenn's players who immediately become "not my guys" when the new regime inevitably comes in. JSMH how the wheel keeps on a turnin[
Seriously? Glenn was the guy who talked him up…I seriously doubt Mougey “forced” Fields on Glenn…that’s not how it was talked about or how it felt at the time. In fact, Glenn was talking shit about how he hadn’t been coached correctly before. Now if your point is that Mougey is complicit in the signing, then yes I would agree…I don’t know if Mougey had the authority to veto the signing if Glenn wanted him or not, as Woody did refer to Mougey as Glenn’s “sidekick”, implying that Glenn had final say. But to imply that Mougey signed Glenn without Glenn’s approval or desire, that’s fishing…
Agree there were no great options at QB this year…so hey, maybe then the best case would be to keep Rodgers? I don’t know what trade talks could have been possible, but I’d have been fine with trading a pick for a guy like Davis Mills a clear backup to Stroud, but a guy who’s played decently well when called upon. Shit, I’d have traded a 3rd for him, or even a 2nd if need be. I have no idea if Houston would even have taken a call, but I’m not an NFL GM so I don’t know what other options may have been possible. In terms of free agency, I agree there were no good options. But yes, I do agree that in a weird way, or to put it in other words, if we were really not caring about winning and wanted to tank, yeah it’s hard to say the Fields signing didn’t work out well…
Yeah, Seriously. You keep claiming that Fields was a Glenn decision, as if Mougey didn't have anything to do with it; only now are you beginning to recognize Mougey is the GM. I never claimed that Glenn was not consulted but I'll ask again - who told you that Aaron Glenn was the main decision maker in signing Fields? I don't give a crap who "talked up" anyone - that's coachspeak and anyone beyond middle school should be able to recognize it as such. Your "serious doubt", what was "talked about", how "it felt" and your "don't know" tells me you were simply listening to the voices in your own head and giving them far more credibility than they deserve.
I think they were both on board…no argument there But your talk track sounds like you are inferring that Mougey forced Fields on Glenn, which by all tangible evidence is not true. I think they both wanted him… Not sure what your point is…but my point is that you can’t excuse Glenn for having a bad offense because his QB sucked when he picked the QB and got rid of Rodgers to do it…and while Rodgers now is not the Rodgers of old, he is still much better than Fields ever was. I don’t for a minute believe that Mougey forced Glenn to go with Fields. If those are the “voices in your head” have at it…
A question concerning Malik Willis and/or Snoop Huntley............................................. How MUCH do you think the NY Jets would need to pay either of these guys to essentially end their careers in NY? Table that for a moment. How many teams are looking for a starter? Consensus is Mendoza and possibly Moore are the ONLY QB's worth taking on day 1. At the top of the draft, I feel, BOTH are reaches but you can make an argument they both are, at the very least, round 1 QB's. However, neither, in my opinion, should be starting day 1. Both need to sit, ideally, for a whole year and learn. So, since I'm writing this I'm going to ASSUME competent NFL men are running the show and both draft picks ride the pine. Even if both start day 1, that leaves a lot of openings for a RAZOR THIN group of QB's who might be considered starters. The list: Jets - Regardless of HC, I've got nothing to add here. You have the people who think Mendoza walks on water and those that do not. It's irrelevant though, because, unless they intend to wipe out the 2026/2027 draft by trading the farm to move 2 slots they are in the Moore/someone else sweepstakes. The only thing we all seem to agree on is there better be THREE new QB's in that QB room in 2026. Raiders - Draft one of the top 2 guys. Problem here, much like the Jets, it's the Raiders and sometimes they do real stupid shit so who knows. Let's assume they take Mendoza, is G. Smith ok with becoming a seat warmer? Do they fully move on? That may "flesh out" as the offseason goes. Browns - Depends...for those that think Sanders is a long time starter in the making (I do not) they may not be in the market but I think they should be. Gabriel is 3rd string, possibly a backup at BEST and Watson will never play another down of football, ever, anywhere. Colts - is Jones the answer? Can Jones stay healthy? Honestly, I think Richardson takes his guaranteed money and gets out of the NFL. He's not an NFL QB. Honestly, I barely have him as a #3 but that's just my opinion. Dolphins - Regardless of what Miami does at the HC position, they are either going to fully move on from Tua or have an open competition with the intent of having a starting caliber QB at 2 in the guaranteed event that Tua will miss time. Steelers - are they really going to run back Rodgers? IS Rodgers really going to continue to play? Falcons - Penix re-injured the same oft repaired knee & Cousins...well, does he want to stay there or explore a guaranteed starting slot elsewhere? He's making a lot of money to be a #2... Saints - We'll see what decision they make Cardinals - Murray has played his last snap here. From what I read about him, SHOULD be his last snap as a starting QB but some foolish team is going to bring him in. Where does he land? Is he on the same level as Malik or Snoop or just above, all things considered? Ravens - Let's see how things shake out with Jackson and the playoffs. It "feels" like he is wearing out his welcome there but you never know. IF he plays this 17th game, and it appears he will, how does he look? I personally feel they beat Pittsburg without Metcalf, how far does he take them in the playoffs? MVP's are great but Super Bowls are better and it feels like they haven't been "close" with him under center. If they go deep, he stays, he not...let the rumor mill spin. Back to the original question. How much? As you see the list there a lot more attractive locations so, in normal NY Jets fashion, they are going to have to ridiculously over pay (and, of course, end up resetting the pay scale for better than average backup QB's to starter). I guess a side question, who, outside Willis and Huntley, would we even consider brining in that would be capable of starting 17 games in 2026? My guess is we're looking at a minimum of $35 million per regardless of whether it's Willis or Huntley. Just spit ballin' on that one as I have no idea. I also would say it goes down from there, in cost, depending upon who they decided. However, the pickings are slim. I can't remember a time where it's been THIS HARD to find a starting caliber QB in the FA Veteran ranks.
