Which is why nobody wants to come here... I don't think it's because they don't like New York, or the color green.
MOST of those players you cited were on the downside of their careers and that's a fact. Not one of those players was ascending. As far as Saleh and Bowles are concerned, both were passed over by a number of teams. As I remember, neither one were "on the fence" about joining the Jets because they were weighing offers from other teams. They took the job because it was that or go back to their former spot. Let's make sure we are putting out the correct context... You "might" be correct about Saleh however he would literally have to change his personality by a full 100% for him to be a successful Head Coach. Pete Carroll was/is the Rah Rah kind but he learned how to put his foot in some asses, I guess time will tell about Saleh. I think Bowles is done after Tampa. You can only win so many division titles by going 9-8 before someone finally catches you and it looks like Carolina was that team. Atlanta, with a better QB, will be there too soon and then what. We shall see.
Again, dumb owner is BETTER for the candidates. They get more time and the opportunity than they would otherwise. It is not good for the fans and the team, but it is GREAT for these candidates, because they can easily fool dumb Woody. As @REVISion correctly pointed out, not wanting to come here is not the main issue. It is not an issue at all actually, aside from not having the QB, which we do have to rectify at some point. But the owner hiring bad people is the main issue.
Cool. So we should be stoked about the possibility of a great HC seeking out the Jets job specifically so they can manipulate Woody, the only downside being that everyone in the front office is a Woody quality hire....or somebody else who took the job so they could easily fool Woody all the time. Now I get it.
How many “great” head coaches have their pick of the litter? Yeah the Jets weren’t landing Jim Harbaugh and Ben Johnson picked one specific location and didn’t want to go anywhere else. Mike Macdonald might be the best hire of the last 5-6 hiring cycles. Do you think he wouldn’t have went with the Jets (because they’re the Jets) if they pursued him? Did Kevin O’Connell have his pick of the litter when he became a head coach? Liam Coen? I don’t remember any of the three of these guys being heralded as the next great head coach. We’re just not even considering interviewing these guys which is why we’re not landing them. Yeah, we aren’t getting Harbaugh although it’s not like those guys come around all that often and there are probably 20 teams on their blacklist. Harbaugh rebuffed NFL offers for almost 5 years when he was struggling to get over the hump at Michigan. I think the Ben Johnson thing this offseason has made this fan base crazy about not being a desirable destination so we’ll never get a good head coach. He was probably clearly waiting for the Bears job to open up for multiple years.
I think even Ben Johnson and Harbaugh would consider coming here if we had Herbert or Caleb. In general having a good young QB makes things more attractive for the coaches because they are more likely to succeed. But most situations do not have great QBs, and we are not any worse these any of these.
But now we're in the wrong round robin, by this explanation. Those guys landed because of Herbert and Caleb yet we are in a situation where the likelihood of the Jets landing a QB of that caliber to entice coaches like them is a long shot at best. Then the cycle continues. I guess we'll find out what direction we're heading in after NY and Buff whomp us by a combined 60 or 70 points.
Obviously if another team with an opening has a promising young QB, they will get the first dibs. It will depend on how many of these opening are there, what coach they want, etc... But there should be multiple good coaches available. Woody just needs be able to pick the right guy instead of making a dumb choices again and again and again. Which is a very tough, maybe even impossible ask, I know.
The only thing that makes sense is that Woody wanted Rodgers gone and that was the primary factor in determining who the next Jets head coach would be. All of the quality coaches likely wanted to keep Rodgers because who wouldn't? Look at him now, closing in on a division title and playoff berth because he has competent head coach around him. The most telling thing is the Jets didnt even interview McCarthy. Its beyond obvious Woody wanted to get his way, and hire a coach that would dump Rodgers. Woodys high moment for 2025 was when Glenn wasted Rodgers time with the meeting. That was Glenns way of impressing Woody im sure. Now Woody gets to watch Rodgers in the playoffs. Ultimate karma by a stupid owner.
I don't think anybody avoids the Jets "because they're the Jets". I think anybody that has options avoids the Jets because Woody Johnson owns the Jets and he will surround them with fools in every role that is needed to make a franchise function. The fact that he's not considering these candidates is exactly the point. I have zero expectation that this franchise is going to hit on HC or develop a QB before Woody is gone. Everything about him undermines those goals.
Right. But what coach do you think we’ve missed out on for those reasons other than the obvious Harbaugh & Ben Johnson?
Why do you think all coaches but Glenn would want to keep Rodgers? He had one offer this offseason, and this was after Pitts tried to get Fields instead of him but couldn't. It just does not make sense. Again which coaches/GMs Woody interviewed said no to Woody when it comes to letting Rodgers go? Here is one article that suggests pretty much everyone recommended to move on from Rodgers. https://bleacherreport.com/articles...rumors-most-jets-hc-candidates-wanted-move-qb And I recall several interviews by Jake Asman or someone else of candidates who ultimately were not picked and they said also they would move on from Rodgers. It made sense, new regime, new start with someone younger. Again, I know YOU would keep Rodgers, but that wasn't what most people thought. Rodgers also got only one offer after Pitts went after Fields before that. The story you are trying to push that all the coaches said they want Rodgers, Woody didn't like it, and Glenn was the only one who said yes to Woody to let him go is a complete fabrication, it is made up. There is nothing there to support it, it's a figment of imagination.
Is that not enough? I am certain there are more examples but much like you I don't feel like spending Christmas eve scouring the interweb for articles. If you think we never missed out on players or coaches because of this team and the owner you must be delusional, this isn't and hasn't been anyone's first choice. Even if we sign players we over pay them, if it's us or virtually any respectable franchise they are choosing from they would have to be insane or have some sick masochistic fetish with losing. This isn't speculation or hyperbole, it's common sense. If you were offered a job at a fortune 500 company and offered the same job as a pickle slicer where your dick is the pickle for the exact same money and benefits would you be a pickle slicer JV?
He's been bad, but I understand why Woody wants to give him a 2nd season. If he stinks next season, then can him. I'm trying to be optimistic. If he gets the defensive coordinator right and hires a good QB coach, Engstrand improves next season and Mougey gets the offseason right, then the team could turn around. I know it's a lot of "ifs".
If EVERYTHING Glenn did will be completely different, yes things would get better, we agree there But usually when pretty much everything is wrong, it does not just get better. A few small things here and there, sure. But when you need so many key things, that really means you don't have the right guy in charge.
Yeah but like I said. Keep in mind, Harbaugh was lobbied for 5 years with an average of what? 4-6 openings every year? He didn’t just pass on the Jets, he passed on several openings every year. There aren’t many coordinators or coaches that get that luxury to pass on jobs for multiple years. I’m not putting my dick in a pickle slicer either. That analogy is asinine though. Jets coaches are making 7 figures a year working 1 of 32 jobs of it’s ilk in the world.
We have 5 first round picks, 8 total picks in the first 2 rounds over the next two years. We won’t possibly be any more attractive to a prospective GOOD coach as we will be this year. Allowing Glenn to be the coach of a rookie QB is a goddamn travesty. Now is the time to clean up our mistake and find a qualified and competent coach that understands offense!
The anology I referenced was the punchline of a joke I learned in High school. That said I would equate being a Jets fan to sticking my dick in a pickle slicer. Love ya JV, as I do all my gang green family. I wish you the best tomorrow morning and wish nothing but the best to you and yours. Merry Christmas to all and to all good night.
Most of your list came to the Jets via trade not signing here, and while not 20 years ago most are in the 15-19 years ago range. Thomas Jones was via trade 19 years ago Braylon Edwards came via trade and then off waivers Santonio Holmes came via trade ( yes he resigned when clearly on the way down) Kris Jenkins came via trade via trade Cromartie came via trade and then resigned on the decline and waived after 1 year. Ladanian did sign when he was a shell of his HoF self Leveon Bells career was over when he decided to sit out a year, not highly sought after/way over paid Brandon Marshall came via trade I will give you Mosely but we did overpay. Decker was a good signing Woody and Faneca were as a said Oline at the end of their careers who were in the last 3 years of careers. Not really supporting the idea that highly sought after players are coming here. ‘
